Where to get a VISA Electron card?

  • My very recently issued Co-Op Cashminder card also has a Link symbol on it.

However the key issue with an Electron card is that the card numbers on it are not raised or embossed but only printed so that it cannot be used in an old fashioned hand operated card machine (yes they do still exist and work) with a voucher. This is because Electron cards can only be used for live online verified electronic transactions using a card reader or over the internet.

Up to £5/person/sector on Ryanair now for everything but Electron. Too late for this trip, but I've emailed Smile asking if they can give me an Electron card for future use, I fly Ryanair twice a year, probably worthwhile.

My Electron card from the Co-op bank just arrived this morning. I opened an account specially to get one for buying Ryanair tickets. It's in addition to my normal current account. It was pretty straightforward but you do have to specify very clearly that you want an Electron card, because if you qualify for a debit card they will automatically give you that.

After just finding out earlier today that Ryanair have increased booking charges using a debit card to the same as for using a credit card. £4 for each person included, each way' (£16 return for two) now.
(Apparently has been since Oct?).

If of any help, and after also having seen some of the threads on here. Having been with the co op bank for some years, I made a call to them asking for an electron debit card. As I already have debit card I was asked why I wanted it? Having said for airline booking purposes. (Apparently it is not a whole lot of use for anyhing else that a normal d.d won't do).

I was told. 'No problem, will send one off to you'. I did ask if there was an expectation to discontinue the card shortly or near future? And was told that 'not so far as aware'.
    .

OH, was thinking to cancel the account with Co-op Bank which was only applied for the £100 at the first place. I changed my mind and now asked them to send me a electron debit card. The chap on the phone was not very keen on that...but still let me do that. Not sure when to book a cheap flight, but come in handy!

Just to confirm, I've got a Smile (co-op brand) account with a visa debit card. I've asked them to replace it with an Electron, to quote,

"We don't issue electron cards in addition to a debit card. We can replace the debit if you require an electron card for any particular reason."

I'll get around Ryanair by hook or by crook!

Yes, that I was told by Co-op bank. But since the debit card (I couldn't even remember the pin) was no use to me after all, I asked them to replace it then.
  • I haven't read the whole forum so forgive me if this has been mentioned, however you can get a 'virtual' card at www.entropay.com, which is accepted on the RyanAir website as an Electron. I was booking two flights last night for £10 each return including taxes, onto which RyanAir were going to carge £5 each person each way, thus doubling the cost. I know the flights are cheap, and I've always just paid it, but I was slightly drunk and this time it really annoyed me out of principle.

I signed up for Entropay and after their thorough security checks was successfully registered. It does work, just completed the transaction. The transfer fee on Entropay means that the cost of the £25 I transferred was a little over £1.20, so well worth the effort if you book Ryanair frequently.

Thanks Forza, just done the same, tranferred £20 at a cost of 99p and booked 4 flights, Bournemouth-Barcelona for £8, well £8:99 including Entropays fee, saved me £39 in Ryanair fees.

The Entropay account started working straight away and was really easy to set up. They do charge 4.95%, roughly 50p per tenner, when you add money to your "virtual card" and £3 if you want to transfer money back to your normal debit card but those are the only charges they make.

    Thanks again:beer:

Also just phoned the Abbey and they are going to send me an Electron card in addition to my "normal" Visa debit card in conjuction with my abbey current account. The guy on the phone was more than happy to do this.
