The most important thing you can give your daughter is love. She already seems to have this in abundance so you are not failing her in any way. GIVE YOURSELF A PAT ON THE BACK FOR COMING THIS FAR. You have done well, you are a good mum. Try to sort your debts out but please don't beat yourself up about them.

Hello! I just want to say you sound like a lovely mummy so don't beat yourself up over that.

Have you tried filling in an HC1 form (available from opticians and doctors' surgeries)? You could be entitled to free eye tests and a free pair of specs and even help towards cost of contact lenses (although the voucher is worth more if used for specs). If you are entitled you will get an HC2 form back through when you've sent off the HC1. You use the HC2 to get the free stuff - you could get free doctor's prescriptions too or at least some help towards the costs of these things.

It has been a few years since I filled one out but I assume they are still about! Just pop into Specsavers or suchlike and ask for HC1 - it's worth a shot!

    Best wishes

hi eli, just read through the thread......it is the worst time, the period between an ex leaving and actually being on single parent benefits......the benefit agency doesnt seem to understand that not everyone is willing to wait 2 months while they sort out your money!........i was like you and renting a property (650 a month!) pokey 2 bed in a rough area. i was bringing home about £800 a month it was a nightmare untill all my benefits were sorted out, lucky i had my family to help out or i dont know what i would have done (he also left me in serious debt)......i would wait and see what benefits you are getting untill you make any decisions about whether you can afford to stay there or not. The benefits you worked out do sound about right (i know i am better off financially by myself) the only thing i would point out to you is that with only one child you are not 'entitled' to a 3 bed place. so they would deduct the cost of 1 bedroom and then work out your benefit based on this price not the actuall price you pay........unfortunatly in my experience it is a rule where no common sense is used.

    Good luck and stay strong
