Oooh, porlock - I like the sound of that bread and apple chutney to go with the venison terrine. Do you have a recipe you could let me have? Mister CJ is partial to a spot of game, and that chutney sounds a delicious accompaniment. Thanks
Oops - I meant two seperate things! I am going to make some bread, and also some apple chutney, neither of which I have found a recipe for yet. I will just have a look closer to the time!0 -
i'm not sure yet of fine detail but xmas eve we will as always have lots of family over and i'll either be doing ham, egg and chips or a buffet meal. Xmas day i'm host again ( which i love) unsure of numbers yet min of 7 max of 10 . will be serving gammon, chicken and beef. plus lots of veg, roasties etc. stuffing is usually just the plain sage and onion as it all of our fav's. one thing i really want to do is try and make my own cranberry sauce tho , and some chutneys for the evening to go with our cold meats and cheese. Boxing day i think we only have 7 with us, so i will prob do some sort of buffet.
wish i could have more for meals but i only have a 10 seater dining table, but i love entertaining and having peeps round for dinner. hubby and i love being host's.0 -
gosh I am such an amateur compared to you lot!!
Am hosting xmas dinner for the first time this year - dinner for nine (parents, in-laws, SIL, Auntie, Gran & us) and just starting to work out menus. I have the red xmas magazine from Woman & Home which is pretty good and am going to ask Mum lots of Qs and get everyone to bring something along to help.
Think we'll be having scrambled egg & muffins in the morning (just OH & I) and then dinner 1.30-2ish of turkey and all the trimmings- potatoes, yorkshire puds, stuffing, pigs in blankets, veggies. At our place Xmas usually goes on late with games and cards and a tea of bread, cold meats, salad, cheese etc at about 9pm!fran-o0 -
I'm picking up my parents after my appointment at Heartlands on 23rd then traveling back down to Gloucester.
It will have to be something like lasagne and salad on 23rd, oven cooked fish & chips on 24th. Christmas day will be 6 sitting down to boned rolled turkey breast (bought yellow stickered & in the freezer), pork shoulder (yellow stickered & in the freezer) sausage meat wrapped in bacon, new taters, brocoli, sprouts & green beans & roasties Apple sauce is in freezer, and will make a dose of cranberry sauce with port if I can find some cranberries reduced price in mr t's. Mum has an individual christmas pud (cause she loves them), Son & daughter will have chocolate cake, but I'm going to pears in red wine for the rest of us.
Supper will be carrot, lentil &corriander soup, cheese board cold cuts and salad. Similar on boxing day with jacket spuds or bubble & squeekIt matters not if you try and fail, and fail and try again; But it matters much if you try and fail, and fail to try again.

I've just stumbled across this thread from the newsletter, and there are some lovely ideas on here - seems a lovely (and fattening) Christmas is going to be had by all!
One thing I am NEVER allowed to miss out in our house is "Sprout Gratin." I try very hard not to cook it during the year (maybe getting away with once or twice!) so that it really is special on the big day - even my nephews eat it and they HATE sprouts normally!
If anyone wants the recipe I would be happy to share it with you (unlike my SIL who keeps all recipes close to her chest - what's the point in that?!)
Also, another "not to be missed" is Prune & Walnut Stuffing - yummy yum yum!
Merry Christmas to you all! :rudolf:0 -
I borrowed Nigella's recipe book from a friend and am cooking most things from it.
No starter.
Dinner is Super-Juicy turkey, super-juicy chicken (boyfriend doesn't like turkey), Ham in cherry coke, Pork.
Sausage meat stuffing.
Pigs in blankets.
Roast potatoes bashed about with semolina then cooked in goose fat.
Parsnips roasted in maple syrup.
A selection of veg.
Yorkshire puds.
Dessert is choc cake and baked alaska.
Cooking for 8 on christmas day, then more family come over on boxing day which will be a buffet style day using some cold meat left over from christmas day. The day after boxing day, more family come over so will be cooking a sunday lunch type dinner with the rest of the meat.0 -
I tend not to have breakfast at Christmas as I head straight down to the stables to see my horse, but do make mucking out slightly less unpleasant with a mug of champagne
Starter will be smoked salmon and avocado terrine (easy peasy to make, placesmoked salmon on the base and sides of a ramekin dish, then add a layer of goats cheese/avocado/chilli/chive mix, add another layer of salmon and repeat, then bung in the fridge overnight).
Main course:
Rolled turkey breast which we get from our local butchers - best turkey we've had yet and means we have no waste.
Chipolatas and sausages from the same butchers - best sausages in Suffolk
Roast potatoes and roast butternut squash
Steamed carrots, possibly broccoli
Red cabbage with bacon
Sprouts, bluergh!
Stuffing, which will probably be sausage, sage and onion
Cranberry sauce, which is one of my favourite parts of Christmas
The weird people will also have gravy
Christmas pudding to follow with white sauce, although because I don't eat nuts I get a very sad microwaveable one from Tescos, as my stepfather's mother makes a HM one for everyone else.
Boxing day is always delicious gammon, with cold turkey and bubble and squeak.
The Christmas meal is quite easy to make (particularly as I've already said, I scarper out of the house in the morning and return about an hour before it's ready :rotfl:) - I do my bit by getting the starter, stuffing and veg ready the night before and the turkey breast needs far less faff than a whole turkey so other than heating everything there's not much to do.Despite the name, I'm actually a laydee!0 -
Where's the recipe for Sprout Gratin please?0
