OH & I have been talking about getting married today, as I've always said I'd prefer to be married before baby (bit late for that now!!), but he has agreed we should get married soon after, so thinking maybe July, quietly just us & baby, then go off on holiday (combined with his 30th birthday which we were planning to go away for too) Not sure how realistic it is, but a nice idea, gonna start looking into it! Do you think people would think we were mental if we got married, literally, just the 2 of us? & if we went somewhere like Gretna Green, would they provide us with witnesses? I know it sounds nuts but OHs family is so complicated that the only way we can really do it without too much difficulty is on our own.
Hi Gymfiend - DH and I got married at Gretna Green in March just us and DD. They provided the witnesses for us, and one of the witnesses took photos for us. We didn't want much fuss or anything, so it was ideal. We only decided about 3 weeks in advance. You just need to decide which place you want to get married in (we got married in the Old Smithy), and whether you want a minister or a registrar to marry you. We went for the minister as it was cheaper. When we booked the venue, they gave us a list of ministers, and I rang the very nice (and fairly eccentric) minister from the Church of Scotland and agreed the date and time, which I confirmed in a letter. I filled out a simple form off the internet and that was about it! We had to collect our certificate of marriage from the registry office in Gretna just before, and everything was then done.Working hard in the hopes of being 'lucky'

gym - we got married at Gretna, too!
had more of a "proper" ceremony, but I know they also do really tiny ones with literally just the bride/groom. They've got all sorts of great packages to suit all budgets so you can choose if you want a few bells & whistles or literally just the ceremony. It was sooo easy and since they do weddings all the time up there, everyone knows exactly what to do. I don't think you're crazy - it's a lot of fun!!

Redstar, sounds just like the kind of wedding we're after, lovely to hear of someone who's actually done it. You're both totally selling the idea to me! Just nosing around on the internet now, I'm nothing short of amazed that OH has actually agreed to getting married (despite choosing to propose, don't think he really thought we'd ever actually do it!!) so think I'd better get things moving quickly before he changes his mind again
Lots of labour vibes for you GISI & CharliedavisBaby Boy arrived March 25th 2010 - 17 days late & 8lb 10oz :j0 -
Gym, we got married at Gretna in the Old Smithy too
We used http://www.gretnaweddings.co.uk/gretna_green_weddings.html
They sorted almost everything regarding the ceremony for us. We just arranged the reception which we had at the Solway Lodge Hotel and the staff there were fantastic. All the photos are on facebook so feel free to add me if you want a nosy (that goes for all of you lol).
The only thing that is strange is the fact that someone somewhere has pics of my wedding in their holiday snaps :rolleyes:Cross Stitch Cafe member 710 -

How exciting! I say do it!! If that's what you both want then what anyone else thinks doesn't really matter. And if you can't get witnesses up there I'll come and do it for you
I just got home from the rugby. Really enjoyed it, and baby was going mad too! Don't know if it was all the excitment and me jumping up and down or the noise, or both! Shame England gave up in the last 20 minues though.0 -

Hi Gymfiend. Just off to catch up but just to say me & DH got married near Gretna Green in 2008, I am sure they do provide the witnesses in the GG venues, there are lots of websites about it if you google Gretna Green. We did intend to get married in Gretna but ended up falling for a castle nearby and booked that in the end. We ended up with close family and friends going up to Scotland too but it was a nice quiet wedding with about 30 including us and lovely to have only people there that we really cared about.
