right, I'm going to put Jack on the pillow and try and get him off to sleep.
need to make bottles and then make the most of BIL being out for the night ;)

Think Jack likes Jedward - he always smiles in his sleep when they are on!

Lady I personally think it's impossible to calm a babe without picking them up.
I used to go in, pick Chris up and sway for long enough for him to stop screaming (but not until he's totally quiet) then put him back down. I wouldn't talk to him but would shhh or hum and I didn't look him in the eye either, just went in like a robot (and felt a bit like one when doing it at 3am lol)

Em - Izzy loves natural yoghurt, or I mixe it with fruit puree. I look out for the going over fruit they put on offer at the end of the day -if I'm going to puree and freeze it then it doesn't matter if it needs using today ;)

I have a question now - really aimed at those of you with a bit older kids. I'm still feeding Izzy to sleep, but it is getting more and more of a challenge - it doesn't always work, and sometimes she wakes up as (or just after) I've put her down, and doesn't want more milk. So I'm sometimes having to get her to sleep in my arms, but without milk. All this is meaning that bedtime is taking longer and longer, so I'm having to go to bed later and later to fit in all the things I need to get done in the evenings.

I could really do with putting her down awake, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I know it will be a hard week or so to start with until she gets the hang of it, which I'm prepared for, but I'm not sure how to do it! Whenever she wakes up as I put her down she sits herself up, stands herself up, and screams until I pick her up and put her back on the boob again, so whenver I read all of the wording about controlled crying, where it says to go back in and calm baby down without picking up/feeding I'm not sure how it would work! Has anyone else taught an older baby to go to bed awake? What did you do? Help!

Elijah has loved natural or greek-style yogurt since he was 6 months, too :) sometimes with fruit purees but also plain.

I'm hardly one to talk confidently about good sleep techniques :p but we found a natural progression into BF until he was droopy-lidded but not fully asleep, then carrying him into cot with a little mini-lullaby and walking away. It mostly works. The baby whisperer pick-up put-down method always sounded interesting, which is basically, you put them down, as soon as they cry you pick them up and comfort them but only for as long as it takes to stop crying, then put them down right away. Rinse repeat many many times (I think one example she gave with a stubborn baby involved her doing it 80+ times over 2-3 hours one night...), and supposedly if you're firm then within a few days it will sort things out. One alternative to controlled crying maybe.

What we do in general is, get him calm and peaceful in our arms by rocking or just cuddling for quite a while (a few minutes at least) then lower him down into the cot and keep contact with him - we found rhythmically patting his bottom worked quite well, again for at least a few minutes. Then disengaging but staying present for another couple of minutes before sneaking out, or starting again if he kicks off ;p not the best routine in the world but it's better than the screaming and the fighting :)

Yesterday, Molly threw up in my mouth and cleavage.

Tonight she went for my bra, down my back and into my pocket.

I shudder to think what tomorrow will bring.

Right now, the shower beckons. Goodnight :)

Lady - have you used the skibz bib? do you think it would be a good dribble catcher?
I want some stylish bibs for my drool monster :D

  • Hi Sami - yep, it'd be good for dribble I think. We're not particularly dribbly here (not at the moment anyway - I'm sure it will start up again when the teeth kick back in properly ;) ), so not road tested it properly, but yes, they are ace. I don't think I would have ever paid for one new though!

Thanks for replies on rice/pasta...good idea about breaking it while brittle, might try putting it sandwich bag and bashing it?? If that doesn't work I will just chop it once cooked, if he can't eat it full sized.

Ladybird, The best ways I have found of soothing baby with out picking up is the patting bum/back method and the rocking by holding shoulder method (baby needs to be on side for this ideally) when I say pat I tend to do it fairly firm then as baby calms do it lighter and slower until you can stop and they don't realise:)
