Hugs beanie -- finishing an assignment is bad enough without any thing else on top of it. I must have missed what happened to you - pulled ligaments? Ouch! But I think they can get better on their own - pulled is not so bad as torn - but I have no idea how long it takes.

Thank you for the wise words about the stick too.
  • Sary - Sorry you have been comfort eating, How was day1 today? Aldo I think they deserve a big kick up the bottom

Brighton belle - Did you enjoy your cream tea? That sounds like my idea of heaven :D

Eric - anything to stop you going to a dark place enoy your LOTR if that is what it takes

Beanie - sorry you had a bad weekend too, hope your OU assignement is going better now. I pulled the lateral ligaments in my right ankle/foot and I am afraid it took about 6 months to heal, I have also heard they take longer to heal than a break but rest is the best thing for them. I know that isn't what you want to hear but 6 months will go past really quick and you will be back on your feet in no time :)

Marion - congrats on your loss :T

Heatherberry - Well done on resisting those snacks and starbucks

    Hope I haven't missed anyone out ???

I have decided after reading lots of your posts that maybe I have been eating a few too many calories so I have been trying to up my amount the past 4 days. Only trouble is I feel strange now eating so much, I just hope it boosts my metabolism

    Welcome :j

Does not seam excessive at all, I have not read a huge amount on PCOS, my sister has it, but they do suggest here a low carb diet and that its extremely hard to shift weight.

    http://www.womens-health.co.uk/pcos6.asp

Do you work shift work or just cant sleep?

    Stabbing in the dark:

Try to eat 60-90 mins after waking up (seams to be 4 hours atm)

Try to eat every 4 hours or so with the last meal 2-3 hours before bed, split your cals between each meal equally if you can

Where you can try to cut out processed food and replace with fruit and veg (there does not seam to be much listed) so instead of 2 processed biscuits have a nana or an apple. If you can stop using the sweetner they can cuase addictive behaviour in some people (after 2 weeks you will wonder why you needed it), maybe try tinned tuna in spring water instead of heavily processed sliced meat.

Actually log everything you eat so you know how many cals you are eating, its all too easy to add a drink or a snack and blow the total with out realising it.

    Things to avoid

Booze - wasted calories, gives nothing nutritional, can in some cases aggravate joint pain.

Processed food - If you can make it your self, this removes all the nasty additives like MSGs from your diet and the 10-15 mins you spend making it is extra calories burned. It should be cheaper to make your own food as well.

Try to avoid foods that cause addictive behaviour (ie a release of hormones from the pleasure centre of the brain), these are:
    Cheese
    Chocolate
Fatty Foods (ideally you want less than 10% fat in everything and less than 3% saturated fat, so 10g in 100g fat or lower and 3g in 100g sat fat or lower)
Sugary Foods - anything with refined sugar, its nasty stuff and unbalances blood sugar levels, dont confuse natural sugars such as in fresh fruit with man made sugar.
Caffeine if possible - releases sugar from the liver which is what gives you the kick but then your body can crave sugary foods to replace it.

most fruit and veg are very low cal and make great snack, bananas are super food and can give a real energy boost plus have a lot of vitamins etc

if you can use an olive oil light rather than veg oil etc, it costs a little more but is much much healthier for you and one bottle lasts me about 12 weeks

Three cheers for the Eric-Meister - always around to give good, solid advice and speaking from the heart!! :T How's Day 2 without SWMBO Eric? Got that minstrel to the next level yet?? (My DS plays Runescape all the time, he babbles on about it to me but I have no idea what it's about either!!)

To those who are feeling down, I feel for you. I've never suffered from anything like what you are all going through so I wont attempt any platitudes, they will just sound hollow coming from me. The only medication I have been on is thyroxine (which I've been taking since I had half my thyroid gland removed about 18 years ago) and the worst injury I've ever had is tendonitis in one ankle this time last year when I took up jogging for the first time - but some physio and a good pair of running shoes took care of that. The only thing that's brining me down at the moment is that MIL seems to be going downhill; shes been having a break from the chemo for a couple of weeks because she is so poorly and her doctor was coming to see her yesterday, she say not to discuss when she goes back to it but if. :( She didn't call last night, which she would have done if there had been good news.............

Had a heavy weekend, eating out too many times and too much snacking in between (plus DS's chocolate birthday cake!). Not looking forward to the WI tomorrow

Thanks so much to you all for your sympathies. I know it's a silly little thing, compared to so many other things that others, and even I have experienced, but we all like a bit of recognition, don't we? Thankfully I can come here, and I get that anyway! :D

I grabbed the bull by the horns yesterday, and began to make big efforts to sort out the mess and disorder in the house that's been gnawing away in the back of my mind. The clutter stacks up, the dust bunnies start to over run the downstairs, and the kitchen floor appeared to have become a new life form! All tackled fully yesterday, and I even managed to unpack/sort/put away/discard the contents of 3 housemove boxes (from a year ago)! At least all of that is practical stuff I can sort out.

Eric - I appreciated the good advice, and suggestion that I go to a 'happy place'. A wander around the garden centre may well be on the cards this week methinks! Part of the reason I've not bought a flatscreen TV yet, is that so many friends' have developed faults. We're still using the TV bought back in the 90's, and it works just fine, has scart sockets, a remote control and an on/off switch! TBH we don't watch a huge amount of TV, and rarely have appt. for TV progs, altho' I do confess to the Wright Stuff in the mornings, and have loved The Seven Ages of Britain on BBC1, oh, and I love a bit of Countryfile, despite missing John Craven presenting it!

Hezza - sorry to hear about MIL. I hope you hear some news from her soon. What a worrying time!

Welcome Mrs PI - Your food intake does seem quite low calorie wise, and yes, you are definitely sleep deficient. Is there a reason why you are getting so little? I know that when I've had too little sleep I seem to want to eat more too. I've done a little bit of searching online to find a diet plan for you, and most targeted at PCOS sufferers seem to want you to pay to join a plan. However, some free info suggests you follow a diet for a diabetic, as PCOS affects your insulin levels. Victory, a regular poster on here, who has lost over 7 stone now, has diabetes, and has followed Weight Watchers, without actually joining a meeting, but using their books bought at boot fairs or online. She uses their frozen ready meals, which while processed, and not ideal, some do offer the low sugar options, and help her to monitor calorie intake. Eric's suggestion of incorporating as much fresh fruit, veg and lean fresh meats is a good one. If you can have some element of control over the goodness, that has to be a good thing. Have you discussed this with your GP, and could they put you in touch with a professional dietician who could work out a plan for you, and help monitor your health along the way. Are you at risk of diabetes with your PCOS? Post regularly here for maximum support, and you'll have noticed it's not just about food/diet, we have a pretty much 'no holds barred' attitude to banter. We're here to support the whole person, not just your digestive system!

Eldest has requested a remake of the chocolate log chalet cake I made for my BF last year, so I'm off into the kitchen for the next few days again! At least I know that whatever goes into the cake is wholesome and fresh. I'm even going to incorporate a few CurlyWurly bars into this one (trellis or window shutters I'm thinking). Thankfully while surrounded by it, I don't feel like eating it.

I had a good, busy, physically active day yesterday, so plan to do some more of that today. Off to unpack another box, then head out to organise the shed, so the children can have a 'retreat' for themselves, and their friends.

Day 1, BTW went OK, but got slightly scuppered at teatime. I forgot we had a parents' evening at Grammar, and that it was going to last 2 hours! We weren't out of there until after 6pm, when teatime would usually be at, so it was whacking whatever we had in the micro/oven to get all 6 of us fed fast! My 16 y/o has recently started working at a local chippie, and had left 2 big parcels of fish, chips, burger, sausages, etc. in the fridge, so they got put in the oven, and a couple of veggie micro meals got 'pinged'. I ended up with half a fish fillet with a few chips. I didn't even enjoy it, but it was better than a greasy sausage I guess.

I've started off with shredded wheat today, so it's starting well!
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home

    Hi Mrs PI!

I don't know how PCOS affects weight so apologies for my ignorance there, but I'd be very surprised if you needed the cut the calories any more than you are doing in order to lose weight. Have you had any medical/dietician advice?

If your calorie intake is 1200-1500 then this seems very low for someone whose BMR should be around 1750. A moderately active person of your height, age & weight should require around 2700 calories per day to maintain their weight, so a healthy deficit of maximum -20% would leave you with 2160/day. I'd actually say you are more than moderately active :).

If you've been on restricted calories for a little while, your body may have adapted to your new intake, it simply balances itself at the new level and becomes more energy efficient. This means you require significantly fewer calories just to maintain, and the more severe the restriction, the lower your metabolism drops.

Theoretically the metabolism is supposed to return to normal levels when appropriate intake is resumed, but I've never found it quite that simple myself, though I am now maintaining the same weight on approx 500 more calories per day than I was 2 years ago which certainly illustrates the point!

The trouble with (even gradually) raising calories from a starting point of a very low metabolism is obviously that you're likely to gain weight before things settle down again, and I know how hard it is to take that hit.

Perhaps that's something to consider if you feel you've tried everything else :). Good luck with your weight loss!
