I had heard about the fires too but after researching I felt the risk was much lower than a traditional deep fat fryer or even cooking on a hob with hot oil. Plus no smells of cooking oil is a bonus.

    Tefal response

Tefal says that 221 (0.4%) of the 55,000 Actifry units sold in the UK have been reported to suffer from a faulty fan motor overheating.
Tefal claims: 'It is normal for any appliance with a hot air heating system to produce smoke if the fan fails, as this causes the element to overheat and melt the surrounding plastics'. Tefal continues to state that this does not mean that the product will catch fire.
Tefal says it consulted trading standards officers and they agreed that there was no safety issue.
The company adds: 'The Tefal Actifry is completely safe and has been designed to "fail safe". This means that in the event of a product failure, it will shut down safely with all power cut immediately.'
Tefal has set up a dedicated consumer telephone number, 0800 055 3678, for anyone with concerns about this product.
The Tefal Actifry is a fryer that Tefal claims will allow the user to fry enough chips to feed a family using only a spoonful of oil. This is said to make chips contain less fat, and the product more energy efficient.

They deliberately failed a fan on one on watchdog (they actually could not get one to fail lol), they will not catch fire, the plastics melt and give of a small amount of smoke (similar to what a candle gives off when you blow it out, but constantly) but they will not combust (by design). A chip pan on the other hand if its thermostat fails can cause a huge house fire.

Mines 18 months old and has had a fearsome use, its stained under the tray now but thats purely cosmetic and cant be seen when not in use.

I have wondered if the ones that fail are due to the fan bearings become fouled by either to much oil being used or dry herbs being placed in it (u need to mix them into the oil) so that they blow about and end up in the fan.

I have no worries about mine going wrong, I don't monitor it, and for me its is a 1000% must have for anyone who wishes to loose weight. Nothing keeps you more motivated than healthy tasty chips / wedges :) The only gadget I use more is my bamix.

eric - appreciate your slight frustration but we are moving towards the time when you start getting a bit disheartened (by your own admission when you joinded us) so it is really important to keep focussed and keep posting. Every lb still counts and next week might be a big loss.

Thanks for keeping an eye on me :A Im have no doubt that time will come, but for the moment - super motivated, even more so than when is started :j
Eric - I think your programme looks amazing is it one you have devised or something you downloaded ?? Also I think you are doing really well please don't get to dishartened :D

    Thanks also :A

The program I use is written by VidaOne

    http://www.vidaone.com/

There are two program's, one for the PC (VidaOne Diet and Fitness) and one for your mobile phone (My Personal Diet, currently iphone, windows mobile and Palm, (blackberry is coming possibly).

You log every item of every meal, there's about 100,000 items in the database (mostly American) but all the normal foods are there, you can however add foods you eat a lot and search as well. You can copy and paste meals you have already made. You also log all your exercise.

They both do the same thing, so you could get away with only one part, I just find it easier to log everything on the phone (as I always have it) and then print of the charts etc on the PC with its bigger display (you sync the phone to the PC so no need to put everything in twice) The PC also allows you to backup the data which the iphone does not (but windows mobile does)

Well done KPC... you are doing great, keep it up!

    Happy belated bday heatherberry!!

I hope everyone else is doing good...as I said before I am doing phase 1 of the harcombe and it is going quite well so far, I am on day 3 of 5. I am missing fruit the most...but only two more days to go, I never tried Natural Live Yogurt before, and having tried it on Tuesday, I wasn't impressed...you can see I have a sweet tooth, I guess with some honey or sugar it would be too bad, but it was far too bland and bitter for me!!

    Anywhooo....take care every1!!

    Woohoo - KPC - go girl! :T

Thanks for the chart Fred, and well done everyone, whether you've gained, stayed the same or lost.

I'm going to have lost a stone by next week, I'm determined. It's still not going fast enough for my liking, but I'm enjoying life so I can live with that. There's nothing worse than feeling constantly deprived, I just find that demotivates me and I end up failing.

    Have a good week everyone.

    LL :)

p.s. has anyone tried Cadbury's caramel bunnies? They're gorgeous, and only 100 calories per bunny. There's 2 in a pack so self control is required not to eat the other one, alternatively, you could always give it away like I did. ;)

Hope everyone is having a good day. I usually bring lunch in from home but didn't today so decided to go to M&S for a sanwich. i got their count on us mini wrap selection: chilli chicken & mango, nacho chicken, and sweet chilli & king prawn...all for 230 calories. Yum yum yum! Highly recommend them, if anyone is interested.
