Thought I'd report back in case anyone is interested.
I bought Michelin Primacy tyres in the end (middle of Jan), Costco had a special deal on (25% off) so it cost me £263 for a new set of 4.
I could immediately tell they were much quieter than my old tyres but if anyone fuel consumption was worse! However, after the first thousand miles or so it seemed to improve, hard to tell if the fuel consumption change is down to the tyres or not, but my best before the new tyres was 54.6 mpg and since then it's been as high as 64.59 mpg.
The Michelins initially wore quite quickly, 7mm tread when new, down to 6mm within a couple of thousand miles that was worrying but now, after 21,500 miles there is still around 5mm tread on all tyres and it's quite even wear. Grip levels seem to be very good, never had any problems with the car sliding and I had these during the snowy weather we had back in Jan/Feb.
I ran over a huge pot-hole in them literally a couple of days after buying them and thankfully didn't manage to destroy the tyre or I would have been gutted.
I'd buy them again, especially at the price I paid for them!:A0 -

However, reviews are very mixed and I can't find them any cheaper than £80 each which is too expensive even taking the fuel consumption and better durability into account.
Anyone got them and like to comment and does anyone know a good place to get cheap tyres?
I'd need 205/55R/16 speed rating not so important as I rarely go above 70 mph!
Thanks!
I had these on my passat bluemotion, and i know they were definitely a contributor to the 65mpg on average i was getting from it.
One thing i did notice was how far the car could freewheel - it was just amazing - i guess that was testament to the low rolling road resistance.
I found them to be a very good all round tyre - decent wet grip, decent in the dry and it looked like i was going to get an easy 20K mile from the fronts, and way more from the rears.
I'd highly recommend them.0 -
I'm on my second set of Michelin energy savers on the present car. I think they are superb in terms of tyre life and wet and dry grip, for a road car of course.
;)
The reason I have the same tyres again; I bought a set of brand new manufacturers allys and tyres for my car from a guy on ebay, same wheels as mine, tyres and wheels never touched the road £240 inc locking nuts, covers etc :money::money:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Was this a typo, as the Primacy is the premium performance orientated tyre and not the same as the Energy.
Some of our cars at work had Energy's fitted, some had Primacy's.
I have tried both and found both tyres to be quieter and better than the Goodyear's previously fitted, but the Primacy's where far superior in the wet, not as big a difference in the dry, but my preference would be the Primacy's.
I haven't done enough miles in an Energy exqipped car to notice any fuel consumption improvement, but the Zafiras at work never get much more than 18-20mpg anyway.0 -
Have the michellin energy saver tyres on my touran and i dislike them immensely.
They are utterly awful in the wet/snow.
Much prefer the p zeros my passat used to wear (and i got over 30K miles out of them).
The passat also did better mpg but i suspect this is because of the tourans shape and gutless engine.0 -

That said, a lot of the "big boys" are selling off "last seasons tyre" under a different name for litterally half price. I've used Falkens (soft, but very sticky) and Kl!bers (good all round tyre, hard wearing.)
I've deduced the Kl!bers behave very much like a Michellin, so my money is that they're made either by, or under licence by Michellin.

I've been driving 20 odd years and never really found that a particular brand of tyre offers a huge difference in performance, but then I'm not a boy-racer.
Im sorry, but this statement scares the crap out of me......
I might penny pinch on ANY part of my car, but NEVER on tyres.
Even to the point of buying 4 new tyre's for my last car because the previous owner (fleet) had put a mix of brands all round the vehicle.
Tyres are your SINGLE most important factor in keep your car out of the nearest ditch. Each tyre's has a contact area the size of your palm, and this is literally all that stands between you and the pearly gates.
As for "driver ability", any good driver will know the value of a decent set of tyre's.
Car manufacturers spend millions of £ and months of testing on finding the best tyre for ever new car they produce!
Then 4 years down the line some pillock has the original tyre on the rear right (all cracked and dried out), a "Mega Hamster Tiger" on the rear left, a "Super Hedgehog GX" on the front left and a "Ditch Finder XLS" on the front right........“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I know i shouldn't laugh but i loved the fact you made them into the XLS model.0 -
On the subject of crap tyres, I was looking around CarCraft a year or so ago, as the wife was looking for a supermini, I figured as they were nearby i would have a look.
Imagine my horror when I noticed a 3 yr old WRX Impreza with two new tyres on the front, they were LingLongs!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have used Nankangs before, and in a 215/45/17 they weren't too bad, they also wore quite well, they are the only budget tyre I would touch.0
