Broadband receiving constant errors - HELP!!!

  • Thanks guys... Changing suppliers is not as easy as you may think - I am with Pipex Homecall (originally Bulldog) which is LLU. They provide my phone line and broadband so would I have to take the phone back to BT and then look for broadband supplier. Could go to virgin (cable) but is much more expensive than I currently pay. Anyway, I am generally happy with the service Pipex provide - it's just the customer service (in my past experience) that sucks!!!

markymoo - yes, it is one of those adsl/BT sockets -I did not realise I did not need filters on my phones with that - infact when the BT guy installed it he said I still needed filters on my phones but, I must admit, I did wonder why!!!

Right, time to go shopping for a modem/router then...

Have you had a normal filter plugged into the faceplate filter? I could be wrong, but I've heard that can cause problems.

And btw, if I had access to cable I'd be signing up in a heart beat ;)

This sounds like an intermittent line/exchange issue.....why ?? because it sounds like your line is intermittently flooding with errors as is mine at the moment :( And the nice Openreach LAN eng bod who came out recons I need a new line to solve it :), and I'm waiting for dates....

Think you'll need to bite the bullet and call Pipex........
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Oh dear, if you don't fancy dealing with Pipex then you're not going to enjoy the minefield that is Openreach. Just be sure it's Pipex who get the engineer out and double check that it is going to be a broadband engineer as the 'normal' line engineers wouldn't spot a physical line fault if it sat on their face.

Also, as a final word of warning, if the guy turns up and finds that it's your equipment causing the problem you will be charged a few hundred pounds for the call out ( this can even be as unfair as a neighbors Home Hub system so be careful). If it's a fault on the equipment outside your house then Openreach should make the repairs for free.

I'd still try the router first though.

Thanks GunJack, I was worried this may be a line or exchange fault.

Any advice on how to explain the problem to Pipex before they have me running around changing wires/filters using test socket etc - ie, all the things I have allready eliminated - which are on their scripts?

however, the OP should only deal direct with his ISP, and the ISP then deal with OR. I'm on tiscali LLU (pipex owners) but it's them that deal with OR, not the customer direct :)

Thanks again GunJack, I realise that - it's just being able to explain the fault to Pipex that concerns me at the moment... at least in a way they will understand!

But you haven't done those things yet (change filters and plug into test socket)-have you?
You need to make all these tests for your own protection, because if it turns out to be a fault in your PC, modem/router or your internal wiring downstream of the master socket, then OpenReach will bill you (or your ISP, who will seek to recover it from you).
This is why Pipex will insist that you run all these checks with them before they will call out OR.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
