From Minimins (and my consultant!)
This is the story of Mrs Ivy Been So Good.
Ivy was really disappointed this week having maintained after ‘such a good week’. She couldn’t understand - her Food Diary was perfect! Ten Syns per day… maximum! Let’s take a closer look at a typical day...
Ivy has her normal breakfast of branflakes, milk and a banana. She tips them into the bowl, and then thinks. ‘I’d better just check the weight of them - I want to get a few pounds off this week!’ She puts them on the scales to find they weigh 1½oz. ‘That’s my first Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice,’ she thinks, taking out the excess and unconsciously popping them in her mouth.
As she puts the milk away she spots an open carton of orange juice and decides to have a small glass whilst making a boiled egg for her daughter’s breakfast. When clearing up the dishes, Ivy spies two left over soldiers. ‘I can’t remember the last time I had REAL butter!’ she thinks, and into her mouth they go!
After breakfast it’s a trip into town shopping. Armed with a Ryvita Luxury Goodness bar, just in case temptation strikes, she sets off.
In WH Smiths, her daughter gets restless in the buggy and Ivy opens her a packet of crisps to keep her quiet. And she ends up testing a couple herself – just for freshness!
Lunchtime comes and the shopping trip is not done yet - there’s still money left on Ivy’s credit card! And as she knows she’ll be a while she decides to grab something from Marks & Spencer’s healthy Count On Us range as ‘it’s bound to be low on Syns!’
Spoilt for choice, Ivy scans the range. She’s already decided to go ‘Original’ today and spots a Hoisin duck sandwich. ‘That’s a great choice… the bread will be my second Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice!’ she thinks. She buys it as a meal deal, along with a diet coke and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps - to eat later.
Later on, Starbucks beckons and Ivy stops for a coffee. ‘No cake for me though!’ she say, savouring the skinny latte she’s treated herself to thanks to her second Healthy ‘a’ choice! – There’s no syrup of course! As she takes the weight off her feet she congratulates herself for not needing the 'emergency' Kellogg's bar whilst out today.
Back at home after shopping, she makes cakes with her daughter. She resists the fairy cakes when they come out of the oven… but CAN’T resist licking the wooden spoon!
She feeds her daughter early – a chicken nugget and two chips remain on the plate – and they don’t go in the bin!
Dinnertime comes – a nice juicy steak, fresh salad and a filling jacket potato. She weighs her 8oz jacket potato which is a Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice and puts a spoonful of Quark in it. A tablespoon of Hellmann’s Light Mayo goes on the salad – ‘only 2½ Syns’! She says, ‘my first today!’
Her hubby prefers mashed potato with his. She wouldn’t dream of eating it herself, but she does just taste it to check it contains the right amount of butter and milk!
Dessert for Ivy is a Müllerlight yogurt. Hubby has sponge pudding and custard. ‘It just doesn’t bother me,’ Ivy says, licking the spoon she used to stir the custard!
By 9.30pm Ivy fancies a ‘little something else’. Remembering the crisps she picked up with the meal deal, she checks the Syn value and finds they’re only 7 Syns. ‘Only 9½ Syns today’ she thinks, ‘that’s a perfect day!
...Or was it?!
How many Syns do you think Ivy really had?
The actual amount is 76½ Syns!
The breakdown:
½ oz branflakes
2½Syns
Orange juice 125ml
2½Syns
Eggy soldiers
4 Syns
Couple of crisps
1 Syn
Sandwich
12½ Syns
(6 Syns can be deducted if using bread as Healthy
Latte
8½ Syns (Grande from Starbucks)
Cake mixture
4 Syns
Jacket potato
16 Syns (Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice already used
which she forgot!) (2 Syns per oz)
Mayo
7½ Syns (it was a heaped tablespoon
not level!)
Chicken nugget
3 Syns
2 chips
3 Syns
Spoonful of mash
3 Syns
Spoonful of custard
2 Syns
Packet of crisps
7 Syns
Just to put this into perspective, those 76½Syns are the equivalent of; an average portion of Chicken Tikka Masala, Pilau rice, 1 naan bread, two pints of beer, and two small vegetable samosas! We’d all know if we ate that!0 -
HI, Just a quickie before I head up to bed, I promise to come and introduce myself properly tomorrow!
I joined Slimming world yesterday for the first time and just wanted to double check the extra easy plan. I am exclusively breastfeeding my 4 month old so the consultant advised me that I would need four additional healthy extras and to try and use all 15 syns every day. Is this true even on the extra easy plan? I have tried it today and I honestly couldn't face 6 healthy extras and only managed 9 syns?

Morning All
Mande it through again yesterday, the last couple of days although they have been good and I have lost I have struggled. Last night was not the chilled out night I had wanted and expected, still made it to bed quite early which is good but the meal I had planned and look forward to by the time I got to the kitchen I just couldn't be bothered with all the boiling and stuff so my meal was filliet steak and dry fried/griddled sp? monge tout/sweetcorn that it no sauce potatoes nothing, so i had a small glass of wine with the 7 syns I had left and went to bed.
I think its the dark nights and the cold its getting to me I just want to be in bed
Maybe I'm sickening for something. You know when you just can't be bothered with anything...........
Anyway Skint_Catt, I love that tale I always enjoyed it when it was read in my group, its soooo true and so easy to do its a good reminder of if you don't follow it 100% how easy it is to slip.
Today is a green day for me today
I'm not having breakfast today as I (again)can't be bothered, I do have a banana and apple at work that i can have. 2 alpen lights HEB and 250 SS Milk HEA.
Mushroom/broccoli pasta 28g cheese HEA - 2.5syns light mayo.
For dinner tonight I haven't quite decided its either more Broc pasta or more likely a be good noodle thingy that i will have to check the syns of when i get to work.
Hope everyone has a good day

Oh and can someone tell me how to make syn free pancakes (and are they any good?) and is there a way to make syn free humous? never tried even the ready made stuff before but I need to get out of a rut so wanted to try some new things
This is how I make the pancakes - 2 eggs, seperated, vanila essence, granular sweetener. Whisk up the egg whits until they are fluffy. add the sweetener. Add a few drops of vailla essence to teh egg yolk,, then gently fold into the egg whites. Carefully pour into a hot pan sprayed with frylight. Just be careful turning them over, as they are more delicate than normal pancakes! This makes 2 pancakes, generally its 1 egg per pancake.
Have never tried making humous! Im not a huge fan of it anyway.0 -

Is your baby exclusively breastfed? If so, id try & manage as many H extras as you canmanage, especially the A choices. I think its important that you keep up your calcium intake. Maybe not as important for the B choices, so maybe you dont have to have all those. When your baby is weaned onto food, its not quite as important. Can you treat yourself to a wee synful treat during the day? Surely it cant be that hard0 -

Hi everyone,
Hope you are all well today.
Well had my third WI last night and lost 2 and half pounds! Im v happy - thats 9 and a half pounds in 3 weeks.
I go to my class on a Wed nite but its my birthday next wed so hadn't planned to go (and wrote it down in the holiday book that I'd be off). But now that I've thought about it, I'd still like to get weighed so i might go to a different class next week for one week only.
There isn't a starbucks near me but the city im going to with a friend for my birthday there is and I heart starbucks and would like to have a birthday treat. Does anyone know the syn value of Chai lattes? (I'll be asking for a small one with skimmed milk) and any kind of biscuit/cake/muffin or cookie that's not very high in syns?
With winter getting colder and my work being uber cold does anyone know of any free convience soups (on green, please) that I could have instead of making some (as most of it gets thrown away as its just me that eats it and I always think its a waste of veg)
Many Thanks in advance .

I live on what you eat when I'm not doing SW - so I have to do red's now to get a weight loss. Maybe try reds or EE for a few days this week?
Hi, thanks for the suggestion - am going to have a red day today given that we've just done a massive shop.
Here's my menu:
B: 300ml skim milk (HEA) with 1 tsp cocoa & sweetener (1 syn), baked apple with sultanas (4 syns) and LF nat yog (I know there is a debate over the cooking of fruit, but I think I can call it a piece of fruit??)
S: apple
L: Tuna nicoise which includes small baked potato chopped up (HEB) and 1 tsp olive oil in dressing (1-2 syns?), large ff activia yog
S: appleCod Mornay per SW magazine & green beans or broc/cauli (OH will have potato with his to keep his calorie intake up)
Hopefully I should be ok with this - is 3 apples in a day a bit much?!
I have to admit I have had a couple of days off the wagon, which I know is the wrong thing to do, but it did make me realise that those things that I think are a nice treat are not as nice as I remember.... if that makes sense!0 -
PS - does anyone know the syn value of soy beans on red? The book says they are free food on green, so I would imagine they have some hefty syns on red.
I just can't find them in the directory... not sure what section to look under? can't see them in the veg section?0 -
Thank you for the story Skint_Catt.. it's just reminded me that as I was making a cake yesterday and being very virtuous that I wasn't going to eat any, I licked the spoon a couple of times AND tested the butter cream!
I'm going to go and add a few sins to yesterday's diary now!August Shopping Challenge. 26/8. Budget £250 Spent £256.81.. £6.81 over. So £0.00 a day left.0
