Broomstick - I see what you mean about the 60th anniversary episode - it wasn't even particularly well acted! Better last night, though.

Here are my 5 for yesterday if I can remember!

    1) Played the piano for a bit.

    2) Helped bigger son with his Airfix model.

    3) Watched Holby City and thought it quite a good episode.

    4) Made a jelly ready for tea today.

    5) MrN came round. :-)

    Evening all...

Well isn't it just awful having to go back to work after all this lovely time off??! Anyway, hugs to those who truly desserve them, not moaners like me whose only problem is the return to the 'real world'!
    Pleasures today:
    1. Nice to see work people and be wished happy new year from people I hardly know or speak to!
    2. First group I taught this morning weren't too bad - I was worried they would be awful given they definitely don't want to be back after the hols.
    3. HM chicken, ham and leek pie leftovers for lunch
    4. Had an interesting discussion with my afternoon group about foraging and the eating of wild game - some of them were really shocked that it was possible to eat squirrel!
    5. Easy tea and quite evening in cuddling the poochlet as OH is out.

    Evening all,

hope you all had a good day back in reality.

    1) Pressed snooze on my alarm this morning and got another 25 minutes snooze. I NEVER do that and I still made it in ok.

    2) A colleague brought in some doughnuts and flapjacks to cheer us up... I had two doughnuts and a flapjack!! Greedy! Really I was just protecting everyone else's diet - I selfless that way.

    3) Received a mobile charger from a lovely freecycler for my personal phone.

    4) NSD :)

    5) Monthly meeting that I usually dread (or make up elaborate excuses not to attend) lasted a grand total of 2 minutes.

    Night night everyone... keep warm.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

    Evening

    Pleasures for today:
    1. Managed to get up with the alarm without too much of a struggle
    2. Walked to work as left the house a bit earlier than usual. Mean't I arrived at the office fresh and awake plus a little better off than if I had got the bus
    3. A parcel arrived at work for me today with a few bits in that I had ordered before christmas so they have gone into the present cupboard for birthdays this year
    4. Yummy chilli beef enchiladas for dinner followed by last nights left over bakewell tart
    5. Made a big pan of chicken and veg soup for lunches this week

Hugs to all who need them. I'm not long out of my bed, think I need an early night.

Evening all. I'm glad to see everyone's had a decent-ish first day back in reality land (inasmuch as that's possible :().

Broomstick - I hope your DSs get better now. :)

I've been feeling a bit :( again today - I think it's just the realisation that, with Christmas over, there's now another 2 to 3 months of winter left with nothing much to look forward to. I actually had a pretty good day today, which makes the :(ness even more annoying. Hey ho.

    1) Another day off today, so one last lie-in.

    2) Went into Chichester to do some shopping, and got the item I went there for double-reduced: once as it was RTC, then a further reduction as the only one left was the display model, which didn't have a box. :j

    3) Also got some new earrings. I didn't really need them (although I argue that I always need more earrings :o), but they were heavily reduced so that makes it kind of OK - right? ;)

    4) Had a very pleasant pub lunch, partly spent talking to another customer, a former professional footballer (or rather being talked at, but in an interesting way), and partly watching the people walking past, which is a favourite hobby of mine.

    5) Nice easy dinner of HM chicken and hampie, from the freezer, mash, which was leftover from a previous meal, and some cabbage.

    6) Finally got round to watching the drama of Nigel Slater's autobiography which was on over Christmas - very good if a touch  in places.

I'm back to work tomorrow, so I'm shortly off for an early night. Have a pleasant rest-of-evening, all.
Back after a very long break!

Well, an earlier post than normal but I wanted people to know that I've HAD A GOOD DAY!!! I wish there could be more like this, think of the things I'd be able to get done! I don't know what happened to the usual complete lack of confidence/self loathing/feeling on the verge of tears but it wasn't there...

    Anyway, 5 for today.

    1) Looked after my sons and MrN's from 10-7. (The youngest 6 sons, the oldest is grown up and has his own house). And everyone got on well. No fighting, no silliness, everyone was polite to me and ate everything.

    2) Got all the housework done in my house and the washing done in both houses.

    3) Couldn't get through to anyone on the phone but have a list ready for tomorrow to deal with the final debt (will need yet another phone call to the Financial Ombudsman).

    4) Have been playing the piano just now.

    5) Will watch Holby City in a minute and listen to the Archers on iplayer.

Don't know if MrN will come round later, he looked very tired when he got back from work.

    Hi all

DitaBombita, welcome back and congratulations on your marriage!

CCP sorry that you are still feeling sad, I hope that it gets better. Think it like this, we are past the Winter Solstice so the days are getting longer and longer, before you know it will be spring!

Edited to add: Frith, just saw your post (we must have been posting almost at the same time) and I am really happy for your good day, that's great news!

Here are my pleasures for today:

1 - Managed to get a lot done, in fact I was very busy today so I did not have time to miss DH on his first day back at work!

2 - Slavaged a batch of homemade baked beans which I had salted too much by adding more cooked unsalted beans and a few chopped potatoes. Cooked it all together again until potatoes went soft and it turned into a delicious mushy stew. We had it for lunch on toast and it was great!

3 - DS hoovered the corridor and stairs and DD cleaned the cooker, so the house is looking in a decent state for the time being.

4 - I put a wash outside to dry on the line! Even if I had to take it down to finish after a few hours and hang it indoors, it still got that fresh outdoor smell.

5 - Managed to do a decent shopping without using the supermarket at all, as per challenge - even if passing M&S I felt the temptation, I felt really virtuous for resisting and coming back home with the trolley full of stuff bought in local independent shops.

6 - Watched the DVD of The Hangover with DH and DS, really funny (particularly after last night when we watched a very slow and depressing film!).

    Good night everybody xxx
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

:)CCP, thank you for the thought. DS1 is half better (and not the best company to be with), DS2 is still coughing, not badly enough to see a doctor, I reckon, but sleeping dreadfully with a night time temperature that's all over the shop and he keeps having nightmares because of it. I think it just needs to run its course.
I'm sorry that 'sad' is living with you at the moment too. Keep reminding yourself of pleasures. There are days when I hang onto this like anything. :)

Frith, really glad you had a good one today. Lovely.
(Oh, and I'm one of the very long term Archers listeners who is now walking away from the programme. I need positive uplifting stuff so this will be my last mention of that soap!)

Caterina, good luck with your no supermarket challenge. You are one step ahead of me with that one. I'm just aiming for a once a week shop for food and fuel and a once a month shop for everything else. When that's going well, I'll join you with the local shopping only.

Some very good things for me today:

!. Lovely veggiebox arrived. I rang the suppliers because they'd had an 'order three boxes get the fourth free' deal on before Christmas and I couldn't see anywhere that the code had been applied to my bills. They'd made a mistake so next week's box will be free. :D

    2. I'd broken a big part of a Lakeland kitchen gadget over Xmas - my mistake - and I'd asked in the shop if I could replace it rather than buy a whole new one. They rang today to say that the the part was in and when I asked about the cost of it, they told me it was free . I got the sales person to double check (I reckon it must have cost at least £15) and she got back to me to say that, yes, it was free and said 'That's Lakeland for you'. What service!:D

    3. Did my weekly food shop as planned (to add to the veg delivery) and got everything else I needed for all suppers and lunches at home, all packed lunch food and enough stuff to make treatsy extras. I replaced everything we'd used from the backup food stores over Xmas and added a bit more. I filled the car up with fuel as well. That should now be my only day of spending until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. I'm determined to get this working as a way of shopping. :D

    4. The Xmas lights were still on in town when I drove home. They look so pretty and appropriate to the place, not over the top but plentiful and in lovely colours - they'll be gone when I go there again so it was good to see them one last time. :D

    5. I've found a home for my new sewing basket. It fits exactly under the sitting room coffee table so it's out of the way but will always be to hand. Gradually, gradually, I'm getting there with the saying 'A place for everything and everything in its place'. :D

    Sleep well

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement Broomstick, and well done on what you already do for your shopping, we all need to find our comfort zone and when you find that it is feasible for you and your needs, then you will go local, I am sure.

For me shopping locally and ordering organic veg is already a lifestyle choice that I made a long time ago so there is no glory there! The challenge for me now is to avoid going to the supermarket to top up with inessentials (in my view - the kids would not agree with this, of course, for them Goodfellas pizza is a must!).
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Yes, we've been organic as much as possible for years. It's the one thing I've tried not to let go of when money is tight. My children haven't quite realised the implications of what this is all heading towards in terms of the junk/ready-made food they like such as bought pizzas. Shhh!:rotfl:
