What a lovely cheery thread I have found here. Can I join. I love keeping a gratitude journal but this is so good as it is OS! I never really focus that my things to be grateful for are OS so this is a good way to think about it.
In my journal yesterday I wrote
    1. woke up without the alarm clock feeling very alive
    2. delivered a Wowser presentations which I received a standing ovation for
    3. lunch was provided following my presentation and it was delicious
    4. the colours on the drive back home were stunning and I was being paid to enjoy the drive
    5. seeing an owl in the hedge with 2 fledglings - made my day
When thinking of it like this it is hard to stop writing things.
Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow -- Mary Anne Radmacher

Good morning :hello: - though there isn't very much 'good' about it today - sounds wet/drippy outside - hibernation anybody?

Frith - sorry to hear you didn't get a 'little haul of goodies' from the charity shops - never mind ........ there's always next time :j. Used to love my boys playing with lego - kept them entertained for hours.
Blimus - sorry to hear about your power cut, but just look at the bonus of quality time with your boys :T - wd on your game pie AND the hm pastry .
molly - welcome back to the forum !your chilli jam sounds good - do you have a recipe please?
Caterina - morning - sorry to hear you've still got your bugs - have you tried the Lemon/Honey/Glycerine that Parsonswife mentions? I personally use Lemon/Honey/Whisky but that's just ME! Even if you use 'Jif Lemon' it still tastes good and seems to ease raspy throats.
beachbaby - sorry to hear that you were feeling so low - these ex's certainly have a knack of lowering morale . Pin an old photo of him to a cushion and give it a few punches - makes you feel a heck of a lot better :rotfl:. Wd on your HM Cottage Pie - we're having that tonight . Wd to your DD1 on coping better at school :T - they are a worry after a separation.
Ladyhawk - good luck with your new property venture - I'm sure you won't miss your neighbour ;).
Parsonswife - very similar recipe to one that I sometimes use :T. I think Glycerine is on Rollback in Asda this week.
wogglemaker - another one who's been poorly - great that you're back out of hospital. Good Luck with the decluttering, but be careful of any dust etc that may be on stuff in the loft - don't want to trigger anything off again.
Tealady - bet your work colleagues loved you for those chocolate muffins :D - enjoy your couple of days off work.
Kitchenbunny - having a giggle imagining your mum's name for veg soup :rotfl:. Hope the driving lesson went well.
villagelife - wtg on the ebaying/decluttering.
house elf - ((((HUGS)))) for you after your horrible day. You deserved your Orange Wednesday evening and whoopsied cooked chicken :T.
cherisong - oh dear, looks like I crossed posts with you. Welcome to the thread :hello:. wtg on your work presentation AND a freebie lunch thrown in too - rare thing in these days of cutbacks. What a beautiful journey you had - sunsets AND a family of owls.

    Mine for yesterday:

    1. Received a 'tube' parcel in the post and discovered a 'tree' inside. Had completely forgotten about sending for it ages ago from a toilet roll company - so a lovely start to the day. Now we need to find somewhere to plant it ..........

    2. Finally managed to finish making the Carrot & Butterbean Soup and froze a few containers of it .

    3. Took advantage of the lovely weather yesterday and got a load of washing (mostly) dried on the line - finished off on rad-rails and airer in the evening WITHOUT resorting to the TD :j.

    4. Curry for tea - mine was a frozen whoopsied one from ages ago but OH brought his in with him (naughty boy - but he paid for it!). In his defence, he knew that the three in the freezer were ones that he didn't like, so can let him off!

    5. Spoke to my sister on the phone for a while - still no signs of the overdue baby - poor thing answered the phone in a panic. Niece has now been driving around, looking for 'humpty-back bridges' to drive over, in an attempt to kick-start things :rotfl:. There's still an outside chance that this shawl will be finished BEFORE baby arrives.

    6. My DS1 has now lost over two and a half stone and is so proud of himself when he has to hoist his denims and make new belt holes :T.

    7. Defrosted minced beef and put soup/broth mix to soak last night. Will be putting it all together for a Cottage Pie Mixture later. Should make enough for one for tonight and a batch to freeze for another day.

Hope everybody has a great OS Day - ooooh look the 'dripping' has now stopped and the sun is shining :j.

((((BIG HUGS)))) for all who are all fed up, depressed or generally not well - hope you're soon feeling better - love Ollie xxx
  • Ollie - Recipe is from Nigella's Christmas book: http://www.nigella.com/recipes/view/chilli-jam-2692
It is super easy to make and DH would give his right arm for a jar! (he eats it with every meal and even has it in his sandwiches!) Apparently it tastes like a hot sweet and sour sauce (I don't like chillis so I haven't tried it myself) and it sets like a jelly. It looks very pretty in the jar and would make an excellent present for a foodie.

Here are my 5 for yesterday:

    - Suffering slightly at the mo with an arthritis flare-up which has made me feel quite poorly at times and I am not very mobile either. So have been entering competitions again to cheer myself up. There is nothing quite like the thrill of getting an unexpected win through the post. I have been quite lucky so far and I really enjoy doing it too.
    - DH working in London (120 miles away) meant that he got home earlier than if he was working in Bristol (6 miles away) :rotfl:
    - Made some cornish pasties, even making my own pastry. They turned out really well and very tasty.
    - Watching DD do new things - she fed herself her tea with a spoon and managed to figure out the shape sorter for herself. Where has my baby gone?
    - Being toasty warm in my house whilst its frosty cold outside, bliss.

    Hi all

Pasronswife and Ollie, thanks for the honey/lemon/glycerine (or whisky) recipe for cough, funny enough yesterday I was speaking with my friend in Italy (btw she is a doctor, but still relies on tried and tested home methods!) and she was telling me to do the same - or as an alternative, which Ollie no doubt will like, cooked wine - put a large glass of wine to cook on a strong flame and boil hard for a while, add a few cloves, then drink very hot when it has reduced a bit and is syrupy. These recipes all sound good and I shall give them all a try (wine included!).

wogglemaker, sorry to hear about your bout of illness and stay in hospital and I am glad you are out now and feeling better.

Tealady and kitchenbunny, your mention of such early rises really put me to shame, these days that I am not going to work I am up no earlier than 9am!

Beachbaby, I am sorry that you are experiencing difficult times, and hope that things settle for you (((HUGS)))

    Welcome to the thread, cherisong!

    Mollie
thank you for the Nigella chili jam recipe, I want to make that, it sounds delicious!

Here are my pleasures for yesterday:

1 - Marked improvement in my health, not so much cough and a lot more energy.

2 - Breakfast with DS, as always we spend some lovely time together in the morning after he comes back from his paper rounds. He does 4 a day and is very grateful for a hot breakfast after being out in the cold of the early morning.

3 - Managed to get a lot done around the house, as I was feeling so much better, including tidy and clean my bedroom (it really needed it).

4 - Dry, sunny weather meant I could still hang washing out on the line so I took advantage and did 2 washes.

5 - I made a gorgeous risotto with pumpkin (gift from another allotment owner) and spinach (from our garden), with goat cheese and parmesan, followed by apple and (frozen) fruit of the forest compote with custard. All the family loved it!

And I already have more pleasures for today even if it is only morning:

1 - I managed to get two freebie cinema tickets at our local Picturehouse to go and see My Afternoons with Margueritte (with Gerard Depardieu)

2 - Another lovely breakfast with DS, baked beans (homemade) for both and poached eggs for him.

3 - After a long agonising time trying to make up my mind I decided that I am not going to let my hair go grey after all and booked an appointment with a hairdresser who takes models - tomorrow I am going to cover these dreadful roots, which are really going on my nerves.

I shall update on more pleasures later. Have a good day everybody xxx

Edited to add a few more pleasures for today, following from the earlier ones:

4 - Lovely sooup lunch of lentils, leftover baked beans and end-of-cabbage witha bit of stock and spices. Served with fried croutons and chopped parsley (end of packet, too!). DS's friend commented that the presentation looks like a magazine photo! We all loved it.

5 - A friend came along and brought me some home-grown grapes. As they are a bit sour I shall turn them into Grape Jelly. She said that she has a spare vine to give me to put in the allotment!

6 - Anticipating the pleasure of an evening knitting and eating takeaway curry with a friend who is coming to encourage me to pick up the knitting needles and jumper that I have now neglected for nearly 2 years!

Have a great evening everybody xxx
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Just got in from school so a quick 5 for yesterday (Weds).

    1) Washing machine man came. Got half a load of washing washed before there was another grinding noise and it stopped again... Still, he is booked in again for Monday!

    2) Made a mammoth shepherd's pie for my sons and MrN's and it was quite nice.

    3) Felt reasonably organised.

    4) MrN called round. :-)

    5) Had the wood burning stove going full pelt (haven't got central heating) and it was lovely and warm as was the hot water bottle that went to bed with me.

    Evening all,

I am having a Eyore day today. The work stress has got to me for some reason - probably a result of sleeping exceptionally badly (unusual for me). I woke up a number of times worrying about various things. Then when I got in to work it just started and didn't stop. I got like this a few years ago and ended up having a really tough few months so I hope with the help of this thread I will be able to keep on top of things.

So I might struggle with pleasures today:

    1) beautiful sunny (cold!) morning

    2) B&J ice cream

    3) Got my car back from the garage - and it didn't cost me any more money. I managed to convnce them that I had already paid them enough to fix it last time therefore shouldn't pay anything this time.

    4) Leaving work early to pick up my car. I can't face it any more.

Um - I think that's it for tonight. It will be an early night for me and hopefully I can sleep all the way through. I'll need it for tomorrow. My friend from work had an appointment today to see if the cancer had returned so I will find out tomorrow... and my mum gets her results back tomorrow so it could be a very draining day.

    Night everyone

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.
  • Hi Mollie and woggle, good to see you back
Caterina - glad to hear that you're feeling a bit better.
beachbaby - sorry to hear that you're not having a good couple of days. (()) Here's hoping things look brighter soon.
Ladyhawk - exciting news about your property buying. Good luck!
villagelife - nice that your DS phoned just for a chat :)
house elf - sounds like you had a great evening at the cinema. Was it a good film? My Ds's both want to see it.
Hi cherisong - welcome to this, the bestest of the regular threads! Lucky you seeing an owl family - what a beautiful sight that must have been.
Ollie - your carrot and butterbean soup sounds so good. I think I may aim for that on next weeks meal plan

Had a much better day today.

    1) Turned the heating on (we have storage heaters) so we woke up to a nice toasty house.
    2) We were trapped inside for the whole day as BT have dug up our road and I've had to park in the neighbours drive so can't get past the big trench. However, this turned out okay cos it meant it was a NSD.
    3) Gammon is in the slow cooker (cooking in cherry coke) and I am serving it soon with lentils, carrots and onions and twice-baked jacket pots. Looking forward to that immensely!
    4) The whole family have had a wii fit tournament. It's been a couple of months since we did that and it was nice to play together (while keeping fit).
    5) Boys did some good work today. Lessons always seem to go better when the weather is cold for some reason

Hugs to everyone who needs them.

  • 2. Reading "The Girl Who Played With Fire" again. I started it on the station this morning and had got about 2 pages into it when the guard came over and said "Great book - hope you've got the other 2." I have, and I shall enjoy reading those again too.

All three stories are excellent, such a shame the author is no longer with us.

    1. DD2 on the mend (caught the bug from DD1!)
    2. Stunning day
    3. Roaring fire
    4. Midwife appointment prompt, efficient and heard the heartbeat!
    5. One more day until half term.
Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x
  • Good evening all. Blimus, Caterina and Olliebeak, many thanks for your good wishes. A better day today and I'll tell you for why,
    1. Got my (whispers) period. Not great in itself but explains why I felt really down the last couple of days (other than the obvious).
    2. A quiet day at work, after being so busy yesterday it was a welcome relief.
    3. My mum brought us some cookies and sweets to take with us tomorrow.
    4. Dog looking so cute in her new red jumper. I bought it because I dont want her getting cold in kennels, she is getting older now.
    5. Looking forward to our Blackpool illuminations trip and night away tomorrow. DD1 especially really needs a break, she's a bit of a mess at the moment with all thats gone on. (((Hugs))) to her.
    Best wishes to all.X

    Evening,

Caterina - Your risotto sounds so yummy, I was drooling reading about it

Ladyhawk - Hugs to you and I hope your friend and mum get good news tomorrow

    Pleasures for today:
    1. Made time for tea and toast this morning at home before leaving for work
    2. Lovely lunch at the pub with the girls, so lots of laughter
    3. Lift home from work so could feed DD a decent dinner before guides as home earlier
    4. Cottage pie for dinner which just needed to go in the oven as it was the result of my batch cooking session earlier in the week
    5. Another training walk tonight while DD was at guides, I managed to do 8 miles as a power walk pace. I know it know though legs feel like jelly:eek:

    Sneaky 6th
looking forward to a day off tomorrow and taking DD to Britains Next Top model Live plus going with one of her friends and one of mine so should be a good day.

Hugs to all who need them
