Good evening all. Been feeling a bit down this afternoon as DH has no hours at work at all now. It couldn't really have come at a worse time but we'll get through and others are going through so much more.

I have 5 pleasures though as I always try to keep finding joy in the little things in life as much as possible. Plus we are all a lovely little community of such caring people here - thank you.HSpray.gif

    1. I started out this morning making a Lentil Dhal curry for tea and I was going to put chicken strips in it to tempt the kids into eating it. As I was making it I decided it was pretty horrible, fortunately this was before the chicken went in ;), so I added extra stock and some chilli powder and called it Spiced Lentil Soup with Ginger :rotfl::rotfl: DH & I had some for our lunch and it was gorgeous.

    2. I also made some Apricot Scones from the OS Daily Thread this morning using some very, very cheap (29p for 4) apricot & passion fruit yoghurts and they were also lovely. We had such a homemade lunch today :T

    3. After a big let down yesterday due to the diabetic nurse not turning up MIL finally got to her nursing home this afternoon. She very much likes her room.

    4. The dogs make me laugh so much every day. They are exasperating, messy, noisy at times and give the poor cats a run for their money but they never fail to cheer me up.

    5. I realised today that it's my MSE forum board birthday next week - I can't believe it's a year since I joined!

Ollie Don't worry too much about 'senior moments' my Mum & daughter have always had them. Mum has an excuse as she's 69 but DD is only 17 HSlol.gif Don't know about you needing the nursing home I wouldn't mind booking myself in for a week of rest :D;):p

Take care all & have a good evening xxx
  • Raspberry Swirl, thanks for the advice, I was a bit heavy handed with the mixing:eek: and used softened butter, not oil. Will search for a recipe with oil in it tonight. Will report back with the results. x:A

Many welcomes and welcomes back to all lurkers and posters -
    An interesting week.
Entered no.1 shed in the dark, put hand in crate under velvet curtain to reach out sth for ebay. Searing instant pain, me recoiling - back in kitchen see hand and arm increasing in red, hard swelling, fiercely hot and some shade of dulled blue appearing too.
Can see no marks, but something's happened. Over the next few days have strange things going on, very strange! Eventually went to surgery, seen at once, even though it's not as bad as it was. Ring is causing finger to atrophy, they say, so must be cut off. Since then, back and forth a few times, also jabbed for heart protection. Adder or spider they say, explains lack of sound and no sign of anything on subsequent looks in crate. 2 puncture marks now show.
Prob. not a pleasure, but......so, more apt:

    1. Couldn't miss auction for Isle of Bute friend and had fine time, securing desired Lots well. Sent SD from village PO this evening - hope she'll be pleased, some good jewellery and a couple of quirky cheapies for me[French pilgrim gourd
flask, early 18th C inscribed horn beakers, strange, good silver/horn knife-rests, very low end for this venue, but they still have to earn their living, so will be taken to France]
    2. Met some long-ago Auction acquaintances and had in my bag, by chance, Saturday's Grauniad, with lovely article[Work Section, if you want to look it up]about Mr Benney, supreme silversmith, which was perfect to pass to V, who wants new fine cases for some good works he's been buying for zilch, as so many 'crass barbarians'[his words]are buying up fine pieces, melting them down for the gold and slinging the beautiful innards. It is true, so much that is exquisite craftsmanship is being furnaced atm. V, who has much money and I, who have none, always did enjoy mutual chat and company at auctions...even though his asking if he might sit alongside caused me to miss a Lot I was interested to follow.........
    2. Gave h/m Mint Jelly, wasn't sure why, to R[long known auctioneer, good and kind man]. He was ecstatic and rushed to J and other J. saying 'Just what I wanted last night, didn't I say?' then explaining they go through it at such a rate, have it with everything potato-y and meat ditto. This is a rather old School, old-fashioned[but modern ways], country house aura auction. Haven't been for several years. It's held in a place my mother{I'm an NZer]always wanted to visit. In England, I'm witihin 10 miles of it and think of this whenever I'm there.
    3. Finding Lot xxx 'blah blah.......and four other various fine stone, marked gold 14K,18C,22C, and other yellow metal brooches'[5]est.£100-150, actually comprises 6 excellent pieces and came in @ £95. I know the 3 tiny sculpted coral flowerheads are in tiptop 22C, exquisite pinpoint matel! worked. Did quite a bit of research last night and they're all v.v.v.g. One pin to replace. Thrilling result.
    4. Enjoying some silly food at odd times without guilt, I who am usually so fierce re: diet/r!gime/. Had sudden yearning and quickly zapped some softening apples, sultanas, defrosted Finest nectarines[were 19p], 10p reduced Organic pears[all Mr T] with some h/m elderflower cordial in m/w. I am not really an icecream eater, but have been eating this divine concoction hot over some Freebie Mr T Cornish icecream. It is ootw and is staving choc craving most successfully.
    5. Rang Mr T about girl being unable to activate the 5p off per litre tillspit when I put 10 careful litres in after Auction. She cut in, saying 'Alright if I send you a £5 Money Card?' I told her that it was only 50p discount that was due, but she would have none of it. Nice post to anticipate and praise to Mr T.
    6. Enjoying The Goon Show right now[brilliant episode], 2nd time today - DAB 7 and loving Goodnight Mr Tom. How have I not known about this? Hunting for Michelle Magorian's other titles now.
7.i-player pleasures of Spooks, Grand Tour, James May to try to remember to catch up on, but started a cracking John Harvey book @ silly clocks[haven't read him before]. Much very nearby local precision, unusual for round here.
8.Thinking of Caterina earlier this week, when Woman's Hour had a piece on 'doula'-ing.
9.A beautiful teal/emerald butterfly was fluttering about at Auction in morning session, battering itself sans cesse against show ring windows. Couldn't bear it, so safely taken out into a stable - stands a better chance of going into winter eclipse in there. Rather remarkably, Auction was paused while this took place. There were kindly smiles.
10.Two more butterflies this week - one on Monday in raspberries, one this afternoon near baytree as I enclosed note for P>Bute...at which point Big Boy also arrived with loud complaint and much screeching. Managed to get photo of him drinking water, which I've printed out for bookmark to P with title I hope she likes<Poundland: Peter Hill's 'Stargazing' picked up last week. They often have some very decent titles.
9.Haven't managed any ebaying this week, but won't beat self up about it, shall set to tomorrow. Posted 5 ebay parcels though - Sweden>Australia and points between. It is an amazing thing.
10.Seem to be through first hoop for the volunteering I want to be part of.
11.Caught up with L, for whom I'd had concern - offloaded some fun freebs/just acquired Finest salads[down to 14p], silly goodies and naughty choc. We had a happy chat; she is recovering[in various ways]and I learn she, too, has always been a hunter /gatherer of disregarded trifles. This fine trait of character, just call it a passion, an addiction, having 'the eye', [all detractors will have been supplying THEIR less glorious words for it]never dies, though sometimes spends long times underground, where it quietly matures, like fine wine. 'It's like riding a bike' is the fit and proper clich! here. Had a wonderful time[over 2 hours]happily sharing her finds and hearing how/when/where/on each and every one...and loved each and every one. can't have too much of this and it's a reliet to know one other same is not far away. It's somehow better for being not known 'til now.
    - Have gone on for so long I have to scroll back to see what number I'm at.
    12. Dental check tomorrow; new glasses may be ready [they broke last week, day before optician's appt-felicitous coincidence]. £19 paid for non-Budget frame @ Budget Frame price. This optician's swift diagnosis saved my left-eye sight 3 years ago when I'd thought something was wrong as I drove back from France. Had just wandered in, worried to be a nuisance. He rang Dr and Addenbrooke's and I was there witihin the hour, being assessed for laser help - luckily suitable - and continued over following 2years. Gifted dentist Anna has finally taken away my fears by her remarkable pain-free skills - free NHS. Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou.
To which add that the unexpected Winter Fuel £250 is actually there to be seen in my Bank online.
    ############
Really must stop - feeling a bit peckish....there's some fruit concoction left.

I hope some new lurkers are knowing how welcome they are here.

    Toodle-pip.

icon1.gifnewbie with a glass of wine for bravery...
I have to confess and it is my first ever post?! Have been a silent watcher of the forums for a while now but had to reply to this one…

Firstly, thanks to all for baring their souls and making me laugh so much! Here goes…

    1) on one of the first pages of this thread there was a mention of pregnated cheese. I had a blissful 2 minutes of daydreaming about what it could be when I realised I had misread it and it was actually pregrated cheese…
    2) the reason I misread it was because I need my glasses to read the screen and I can’t find them – well, if I am honest I haven’t looked but I have no idea where they could be
    3) the dining room table is covered in junk and paperwork - so much so that even my 6 cats are weary of jumping up there as the other day one landed wrong and did a kind of paper surf halfway across it which scared him (I have a 5 ft long dining table)
    4) I haven’t cleaned the bathroom for nearly a month but I did throw some bleach into the toilet earlier today
    5) Outside my back door is a doormat which is actually growing plants, and a wet soggy tartan sock doing the same. In my defence I have no idea where the sock came from other than one of my cats brought it home one day (honest, but its an improvement to last summer when he took a wet thong from my washing machine and took it out to play in the car park out the back – I swear!)
    6) My fruit basket has 1 black banana, 2 brown bananas and 2 dry Satsuma’s (I threw out the green banana the other day when I realised that no matter how much I wanted it, the bananas were just never going to turn the same shade of brown to make banana bread all at the same time)
    7) A friend gave me a second sofa to help with my lack of seating (I have 6 cats) and it has just turned into a storage for clean washing waiting to be put away… and I am ashamed to admit that it bothers neither me or the cats as they happily sleep on it whether it is free space or not.

    I think that’s enough for a newbie…

    Evening all.

My five simple pleasures for Thursday:

    1. Waking up early and getting some focused work done while still in bed then going back to sleep again for a bit. My hottie was still nice and warm.

    2. Being woken up again by DS2 bringing me a cuppa. :D

    3. HM soup for lunch and supper that had been made yesterday just needed heating again. Easy food today.

    4. Cancelling going to sports club tonight so unexpected evening in.

    5. Discovering that we still had some of the very nice hot chocolate still left in the cupboard - so am having a cup now.

    Sweet dreams

  • 1) Following the success of other posters on this thread, I got the washing line out again (it had been put away in the Big Autumn Garden Tidy) and got 3 1/2 loads dry outside for free.
    2) Using the stove this evening for heating. Most of the fuel came from garden cuttings so it has been a No Central Heating Day.
    3) Hugh FW on tv, cooking and eating whatever comes to hand.
    4) Apple cake, by Keith Floyd. Found the recipe in my box and it turned out lovely, even with gluten free flour.
