Evening all
Those socks are fantastic, &. Made me feel very inspired to get the sock knitting out again. Thanks for that link.
Five pleasures for today:
1. Phone call from my dad to say how much he'd enjoyed yesterday. He was very happy to see us and I think we got the prezzies spot on and not OTT.
2. Fish baked with rosemary from the garden, spuds and veg/salad for supper tonight. I think it's one of my favourite meals.
3. Had fun going hatchet shopping  to get something with which to chop the kindling. I did enjoy swinging it purposefully as I walked through the shop to pay.
4. And, on a less practical note, this year I have treated us to a couple of little strings of cheap battery operated fairy lights to put in our front window over Christmas. I thought about getting some last year but they were all sold out by the time I'd got round to it. This year I'm ahead of myself and they arrived in the post this morning.
5. Reserved ebook and audio book arrived today.
Sweet dreams

1. Up at silly o'clock, why is it that when I don't have to get up I wake up early? Probably for the same reason the bread always falls butter side down... However I tightened the toilet seat which was becoming like a roller coaster ride, tightened the flush handle which was so loose it was pointing to the floor, replaced all the upstairs door handle trims and put up the hooks back on the bathroom door so my dressing down (as DD used to call it) can be hung up again. And all before 8.30am
2. made a cottage pie, cauli cheese, rice pudding, fruit crumble, scones and wm rolls. Don't want my 2 1/2 visitors going hungry tomorrow!
3. Postie brought me a letter from that sm whose doors I haven't darkened for ages, telling me I have £14.50 worth of coupons to spend in their store. I'll give that to DS's OH toward the Christmas shopping.
4. He also brought me a letter telling me I've been overcharged on a dd which will be amended and I'm getting a refund of £92. Thank you!
5. nsd/npd and even a nhd (no heating day) as it's been so mild
Sweet dreams0 -
It's now a blessedly cool 22o having just dropped from 34o about half an hour ago, all windows and doors opened to let cool air in the house, was a very uncomfy 31o overnight.
Well back to the land of work today , it was okay , I supposehad no notion of going back and I knew it would be very warm in that kitchen which it most certainly was.
Working with nice girls....still time for a laugh and joke even when we are busy.
OH took the train to meet me after work. We had planned on going out for lunch but when I came home I discovered the dog had chewed my $175 saved up for orthopaedic sandals ! I was not very happy. Anyway, we took them to a cobbler who has stitched an extra bit on and they will live to see another day.....can't say the same for the dog!
I, then went for a back massage. One day back at work and back sore again, I've had a few twinges through the week but have only worn my sandals all week. Anyway, half an hour of deep, ow, ow, ooh, aaaargh...(silently I think) and I was done!
I'm now going to sit and read my library book for a while before I think about dinner
Have a good weekend0 -
Had a good week
1. Went to rugby yesterday and we won - friends came with us and so had a good catch up with them before and after the match. The match was poor but company good and I was warm enough.
2. After a terrible journey home from work one day I was listened to and now no longer have to take others a couple of times a month. It adds about 20 - 30 minutes to my journey.
3. Met a friend for lunch yesterday which was lovely and she gave me a lift to the station.
4. Flowers - that cheer me up.
5. John Lewis advert - aaaah.
6. Watching a blackbird eating from the berries from my pyracanthus and also great tits and blue tits eating berries from neighbours tree.
7. Afew NSD this week.
8. Enjoying having a coffee before I go into the garden.0 -
Pleasures for yesterday (Friday).
1) Whizzed to Sainsburys to buy all the ingredients for the cookery lesson bigger son had forgotten about.
2) Took ingredients to school.
3) He collected ingredients from office and took them to the fridge in the cookery room to discover that he doesn't have cookery until next Wednesday. :-/ The teacher checked all the best before dates (he'll be making fajitas) and the stuff can stay in the fridge as long as he takes fresh chicken fillets.
4) Had eyebrows threaded - aargh.
5) Lovely mince pie and hot chocolate in a caf!.
6) Started getting stocking fillers - bike bells, trouser leg clip things, tiny solar powered cars etc.
7) Tasty tea of spag bol then cherry pie and custard.
8) Bingo in the village hall. Bigger son won curry, rice and chicken. Then I won lots of fruit. Another win - they didn't want to give us more fruit so we won 2 small torches! Final win - 4 tiny tapas bowls and a jar of olives. :-D
9) Enjoyed watching Gogglebox.0 -
Frith - what a bonanza win at bingo!
Busy day at school yesterday, but my bake off group enjoyed their gingerbread men. It's a new group of children and I ensured that we didn't weigh out any flour until I'd established that they knew it comes from wheat.
My pleasures for the last couple of day.
1) Local NFU (National Farmers' Union) dinner last night. My brother had a stint as the branch chairman a couple of years ago, so takes a table at the dinner. Fantastic after dinner speaker - a farmer's daughter from Derbyshire called Lydia Slack. Truly hilarious!
2) Took my car to a garage to have its brakes looked at, following an advisory notice on the MOT. They offer a free brake check, then obviously advise on any work which needs doing. Amazingly they said that no *actual* work needs doing immediately. They had looked at it thoroughly for 2.5hrs with a cost of zilch! They pointed out what had been the advisory on the MOT and gave their advice. We use this garage when we need stuff doing, so I know I can trust them. I trust very few garages...
3) HM Spaghetti bolognese for supper from the freezer.
4) DH took me for lunch at a pub. Super glamorous jacket potatoes! We only wanted a light lunch, but it was hard to find the light lunch on the menu amongst all the burgers, chips etc.
5) Managed to avert a crisis. I meet up with my uni housemates for a Christmas meal each year. One friend always books the restaurant but this year she'd plumped for one which was a teensy bit (read: a lot/loads) overpriced. Suggested that one friend struggles with money a little and although the restaurant looked amazing, I felt she might have an issue (VERY true). Thankfully, the restaurant booking friend has changed the venue to a place which is a little more in line with what I was thinking. ie affordable for all!
Right, I need to keep on planning for next week at school.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -
A pleasant day , not too warm , just about right at 22o. New(ish) colleague had not closed the kitchen window last night, which is a big no no....however, it was lovely and cool which was very pleasant!
We were not too busy, just about the right level!
OH took the train to meet me and then we dropped a colleague off on way home. Quick change and then out for brunch/ lunch/ tea of potato wedges and a carrot cake!
Pup went to puppy school today .....may he learn to be a good boy soon!
Going to start my 'operation 18th birthday party list' ....I think it's going to be a big to do list! Yet, I shall take so much pleasure ticking things off it !
Happy Sunday one and all , marmite hope all is well with you and tealady too!0 -
1. Managed to do some more in the garden.
2. Made soup and had it for tea with sandwiches and enough left over for lunches next week.
3. Went shopping for DS2 21st present amd met friend who I hadn't seen in a couple of years. It was fantastic to meet and have a chat with her and her other half.
4. Worked out what I need to do for christmas and not quite as bad as I thought.
5.Generally a good day.0 -
Morning all - AWOL again
Thanks all for comments on poppy pics - I am no photographer, but my trusty camera phone seemed to do a decent job - even on night exposure!
Greywitch - you just can't beat a bacon sandwich. White bread, real butter - i have given up wheat 90% of the time. Some of that other 10% is for the occasional bacon sandwich
PK - Sorry about your commuting woes. Well done on the clementine restraint and there's nowt wrong with chips occasionally. I too received a Joe Brown's catalogue, thumbing through it chanting "I do not need more clothes" helped a littleI will wait for the sales - there are often good bargains to be had
Vicky - Good to find lost gloves. The pockets of coats not worn for a while always reveal something don't they - where you were, what you ate, minging tissues :rotfl:
Broomstick - I want a woodburnerNo room here but is an essential when we move to our forever house. Coincidence re the PM
Like minds... Glad dad enjoyed his birthday
Mhags - 22 degrees is my favourite temperature - not to be seen for a while here, I fear. Sorry back to work knackered the back - hopefully it will adjust
BoP - We had a food waste collection and it worked very well. They have now stopped that and we have to go back to putting it in the general rubbish (garden waste is composted, "they" decided it is too expensive to do the food - takes longer / different equipment or summat). Any hoo it seems wrong to just throw (i don't waste much either but there are arisings at the best of times) it all gets burned for energy so they say
Frith - good bingo haul. Hoping the bathroom gets sorted soon. Sons and homework - i feel your pain
Chicken - RIP hen. Well done on the half days - from someone who reluctantly upped theirs last year. However having a flexible work patterned job (out of term time anyway) means that i didn't work much over the summer  I cut OH's hair, I did a "whoops - nothing" once! he never noticed the chunk I took out, also behind his ear :rotfl:
Sparrer - hope the chest infection has now left. well done on the 9p shop - I don't get so many bargains these days. Obviously not timing it right.:(
CCP - Don't fall for the flattery trick - used often on the children "oh, could you lay the table for mummy - you do it so beautifully". Unfortunately they get wise by the time they are about 10 :rotfl:
Ampersand - As a trip to DD involves travelling from Fenchurch st or Liverpool St stations, i am becoming more familiar with the area around Spits. Isn't it lovely round there? I intend to investigate further one of these days.. the bedcover sounds divine. I will forgive you your strangely misguided hatred of BCI feel his tongue can sometimes run away with him. I am sounding like more of an obsessed cumberb!tch with every sentence - i will cease now
DforV - sublime post yet again. Love "vigorously worded" gave them a b0ll0ck!ng :rotfl:
Skint - good to have a gas and leccy refund - never seems to happen for us - though we don't pay by DD, that might be why
McCulloch - Isn't FB great for that? Some folks take it far too seriously of course, but I treat it like a "fag break" and a source of nonsense. Had a very satisfying rant last night about the C0co colo lorry - people get so excited, it's a chuffing lorry FGS and "The holidays" are long behind us and christmas still seven weeks away - you get the drift
Villagelife - Can't beat flowers for cheeriness - and the birds of course
Pleasures for last few days
1. Helped out a "new dad" work colleague. I could see he was struggling and gave him an opening if he wanted to talk. Shared with him some of what I went through after having DD - some PND but also the sheer shock of it all, the sheer bloody hard work and responsibility. Hopefully i helped. YOu never get told the rotten bits, just that you are overwhelmed with love - i was overwhelmed with fear more than anything and he needed to know that. It seems to be a big "no no" to admit anything other than joy, making it all the harder for those who struggle, of course.
2. Lovely walks again to and from work. I seem to have totally swung from avoiding at all costs to resenting when i need to drive. Our car has done 100 miles in 2 and a half weeks - it used to do that in 2 and a half days :T. Remind me of this in January :rotfl:
3. Having to fill in for a suspended colleague (another story, but something it seems blown out of all proportion and verging on an attempt at "constructive dismissal") and coping well with "off the cuff" lectures. Often work better. Absence of colleague means that I am taking a group of masters students to London for two days - trip round the olympic park and to Battersea power station building site.
4. Day out on the canals with the inlaws yesterday. They have been holidaying for a week and coming through our town - so we bussed out to join them, spent day "messing around on the er canal"bus and train home. Lovely day despite early rain, ending in boozy dinner at pub (homemade steak and ale pie) and I don't have a hangover. Many laughs to be had :T
5. Plumber came to measure up for new bathroom - will cost many ££££ but desperately needs doing. Involved breaking out some fittings to check drainage etc so we have to do it now.
Have a lovely day all - I need to catch up on "stuff", force the teenager to do his homework, and then watch him play football - unless it rains when OH will have to go :rotfl:I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
villagelife - I might get some soup out of the freezer for my lunch, now you've mentioned it.
Sparrer - I'm impressed with the bathroom adjustments!
Pleasures for yesterday (Saturday).
1) A bit of a lie in.
2) Sons at their father's so I took the opportunity to start printing off dad's family tree (must be completed by his birthday....) It can't all be printed off together, not even on sheets stuck together, as there are so many branches and rows of siblings. The "major players" and recent relations have their own pages of notes and I've printed out the war service records of those who fought in WWI. The trouble is, I can't think how to piece it all together so it makes sense! One branch of the family goes back to Ethelred the Unready, so that tree on its own is 10 A4 sheets long!
3) Went swimming with my brother.
4) Pie and chips from the van for tea.
5) Really enjoyed watching Dr Who. When sons are here, I must use it as a time to get things done (while they are sitting quietly) but without them I didn't miss a second!
6) Nice and warm in front of the stove.0
