Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
I had a rather disappointing day today - I went to put up the office Xmas tree, as I do every year, and the box of decorations had vanished - the victim of over-zealous tidying up rather than theft, we think, but still very sad as there were some lovely old decorations in there. :( On the plus side, I suppose, it means I get to go and buy some more tomorrow. :undecided

    1) Quiet day at work again - every time I had a spare moment I went off to do some more haggis hunting, which is oddly addictive!

    2) Took a colleague's advice and went for lunch 10 minutes early to go to the post office, which meant I only had to queue for five minutes rather than the 20 or so it was taking by the time I left.

    3) Gorgeous sunset, with the sky looking like it had been set on fire.

    4) Beef burgers for dinner.

    5) Will shortly be curling up with a glass of wine leftover from the weekend, my advent candle, and snooker on TV - very wintery. :)
Back after a very long break!
  • Pleasures for today

    1. non work day and had a lie in
    2. starting to feel human again, just in time to go to work tomorrow :(
    3. felt well enough to wash kitchen floor, now gleaming thanks to good ol' stardrops
    3. got my £30 cashback into the bank from switch and fixing gas/electric back in September
    4. co-op divi money off coupons arrived - £7 this year as I was with them for dual fuel. Will probably use this for a bit extra to put in DS's stocking

PK ((hugs)) its really difficult when loved ones don't know who you are, I went through this with my gran for several years god bless her. Has Mr PK's ex recently had a relationship breakdown or something similar to trigger her weird behaviour?

mhags well done to your DS on his exam results !

Frith ... hope your chimney can be fixed in time for santa !

VJsmum - why are you yodelling? I can hear you fine... Weird gifts are mostly just wildly inappropriate (eg schoolboy given a book by a girl who got shot for going to school!) Quilting/patching is fun!
Frith - chimney sweepeing inside & out? Now there's a whole new level of thorough!
mhagster - slippers as an advent calendar? <bewildered>
DD - I love things that jingle, (except my purse when it's down to coppers) - I now acquire bells rather than baubles each year! (Made a collar of mixed bells & baubles for smallest's almost-permanently-attached toy Years Ago - happy christmas being able to locate by the gentle jingling!)
lovefullshelves - I got into murder when I had pneumonia as a child & read the library dry of Enid Blyton... Did You Get The Bath?!
BoP - good to hear you back & on fine form!
CCP - missing decorations? That is such a kicker - I had some glass angels I put up at work as the lads weren't safe with glass - they're somewhere, but I've not seen them in years. Could you ask other staff to being in one bauble each? So it's a bit more 'their tree'? Or is having to go & buy some more as much part of the fun?! Glass of wine & Advent candle sounds wonderful!

Today's pleasures are a slightly mixed bag.
Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" on the radio - I do love that song!

Brave new world *entirely* artificially lit - street lights, car lights, shop signs - not a wisp of the yellow thing or even hint of same.

Back from festive good intentions & now checking out bookshop exchange policies re: Christmas gifts. No receipts, so it's all in the goodwill. So far, fun!

Family language grew a new word - the what-a-lot-of-pockets thing you drop into a handbag now known as an "Alice". Mispronounced from 'alles in ordnung' - which I'm told is German for 'everything is tidy' & roughly means 'clean, bright, lightly oiled & Ready For Inspection'... Which as a gift from me is so ironic I'd need new words as I'm only ever approaching that organised when programming machine code. (Anyone else have 'family' words?!)

Just seen a recently-deceased colleague's business card - "seeker of peace" ("tigers castrated, v!rgins enlightened, bars drunk dry" amongst options on offer.) He didn't have a long retirement (months!) but the card is a wonderful testament to his humour.

Illicit treat: sent first Advent Photo to Gran, who is tickled.

Big hugs to all who need them, health & hair emerging in new & stunning lines & may all meter reads be modest!

    Good evening everyone! :hello:

I was away at the weekend :j :j DH and I went to Brussels, using our Avios points! Bonus! It was absolutely lovely with the Christmas market being in full swing. There were loads of stalls and it was a lovely atmosphere.

So, my 5 for today are:

    1) Stuck to my list when supermarket shopping! This is almost a first!

    2) Trying to find a Christmas recipe for a cake for the next meeting of cake club next Monday. The theme is Christmas or ingredients beginning with a "c". I'm trying to decide between either this or this. Hmmmm.....

    3) Used up a few of my toiletries for the challenge. Need to try harder, but without wasting any items!

    4) Managed to eat some of my Belgian chocs. Mmmmm, they are DIVINE! (not OS, but thought I'd better brag!)

    5) Realised that our freezer still has some items in, thank goodness. Not as desperate as I first thought this morning.

    Night all

Ooo, Brussels, VickyA. I went to Bruges but a good while ago now. And saw the Christmas market there.

CCP - I've found Sainsburys very good for decorations this year.

DfV - now got "God Only Knows" stuck on my mind which is irritating as I only know 2 lines!

    Pleasures for today:

    1) Not a bad sleep.

    2) Sons had a good day at school. Smaller son decided to have a school dinner for the first time (rather than HM lunch). They had a special fish and chip lunch last Friday so he knows he can queue up and point to what he wants now so is happy to try again tomorrow too!

    3) Phoned lots of people re chimney repairs and got completely conflicting opinions and quotations ranging from £80 to £600 (really!)

    4) Had a look at our local 1930's cinema website. I knew there was something going on on the 23rd December... turns out it is a children's party (starting 2pm) and they get to make a Christmas gift. Then you watch Muppet's Christmas Carol! (They've never seen it). So I went to book the tickets and they're FREE!

    5) Wrote the remaining Christmas cards, did the envelopes, put the stamps on. Just got to get sons to add their signatures.

    6) Popped to Sainsburys.

    7) Tea was quite nice. Cooked some Kale, carrots and leeks in stock. Put in a pyrex bowl with a bit of crème fraiche topped with crumble with walnuts then grated cheese. Baked in the oven.

    8) Enjoyed watching the Choir but one of the sopranos was flat! I kept shouting at Gareth every time (through the telly) but he didn't notice. One of the judges did.

    9) Going to bed now as smaller son is popping downstairs to see me every 5 minutes anyway and shall listen to I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

Evening all. Things have been getting out of hand in terms of busyness and I was too tired to post yesterday.

Anyway, here's my five pleasures for Monday:

    1. Sweet phone call from my mum to say that she and my dad have decided to give me an extra present at Christmas to say thank you for all my support this year because they have had a really tough time of it in all kinds of ways and I stepped in to support. It is/was a no-brainer for me, and has been such a pleasure, but I really appreciated the feelings behind her gratitude.:)

    2. NSD and NPD. I didn't leave the house (I even got so distracted with work that I forgot to put the washing out on the line ). It was therefore also a NFAD (no fresh air day). :rotfl: I have stayed warm though - a very great pleasure since I'm feeling the cold rather a lot. Need to dig out the thermals.:D

    3. Big bowl of lentil and veg soup with cheese for lunch.

    4. Did a longish motorway drive home yesterday by myself - it's really rare for me to be in the car on my own for any distance - so I took the opportunity to sing lots on the way... loudly. :D

    5. Sorted out DS1's Xmas present online.

    Sweet dreams
    B x

... disappeared to watch Gareth and the flat soprano - thanks Frith

I lost a post again, it must be catching...
So a quick collection and apologies for not commenting on all your pleasures, but gosh, I enjoy reading them.

    1. New B*sch washing machine, not the slightest bit OS but the amount we will save on having the tumble dryer and heating on for much shorter periods is. :money: Realised when two woollen jumpers came out of an 800 rpm spin much drier than usual that the old machine must have been doing no more than 400 rpm, towels at 1400 rpm astonishingly light.

    2. Pleasure 2 related to B*sch washing machine. Got told on getting the insurance against accidental damage for the said washing machine that the call out charge for my insured cooker is £199 when insurance is not held.
The cooker is a H*tpoint, a most unreliable make, but I wanted to support local businesses, and that was the only suitable one, hey ho. I've already claimed on the insurance and saved myself c. £250
It shorted out last year when a pan of mushy peas boiled over onto the ceramic hob 2 months outside the guarantee. Repair guy told me it wasn't the water that did the damage but the starch. I now 'boil' just about everything in the micro, apart from pasta. I have not eaten mushy peas since.
To add insult to injury, they were vile.

    3. Unbelievably, what I was planning on buying Dr C. for Christmas -a car battery charger - came up on Amazon Vine. I was using Opera as my browser, which is significantly faster, and I nabbed it.
This sort of thing never happens usually, I miss out to those with faster fingers and speedy PCs.

    4. I have been given some extra work writing Maths initial assessment questions, did a favour for a friend and colleague in the summer and she passed on my name. I won't be paid for months, but I will be paid eventually!

    5. Planning on trying the recipe for vegetarian haggis. After the messy success of the salmon and pea fishcakes, this looks less messy.
Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.

Morning all, waiting for the carpet fitters. Supposed to be on a course at 11 - not sure i'm going to make it.

Some peeps been missing for a few days - Kittikins? Chicken?

DD - good idea, holy mackerel - love it :D
LFS - hope you are dressingless and bathed
BoP - the presents is one reason we don't "do" cats - the other is the food
CCP - good timing re post office. Candle and wine sound nice - snooker, not so much :p Had a belly full growing up, pot black every Friday night after guides. "For those watching in black and white - it's just behind the pink" :rotfl:
Skint - s*ds law eh, feeling better in time to go back to work. I am expecting to be ill in a couple of weeks, "when I have time to"
DforV - we have loads of family words "dibs" (peas), "blibblies" (slippers), "delly, poot and ding a ling" (jelly, fruit and ice cream) - we are a strange lot.
Vicky - glad you had a nice time in Brussels. the first cake looks nicer. How about cherry and coconut?
Frith - great going with the cinema. I have a feeling we've been to your town and cinema with the caravan before now. Good progress with son and school dinner
Broomstick - it's nice to be appreciated. Singing loudly in the car is a great thing to do :D
McCulloch - we have B*sch stuff - it is worth every penny
Mhagster - well done your DS, rhubarb ice cream sounds lush

    So yesterdays pleasures

    1. walked into town with wally the trolley to start the Christmas shopping.
    2. got quite a lot of nice bits for lucky dips and stuff to accompany vouchers
    3. lunch in emaness :)
    4. walked from town to emaness, ours is not a pretty town but it is rather ancient and there are some very lovely bits to it. It isn't my home town, being a Maid of Kent, but it is my kids' and it was lovely to walk through the park and past the castle and by the river to the rather horrid retail park. Still it is good to appreciate the nice bits.
    5. Bed with my new hot water bottle :T

Still no carpet - have a nice day all.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
