    3. Managed to control my temper in an almost daily occouring situation where i lose it- have developed a way of recognizing the signs and stopping my reaction before it happens! And i laughed instead today:rotfl::T

    4. I love my fiance so much - just needed to share that

5.Have only justgot home from work but i have my oh, my puppy and a hot chocolate- all on same 2seater sofa- bliss
    :silenced:
I think tabskitten is a crying, walking, sleeping, talking, living troll
  • Evening all
sorry I haven't been around but we've had a very busy half term.
Firstly, I haven't caught up on all your posts yet but had to say CATERINA - congrats on your great news, that's brill.
    Here's my pleasures.
    1. Can you remember me saying I'd been crying about some news I'd had from DS school. Well in a nutshell the school nurse phoned out of the blue and asked if we needed some support for my boys DYSPRAXIA, I replied, erm I wasn't aware he had it ????? Was unable to speak to his teacher as she was ill. I have cried and worried about thisall half term. Finally got to speak to teacher today. The nurse has totally got the wrong end of the stick and he's fine - I'm bloody mad but SO SO SO relieved.
    2. Had a fab half term, really lovely.
    3. DS came out of school and gave me a huge hug in the playground :)
    4. I've started making earrings !!
    5. it's snowing this evening and looks lovely.

Good evening everybody - what a teeth-chatteringly cold day it's been today.

Caterina - house elf is so right - you always seem to be going somewhere interesting/doing something unusual/trying a new venture - good for you and OH :j. That little cafe sounds such an oasis of delight in a busy world.
newlywed - mmmmm potato scones and bubble'n'squeak . Hope you and OH enjoy your trip to the wedding .
Carolynita - wow another one with a male on the horizon - definitely a hint of spring in the air ;). Good Luck with your house viewing on Thursday :) and wd on your ebaying :T.
nuttybabe - wd on being 'sensible' in Tesco and wtg on OH's payrise :j.
ACEY - Oh well, it was only a matter of time before he backed himself into a corner with his outrageous behaviour :j:j:j - but I'm so sorry for your boys' sakes that it's come to this. Obviously they love their Daddy and will find it all a bit difficult - let's hope he sees sense and modifies his attitude. Unfortunately you're the one who's going to have to explain to the boys why they're not seeing Daddy at least for the time being - good luck and well done on sticking to your guns and doing everything for the best where your boys are concerned. Will he be allowed phone contact? If so, I'd be careful about what he says on the phone - would be good if you could put him on speaker phone so you can hear his part of any conversation.
RAS - Very interesting to get the view of a similar situation from a 'child's eye perspective' - I well remember going through similar with my OH in reverse. My 3 children were with HIM and he did all he could to discredit ME - it didn't work and they all eventually left him to come and live with me in my 1-bedroom flat. Actually asked me to have them in the school holidays and THEN reported me to the Housing Office for being over-crowded in an attempt to get me evicted from my home and get me sacked  - my home went with my job.
GirlySquare - wd on 'maintaining the loop' after the conference ;). Good Luck for Thursday for the meeting - make sure that you all know exactly what your mum wants to happen and that you all stick together. Will step-dad be there as well?
bella - very productive day :j - jam making, crocheting/finishing off your blanket, Orange Spice Cake, Minty Lamb Rissoles AND Tapioca Pudding - all that puts 'Mrs Bridges' right in the shade :T.
Ladyhawk - great news about the prospect of a new job - sounds like a good idea to speak to your current employers and let them know that you're feeling undervalued and that you have the opportunity to move on - it may just spur them into action with your pay and conditions. Wd on the ebaying :j.
Tealady - Hope you manage to ward off the germs - you can do without a head%20cold.gif so best make it a double ;).
savingforoz - I do the same as you where Council Tax is concerned - my extra is also paying off my holiday for May. Should be finished next month and then April will pay for the National Express Tickets. Not going anything like as far as you're going, but it's our own idea of heaven. Good Luck with your story - coming along very quickly now that the creative juices are flowing again. You'll have to make lots of notes on your travels - has to be at least a couple of stories in there somewhere - need to pay for the next trip as soon as you can .
katholicos - wd on your foodie stuff today and hope you enjoy your Mystery Meal ;).
house elf - so pleased you liked the Eeyore :). Wd on having a better day, finishing work early and getting lots of bargains in Mr M's :j. Fingers crossed that the dog stays downstairs tonight ;).
tabskitten - wd you on recognising the situation of 'losing it' BEFORE it's too late and countering it with laughter :T.
jollymummy - ooooo that must have been a shock to you - so pleased it turned out differently. Wd on having such a lovely, and busy, half-term. wtg on the earring making :T - I'm addicted to earrings and I think my dgd1 is following in my footsteps - she certainly has the same taste as I do - not at all like her mother who is sooooooo 'conservative' in her choice.

Mine for the last couple of days:

    1. Lovely quiet day on Sunday after all the chaos of Saturday.

    2. The Turkey Casserole was very delcious for Sunday evening meal. Left-overs got frozen and will top a jacket potato for another meal.

    3. Completely finished my Lily of the Valley bookmark including the backing felt and the tassle - so pleased with it. Now I need to remember to use the darn thing ;).

    4. Visit from DS2 with dgs3 at 9.30am Monday morning . g/f was in bed after being on nights and he needed to get dgs3 out of the house to let her sleep properly. Ran riot in here for about 20mins and then got 'plopped' into the travel cot and stuck in front of CBeebies for the remainder of the time they were here. Lovely to see them both though - DS2 managed to make his way through nearly half of a Banana and Walnut Loaf - greedy bgr!

    5. Whoopsied shop-bought pizza for tea on Monday (not a very regular treat in this house) - tasted all the better for being a bargain :j.

    6. More of my family tree sorted. OH found some very old (Victorian) photos of the American part of our family stashed in a box in HIS flat, and I managed to add all the necessary details. Keep uncovering people I've never heard of before AND some I'd long forgotten about. One lady who has struck a chord with me is 'Florence Nevada Thompson' (an aunt of my grandad) who married 'Thomas Stirrup Mustard' in 1899 - I'd love to know the story behind their names . The saddest thing I keep finding, is all these big families and then realising that, from one census to the next, children disappear from the records and I have to search death records for them. Thank God for our NHS and all who work in it.

    7. Roast chicken dinner for us this evening, with mash pots, carrots/parsnips, green beans, stuffing and gravy. Made a nice midweek change and lots of chicken left for other meals. I can see a Roast Chicken Dinner Pie getting made and frozen .

That's me about done and up-to-date for this evening. Hope everyboyd manages to keep their germs at bay and has a good night's sleep. Nitey nite all - love Ollie xxx

Ollie you are such a special person, always picking up and commenting on everyone :) I tried just now and lost track :(
I remembered Acey and think she is being very strong, and its not that anyone else isnt, just that I am crap at remembering :(

I had a bad day can I break with tradition and list my 5 bad ones then try and make good ones... well I am going to!
    bad...
    1) tried to replant the seeds I planted 4 weeks ago that desperately need it (first time i ever grew anything) but, its been so cold and the new compost has been stored outside, and was frozen.. even hot water wasnt helping, so my seedlings are likely to die through over crowding i fear.
    2) one of my 2 microwaves ate itself with a weird noise, and a new one is £300. We are just getting on top of things and then something else comes along. Getting an engineer out, but its likely that will cost me £100 + parts if its fixable. Luckily we cook from scratch but soup and desserts are going to be harder work.
    3) got a really crap and unfair review on tripadvisor which caused yet another arguement. The people that come and rave about us never take time to comment, the one that comes once comments and taints the whole thing :( makes me feel like crap when I worked 80+hours a week, and we dont even turn a profit (we barely break even in 2.5 years) but its not about money, its about reputation, and we work so hard. I hate if people feel like they had a bad time here, and last week we were 2 staff down through this crappy cold bug, and we are so busy and breaking our necks. why cant the peopel that are happy comment too. I went out of my way for a couple of vegetarians that stayed 3 nights with us, to make sure that not only did they have our 3 menu options and our special option, but i did extra hours to make sure they had a different special option every day and also cooked a quorn meatloaf and veggie gravy for the sunday lunch... they didnt leave a comment but someone visiting once seems to have. We are suspicious that another local establishment is instigating reviews but cant prove it, tires me out, im almost done fighting the fight.
    4) its so cold, the loch is frozen over, really it is... its 7 miles long and has been freezing a little more each day, today it reached our banks. It looks beautiful, but its so cold it worries me about my girls (our new hens) getting cold. They are spending so much time inside the house as its so cold, and when they do come out they stand on one foot then the other. I know... instead of seeing the positive beauty, I am on a downer :( the hens are fine.
    5) ordered chinese tonight which i was looking forward to, in view of the fact it was a treat and we are paying, but after the OH, and live in staff ordered, I felt it was frivolous and expensive so didnt order what i wanted, simply said it was enough and I would eat leftovers as there would be plenty. I had some rice and ribs and prawn crackers I shared with my dog as he loves them. There is a whole portion thing of rice, chicken, beef and prawntoasts left... I ordered nothing, and it fed 4. why am i doing this.... it wasnt a treat to me, and it was over £30. I need a new life.

Ok. been away from keyboard (afk) had a cig and a brandy and want to try and salvage 5 good in the spirit of the thread.

    1) the hens make me laugh, they are so funny, even at 7am. (prior to getting them, there was one 7 o'clock per day and it wasnt in the morning!)
    2) the frozen loch looks amazing. a few weeks ago I asked if it had ever frozen and all the locals laughed and said it never would, who is laughing now hey! I have pics if you need proof!
    3) My car passed its MOT for the 3rd year in a row with no work, its about 13 years old now! hooray for japanese imported toyotas I say!
    4) the lady at the sewing / wine shop (where we buy our wine, his mom had a sewing shop and the 2 combined which is awesome for me!) sent OH home with a free crochet hook that wasnt in stock last week when i went in and bought half the shop, determined to learn crochet! ( havent had time to do more since my 23 thingys towards my lent scarf i promised on pinks thread) I thought it was wonderful she remembered since last week, and also sent it with our wine order and didnt charge me, although i will insist on paying her next week when i go for more ribbon for napkin rings.
    5) I read this thread. I know i'm in a fortunate position in so many ways, and in a crap one in so many other ways. But reading this thread even tho I dont always comment, lifts my spirits no matter what. Even when i feel peoples anguish and pain, i see the glow and the positivity and it fuels me to fight too.

Sorry for the negatives, guess I needed to vent, but I tried to balance with positives, hope thats ok,

Ollie good luck with the family tree, it's fun isn't it? My DD and DSis have gone back to 1630 but records were very sparse before then. A forefather was the first Governor of Boston, Mass, and his grandson a president of Harvard - that's where all our family's brains went :rotfl:. There's a little township in Mass with my family surname but no-one with our name is there now. Wonder if I go there they'll welcome me or run me out of town!
Megs mum I tend to eat too much when I get down then regret it and am like a whirling dervish for a while. I so admire people who are disciplined and take any regular exercise.
Carolyntia I'm not going to let the little oiks get me down. DS has sent some details so soon I can watch all the moggies outside on my television! Provided nothing more happens between now and next week I shall go on my long weekend away, they aren't going to intimidate me that much. Keeping everything x'd for a quiet time from now on
ACEY you're amazing :A. I can't imagine how awful all this is for you, having to stay outwardly calm and 'normal', and be there for the boys. I don't know how you do it, though I do think coming here and sharing it all can be therapeutic, as most of us have discovered from time to time
Bella please can I have the recipe for Orange Spice cake? I'm drooling just at the thought of it!

    My five -
    1. The snow came and went, the sun came and went, the rain came and went, the sleet came and went, the sun came and went again, and through it all the wind blew. The weather forecasters got it right - or some of it anyway :D
    2. Despite the cold I managed to spend a short time tidying the garden. At this time of year the more I tidy the more it looks like it needs it but signs of spring are definitely showing in green buds and shoots all around :T
    3. Postie brought me a £12 voucher from surveys which can be spent in a number of High St shops. That's another pressie put away.
    4. For once all my nails are the same length and look really nice now I've manicured and put varnish on - I really appreciate it when they're neat and tidy
    5. Wednesday is my 5th sobriety anniversary. It's saved me a fortune, and my sanity!

Night night (((hugs))) and sweet dreams

  • Sparrer My Orange Spice cake was an adoptation of a recipe my mum devised in the lean times of yesteryear she called it her 4-3-2-1 cake.

    4oz SR Flour
    3oz caster sugar
    2oz soft margarine
    1 egg
    1 teaspn baking powder
1 tablspn milk (I used orange juice in orange spice cake)
    grated rind of 1 orange
half a teaspn of mixed spice.

Mix all together and beat well. Turn into a deep 8inch sandwich tin.

I cooked this in the Remoska until done. I guess oven would be 30-35 mins @ 160 - 175.

When cooled I added a thin icing made with some of the orange juice and let it dribble over the sides to look rustic, just a nice easy, economical, hip expanding mid-week cake.

The basic mix is very versatile, I use it for fairy cakes (which are divine done in the Remoska) or add cocoa for chocolate ones.

I'm off now to work on today's pleasures/see what I can make from what I already have.

    Bella.

  • Morning All - Just a quick drop-by to list some stuff so that I will do it today - does that make sense?
    My 5 from yesterday
    1. Having a good old chat with folks from the village at the History Group
    2. Talking to my brother on the phone
    3. Discovering some (more) pictures that my Dad painted. He died 5 years ago but not a day goes by that I dont think of him or my Mum (who pre-deceased him)
4.The very helpful planning officer at Wakefield Council - thanks.
    5. Made some yummy lemon curd and gave a jar as a present.

Jexygirl - I feel for you. The review sites are really open to abuse and people are far too slow to thank and far too quick to moan. I think everyone should have to work as a waitress, barmaid, supply teacher, and so on to really appreciate what its like to have to deal with ****s. My OH worked a summer in a posh hotel kitchen as a student and always tips well and always buys bar staff a drink because he remembers how they were treated. I do recall that there is a new law which was written to stop posts on sites praising products from peeps who had a financial interest - sorry cant remember details...
    Love and hugs to all,

Good morning all  - definitely [STRIKE]a bit on the chilly side this morning[/STRIKE] flipping freezing today deep_freeze.gif. Thick ice on the wheelie bin lid and it's frozen shut.

jexygirl - the answering posts gets easier with practice - lots of scrolling (when posting in 'go advanced') OR, if there's too many posts to scroll them all that way, I open another 'tab' at the top, log in again to mse/old-style and click between the reading page/posting page ;) - I have a lousy memory too, so am always looking for ways to make life easier :o. Sorry to hear that regular satisfied customers aren't bothering to comment on TripAdvisor - it's the way of the world that the complainers shout louder than those who compliment. Do you have a guestbook that people sign when they leave? Do you have a website where people can log on when they get home and leave feedback that way? What about one of those signs that say 'If we get something wrong tell US - if we get it right PLEASE tell your friends/TripAdvisor!'. When we're on holiday in Scotland, we've done lots of touring around and passed places that your postings remind me of. There's one on the edge of Loch Duich where we've stopped for coffee/paninis at lunchtime - when I read your posts, that's what I see in my mind's eye. Are you a long way from a decent supermarket (yeah I know - stoopid question to anybody living in the Highlands :o) - I was just thinking that some deli-counter chinese/indian meals would freeze and come in handy for 'takeaway night' instead of ordering in. wd you on running an establishment where 1) you're never sure of your passing trade; 2) never sure of how many covers you'll need to provide for; and 3) you try to maintain good food/varied choice/fresh produce/home cooking/high standards :T:T. Hope the weather improves soon for you and that you start to get some recognition for all your hard-work. Well done on eventually finding five positives HSpuschel-schmal.gif!
sparrer - wow - I'm nowhere near as far back as 1600's - but last night I just broke through into 1700's with 'Lythgoe from Cheshire/Warrington area' - so that in itself is a bit of a milestone . Certainly nobody famous/influential so far - lots of bricklayers, miners and glassblowers among the men - not surprising as I'm from St.Helens and the main industries were mining/glass manufacturer! I'm stuck with one guy born in East Indies in 1837, and don't know how to go any further back as I don't have his parents names and can't find him on one of the census records - I'm sure he's there somewhere - maybe lodging with somebody else or something similar. Wd on your survey voucher :j and congratulations on your '5th Birthday' hbday.gif.
bella - that Orange Spice Cake recipe sounds good - thanks to sparrer for asking and to you for posting it. Now stashed in my documents folder .
Megs mum - how lovely to find some more of your dad's 'legacy' of paintings and what a beautiful way to be remembered. He caught a moment in his life, preserved it in paint and left it for you to enjoy years later. So much more personal than a photograph. Hope you manage to get some of your 'to-do' list accomplished .

Be back in again later for a quick read and find out what you're all up to today. Me - I'll be fighting these sniffles that have pounced on me overnight - now where did I put the paracetamol and 'sniffy sticks'? love Ollie xxx

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
    Good morning everyone.

Sorry I didn't post last night - I had a long phone call from my younger sister which, as usual, left me too drained and miserable to think of any pleasures.

Don't get me wrong, I love my sister, but she's such hard work sometimes. She's having serious financial problems but won't do anything about it as she think asking for or needing help is a sign of failure. Everything I suggested, including visiting MSE (naturally!) was met with "oh, I'll think about it", which means she probably won't. She did ask for the web address for MSE, though, so maybe she'll at least take a look. (I need a 'fingers tightly crossed' smily here!)

Anyway, on to more constructive things.

Acey - I'm glad things went OK for you in court. Well done for continuing to try and sort this out - I can't imagine how hard it must be for your and your boys. I really hope everything gets sorted soon.

Ladyhawk - congratulations on the job offer -sounds like you're likely to win either way here! :)

house elf - me too on the weetabix cake (see pleasure one)! I made my first one a couple of weeks ago and it was good but not quite right, so I think I need more practice at making them. ;)

jollymummy - that must be such a relief. How very unfair of the nurse to scare you like that, even if it was just a misunderstanding on her part.

jexygirl - I'm sorry you're having such a hard time of things at the moment. The tripadvisor thing seems really unfair, particularly if another establishment is trying to sabotage you - that's just unbelievably petty. Could you mention to some of your more regular visitors that you're having these problems and that some positive reviews would help you? I'm not suggesting actively asking for good reviews, but some subtle hints might not go amiss. ;)

Bella - thanks for the spice cake recipe, and sparrer - thanks for asking - I was going to ask, too, but you beat me to it! I tried spice cake for the first time while I was on holiday last year and loved it, so I'm looking forward to trying to make my own. :)

Ollie - thanks for your wonderfully detailed posts. They always brighten my morning.

Right, my five for yesterday - very quickly as I'm supposed to be working :o

    1) Ate the last of the weetabix cake for breakfast. It was just starting to go stale, but it wasn't bad considering it was best part of two weeks old.

    2) A NSD.

    3) An applicant I had spent a couple of months advising at work got a positive decision on his case. I'm really pleased as it was very much a borderline case but the applicant struck me as a nice lad who deserved a chance, and the responsible committee eventually decided they felt the same. :j

    4) Finished off my rubber chicken from Sunday - I've had 6 main meals (3 eaten and 3 in the freezer), 3 rounds of sandwiches, another 2-3 meals' worth of meat in the freezer for another time, and the bones for soup tonight. Not bad for a chicken I didn't even pay for!

    5) I've arranged to go and visit my sister on Saturday, which I hope will cheer her up a bit - particularly as I'll be taking books (some of mine which I don't need anymore) and sweeties (her favourite Haribo are on offer in my local Waitrose). :)

Right, I must go before someone catches on that all this typing isn't actually work related... :o;)
Back after a very long break!

Had an Eeyorish day yesterday but am feeling more human today, thank goodness :)

    1. Finally opened up my Walli$ tops package and 5 sachets of body moisturiser fell out, the tops are lovely too and were a real bargain thanks to a voucher code on this site.

    2. Called one of my credit card companies to reset forgotten online log ons and discovered that they can refund me the £40-odd that's currently sitting on the card, which will boost my holiday spending money fund.

    3. 3 little chillies growing on my plant in the kitchen

    4. Lovely long email from an old uni friend which I am in a better state of mind to reply to today, she's expecting her first baby at 40 after 19 years with her OH :)

    5. Lovely sauna yesterday and planning on nipping out for one at lunchtime today too

    6. DD slept in my bed last night and kept me warm

    7. Making plans for the weekend, going up to Hertfordshire to see a friend, her hubby and children.

    8. Free eco shower thingy came through the post

    9. Got back into a healthy frame of mind without too many internal struggles!
