Hello All. I've not popped in over the past few days or read through posts but I hope everyone's keeping OK and offer hugs and hopes to those who aren't for any reason. A busy few days 'Chez Scotrae' - double birthday, 2-hour job interview, overtired sons, utterly disheartened moi and DH telling me that 'we' are spending too much in the supermarkets ... then admitting he didn't really go to them these days so he meant me. Bearing in mind we have two rapidly growing boys and were all home for a few days in the snow, plus baking for their party, I've spent under £130 on food and drink for 4 this month! That's the thing I felt I was making a useful contribbution to the family finances on since being redundant ... so talk about kicking me while I'm down!:(

Sorry - I'm forgetting the positive focus thing and going OT...

    Five from recent days:

All four grandparents coming round for birthday tea with my boys. We (because DH took over until the gravy stage) did a huge roast chicken, and we're lucky to have all four oldies around, especially after recent scares.

Going to scout round the charity shops after my job interview in another city and finding a Jeremy Clarkson book which I knew my son would enjoy.

The Oxfam cashier gave me a free Fair Trade samplecard with a tea bag and a coffee sachet on - which I've hidden at the back of my cupboard for the next time I run out of coffee and don't feel ready to splash out on a whole new jar!

Looking at the local free paper and seeing the exact job title, employer and all, that I've referred to as my 'ideal job' for the past few years, advertised last night. Perhaps this is why fate didn't want me to get the other three this month. (She says, trying to keep positive.)

Sitting here now and watching lots of birds in the garden. (Lordy - that garden needs a good tidy-up though! Just as well the oldies didn't come round til dark the other night ;))

Right - off to sort some washing, boot myself up the bum and get in with things again.

    My five for yesterday:

    1. Staying chilled and calm at work despite it being manic and chockful of clients who leave everything until the last minute.

    2. Arranging a date for my roof repairs to be finished.

    3. A relaxing evening at home with a glass of red wine and another "odds and ends from the fridge" meal.

    4. Finding a very inspiring thread on the Debtfree Wannabe Board about selling on ebay - must make time to read it all through and get some ideas.

    5. An early night.
Life is not a dress rehearsal.

I'm so sorry about your lack of encouragement. I wonder if you could give DH a meal list and ask him to 'come and tot up the shopping for you , so you can show him where he's going wrong, as you work as a team' He's probably anxious too about the money.
Keep your pecker up and hopefully you'll get lots of encouragement from all of us. I think you're doing a stalwart job and give you a virtual pat on the back:T

So he doesn't really go into supermarkets... but thinks you are spending too much? I think he doesn't realise what things cost nowadays.

My OH is similar, never goes in the supermarket and if he does (about once a year), he's shocked at the prices. I once asked him how much he thought a loaf of bread costs (he doesn't like supermarket brand ones) - he was way out!! ;)

If he asks me to buy extra bits I'll say ok but it costs this much so I'll have to work it out (he regularly updates his "healthy eating" diet and exercise routine - but has finally learned to ask me how much difference it would make to the budget by him swapping some things round ;)).

Don't get too disheartened it's probably more that he's out of touch with food prices and doesn't realise. I wish we spent that little on food each month - we spend more than twice that - sometimes 3 times that :o

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
scotrae I spend £70/75 a month just for me, two cats and a dog...admittedly I could pare that down but they eat better than I do! Show him the meal plans and till receipts, ask for his help next time you do your big shop as you'd like him to suggest where you could cut back...as has been said men get sadly out of touch with the cost of living so they need a gentle nudge to remind them from time to time.

I think you're amazing to feed all of you on so little. If I have friends or family over for a few days my budget is bigger than yours is for a month!

ps . perhaps show him these replies too so he can see how well you do on what you have ;)
  • Scotrae I spend a lot more than that for just 3 of us so tell your hubby to find some bargains and do the shopping while you have a little pamper time :)
Well my 5 are for yesterday and so far today.
    1. My pal came over and we had a good old moan about finances, families and our boys at school.
    2. Made a scrummy beef casserole in the slow cooker.
    3. Having problems with DS and school at the moment he's only 4 and does full time and is having problems sitting still and listening. When the teacher was telling me about a plan they had to help him focus and having a general moan about him. I was proud of myself for not shouting. FOR GOODNESS SAKE, HE'S BEEN ILL EVER SINCE HE STARTED, HE'S TIRED AND HE'S ONLY 4. I just thought it instead :)
    4. The sunshine up here today has put a real spring in my step.
    5. finished my hearts for my blog land pals charity coffee morning - see my blog !!!
    6. It's nearly the weekend - yay !!!
    7. Mum phoned this morning and had a good natter.
That's 7 so life must be pretty ok really. Have a great weekend
