Good luck to Hardup Hesters hubby with the job selection
I had a female boss who wasn't in the least popular Ladyhawk, didn't realise how often I was holding my breath (and my tongue!) til I got another job. Hope you find what you want soon
When I stopped drinking I stopped using alcohol in cooking budgeteer, and discovered how much nicer it all tasted
I so agree with you Ollie, it must never be forgotten. My father, who was Jewish, was shot down over Arnhem (he flew gliders as a spotter pilot). If it hadn't been for the local underground he may have been one of the Auschwitz millions...and millions more of us wouldn't have the freedom to speak of it today

    My Five
    1. yet another nsd, doing well this week :)
    2. The bingo game I was playing ( free for a month :T) has now finished...I made the grand total of £145.75p which is now safely tucked away in my bank :D
    3. I bought a bunch of lemon yellow chrysanthemums over two weeks ago...today I sorted them through and the last few are still bright and cheerful :)
    4. Just fancied a Chinese for tea. Well, you have to go a little mad once in a blue moon and a meal for one always does me two meals (just trying to justify the expense...:o)
    5. Polished my dresser to within an inch of its life, then took photo's of it to go with the for sale ad. Trouble is it looks so nice I don't want to get rid of it now. Typical me

Night night, (((hugs))) everyone..have a peaceful night and sweet dreams,

    :hello: Hello!

    Todays 5 are:-

    1) Made 2 x 1lb weetabix loaves (1 for MS group and 1 for us)

    2) Also made 16 Oatabix chocolate brownies (12 for MS group and 4 for us, this way we don't get to bust our diets)

    3) Red cabbage with apples and onions for tea with 2 sausages each and some potatoes I salvaged from the bottom of the veg basket. There was enough red cabbage to freeze down 4 portions for later.

    4) Hearing from my uncle who is coming to stay for a couple of days! He is quite special and has held the family together by swapping e-mail addresses and news over the past 10 years. Looking forward to spoiling him!

    5) Hearing from both dd and ds to say that they had landed safely and were home/on holiday and were ok.
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Good evening everybody  - miserable 'drippy' evening here :(.

catznine - Great baking/cooking sessions you've been having. Good to hear from the family when they arrive somewhere safely - I'm sure they don't fully realise how us mums never stop worrying about them, no matter how grown-up they become.
bella - your rissoles sound great - do you have a recipe for them please?
mummysaver - wtg on getting your carpink.gif - just goes to show what using up the contents of your fridge/freezer/cupboards can do for you :j.
sparrer - thanks for the reminder about no 'all-nighters' tonight :(. wtg on your bingo winnings - better in your pocket than theirs ;). I'm another who never puts booze in anything I make - I just don't like that taste of it in food. Opened a pack of truffles at Christmas to discover the most over-powering Rum flavour _pale_ - my brother fully appreciated them when he visited ;). My Grandad (who brought me up) was in the Navy during the war and shipwrecked three times - WWII figured very largely in our house.
savingforoz - so pleased you found my post funny - I was worried afterwards that I could have offended you with it . Your odds and ends meal sounds delicious.
budgeteer - I do the trick with the flask as well - great way of saving on the old leccy, isn't it :j. Great idea with the lavender oil on the tissues for behind the radiators :T.
Ladyhawk - aaaaahhh the boss-lady is pregnant - could really explain all her moodiness :). Maybe she's worrying that the place will run smoothly without her when she goes on mat leave ;). good luck with trying to pay off your mortgage early .
nuttybabe - full marks to your school for encouraging young kiddies to do some 'cookery' - always a good way to get them to eat things they wouldn't normally dream of.
GirlySquare - ooooo how could you - I can absolutely taste that carrot cake and hot choccie right now and I'm trying to be ever so good :(. Now I'll just have to break into that box of AllGold that's half-hidden on top of my wardrobe ;).
Hardup-Hester - Good Luck to your OH with his job application :j.
elizabunny - what a great MiL you've got to still be catering for guests at her time of life :T. Hope all goes well with your washing m/c repair.
mineallmine - oh dear - you've reminded me that my bathroom badly needs cleaning - too many 'swish and swipes' recently. I'm on a mission to use up all my toiletries as well - quite alarmed when I cleared the bedroom last weekend.

I'm going to head off to bed right now and do my own postings in the morning. Nitey nite all and HSbow126420.gifall round - love Ollie xxx

Ollie - arghhh recipes, I'm a bit of an ad-hock cook especially when it comes to getting creative with leftovers but my rissoles were something like this.

    4 oz leftover cold lamb
    2 oz breadcrumbs
    1 small onion
All whizzed together in the food processor or could be put through a mincer.

Add a couple of tablespoons (or so) of chopped mint leaves (mine were frozen from last summer) and a good dash of balsamic vinegar.
    Salt
    Pepper

Bind all together with half a beaten egg and form in four balls flattened slightly and tossed in flour (or, as I used corn meal) dip into the rest of the beaten egg then back in the flour and fry until golden brown and cooked through.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Yesterday's simple pleasures:-

    1. Whole house cleaned with help of DH. I do so appreciate his help.

    2. Scrambled egg on toast, one of my fave's but as I don't eat much bread it is a real treat. DS used to call it 'scruffy egg' when he was little so 'scruffy egg' it is to this day.

    3. A siesta, only 15 mins and I barely drifted but it's magic and kept me going until after midnight. I knew I was going to have a late night last night, so it was planned.

    4. A walk to the library and an audio book - I lurrrrve libraries.

    5. A nice easy tea on our return - Chicken thighs thrown in the Remoska along with a few potaoes to roast, accompanied by red cabbage and mashed swede which had been frozen from a previous life.

ooooooooo I was the last on last night and first this morning  - oops no I wasn't - cross posted with bella ;).

bella - Thanks for the 'recipe' for your lamb rissoles :T. Great to have your OH's help since his retirement - there HAS to be a 'plus-side' to these men of ours ;). Mine comes in useful for getting into the very bottom/far reaches of corner cupboards :j - if I got on the floor to do that, I'd be down there till somebody came by to rescue me :o.

    Mine for yesterday:

    1. The patio furniture (payed for by our Housing Association) for my gardening tenants has arrived safely. Those tenants have worked so hard to make a 'real garden' out of just a lawn that was turfed by the builders, that the HA gave them a grant to pay for the furniture :j. This was ordered a few months ago, but delivered yesterday - rectangular folding table, 2 benches, a chair with 'arms' on, and a parasol with base - Good solid stuff too NOT plastic.

    2. Surprise visit from DS2 with dgs3 at lunchtime. They both had a bowl of my Chicken, Veg and Barley Broth from the freezer and dgs3 promptly fell asleep for a couple of hours - he'd had his poor daddy up at 6.00am as well as a couple of times during the night. His mummy is working nightshift, so he needed to be got out of the house for a couple of hours.

    3. Lovely hour chatting to one of my newer tenants while her husband was at his day-centre - the only few hours in the week when somebody else looks after him. Proper 'Darby and Joan' couple :).

    4. Finally got around to having our Haggis for evening meal with mash and carrots/swede (with onion gravy - any scottish posters, please forgive me :o). OH licked his plate clean :rotfl:.

    5. Really enjoyed Emmerdale and Corrie last night BUT of course the highlight of the evening was seeing our gorgeous Martin as I didn't even know he was going to be on :j.

That's me done for now - got to go and earn my wages. Back in again later to catch up on other postings. Take care - love Ollie xxx

Wrote my 5 last night then, just before I posted, all the forums shut down!

    Anyway, 5 for yesterday.

    1) Cleaning the car out. One bag of rubbish, lots of hoovering and wiping footprints off the backs of the front seats (and off the door panels!) and it looks a lot better.

    2) Went swimming with the boys, my mum and my sister.

    3) Spent 3.5 hours in the evening doing some paperwork for my sister. I do get paid for this, which will come in handy.

    4) Bigger son seems to have got a bit of a "don't care" attitude recently so he has come downstairs the last couple of nights after his brother has gone to sleep. I was doing the paperwork last night so he finished his homework. Usually he puts off until Sunday night so he can hand it in today, 4 days early!

Can't remember what number 5 was! Have a nice day, everyone.

  • I've a day off today, so I'm feeling quite bright this morning. One cup of tea down, several more to go and somewhat of a batch cooking day planned for me. Here's my OS pleasures for today/yesterday:

    1) Finishing reading Nella Last's War. Oh my. What a fabulous book! She is such a strong woman and I couldn't put it down. Inspirational, truly inspirational.
    2) Planning to use the bag of pre-sliced onions (the kind you get in the self-assembly salad bars) that I bought when YS at 35p and froze in a load of onion bhajis today. They'll go into the freezer as I'll have cooked the onion so I can get them out, defrost and then bake them whenever.
    3) Making a cheese and bacon pancake bake. I'm going to put this into the freezer for Shrove Tuesday so it'll be one less thing to do if we throw a pancake party. The components will be cooked; I'll have made the pancakes and the cheese and bacon sauce and just layer it together, then let it cool. :) It's very tasty, and because it is so filling you need precious little of it. I might try working out the costings on it, just out of idle curiosity...
    4) Having new glasses. I am a bit down about them as they cost so much (there wasn't a pair in the offer I liked, and in the end the better fitting glasses came from the children's section!). I didn't have the mind on me to ask for the prescription and walk away. :( However, seeing things clearly with my new specs is definitely a pleasure.
    5) I've got a strange stirring feeling in my heart to do more work for charity. I am crafty and feel like making toys as Nella did in her diary. I have no idea where to start, but one day I'd like to help somehow. I class this as a pleasure, because it just feels like one, oddly!

Anyway, thanks for bearing with my somewhat odd and long-winded pleasures. Have a good day, everyone. :)

    Hi all here's mine:

    1. The telephone "job interview" people didn't ring last night - think it's really a distance training course trying to get me to pay £2k in the hopes of getting another job :rotfl: So quite relieved I didn't have to deal with that one.

    2. Typing up my months meal plan last night. Think we have most of the food we need till 16th, so might actually be spending less on groceries this month.

    3. Still not had official redundancy notice so at least that will be a few more days pay :(

    4. Yellow stickered teacakes after dinner with a cup of lady grey tea :D

    5. erm.... the threat of redundancy hanging over my head has concentrated my mind on my budget and on not throwing any food away. It has also stopped me buying those "extra bits" that don't quite fit into any budget category as well as charity shop clothes. So far have been able to cover £200 more of OH's bills than I ever thought I would (we split things so he pays some things, I pay others - he has only 2 hours work a week now :(). Still not sure if I've worked it out wrong :o
