  • Good luck with the new job Purple Kitten!

    1) Made a batch of chutney with the free apples and there was more than I'd calculated, which is lovely. I had all the door and windows open (DH doesn't like the smell) as I was cleaning up too, so it was two birds with one stone.
    2) Made a phone pocket out of felt and sequins etc for my friend's birthday. It didn't cost a thing but no-one else has one like it. She was really pleased.
    3) Almost got some washing dry on the line and it is now hanging on the airers on the landing, getting crispy.
    4) DS threw away two perfectly nice jumpers and as I was fishing them out of the bin, intending to have stern words about sending things to charity shops, I realised they might fit DH. He has a collection of almost respectable jumpers that take their turn in a cupboard at work for emergency use when he feels cold.
    5) Got a £5 off the next shop from our supermarket, so I'm going to look at the date carefully and then get some Christmas stuff with it. It will pay for a bottle of wine.

Evening all (it was morning when I started this but have been sleeping off and on all day so typing this in word hence might be a different font)

Have skimmed through the posts briefly, welcome to the newbies, welcome back to the returners, get well now to the poorlies, and there's nowt wrong with the tallies! I'm 4' 11 1/2” but my SiL is 6' 2”, my DGS's much the same height and my DGD 5' 9 at 15 years old. When the family is all together I feel like a mushroom in a pine forest!

1.No delays on flights either way and no problems so sorry, but you won't see us on the next series of the orange airline, making a scene. In fact I don't know why people make a fuss about them, it isn't difficult to find out how the system works.
2.The hotel was superb, a very posh room with huge beds which the staff insisted on pushing together every morning, and we separated every night. Much as I like my friends company and she mine, we didn't really fancy sleeping that closely! There was a glass door to the bathroom which was 'interesting', we got into the habit of saying 'I'm going to sing' when either of us went to the bathroom. The food was delish, had we taken advantage of everything on offer at breakfast we'd have been there til lunchtime, they catered for almost every nationality.
3.La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's unfinished cathedral. When we came out of the metro and turned around it was there right in front of us. I've wanted to see it for many years and admit I was speechless (for a change) and very tearful, silly sparrer
4.Park Guell, another of Gaudi's works which was a haven of peace in the city, with the museum of his home, and amazing mosaics everywhere. To reach it we walked up a very, very steep hill, so steep and long that halfway up they'd installed escalators or we'd never have made it to the top. We were amazed to see cars and buses going up and down, they must have extremely good gear boxes/brakes.
5.The cable car, 350 meters over the harbour from the World Trade Centre in the old port to Montjuic, a huge park which houses the national palace and the 1992 Olympic stadium. Another crossed off my bucket list, it was quite hairy but very exciting that high up.
6.Las Ramblas, a long shopping street that runs from the harbour area to Placa Catalunya with its beautiful fountains. We seemed to find our way there four out of the five days we were there! Restaurants of every type and nationality, stalls which sell everything from ice cream with possibly 40 flavours to 'designer' clothing, very yummy tapas bars and cake shops, the latter which could explain our great interest in the area...
7.Filling in the afternoon before the flight home by taking an open topped bus tour and meeting up with a very interesting gentleman and his very pretty daughter, (who was adopted from Romania 13 years ago), who had flown in from South Carolina because his wife had told them to get out from under her feet for a while. Because he works for an airline they flew business class, how posh! Interestingly he said very few Americans agree with the wars their governments interfere in – his words not mine, and if there isn't a change of government soon North America is heading for bankruptcy. What a thought.
8.We all went to the zoo which was really quite a sad place with obviously little money invested in it, but as always the penguins made me laugh, and the peacocks were very cheeky and stole some of our bread rolls
9.Felt the beginnings of a chest infection coming on so called into a pharmacy where I was given a course of my usual anti-b's and steroids at a quarter of the cost of scrips at home.
10.Sleeping for two days when home and getting a home visit today from a lovely lady GP who is going to call in to see me tomorrow. Thank you NHS
11.being reunited with my little dog and two terrorist mogs.

Sorry it's such a long post, will go back to sleep now

Thanks TILAMS. Speaking of moving along, most Celtic 'fans' were complete arrses causing trouble everywhere, the police had to drag them out of several bars and into police vans. The pleasure - the match ended as we got on our plane so we missed the uproar they caused there. Mind you very few argued with the number of police and the length of those truncheons! We felt embarrassed for being British but others on the bus were kind and said we hadn't seen the Spanish fans yet!
Think the meds are doing strange things to my thought processes, so will stop rambling and go back to sleep. S

Welcome back Sparrer, your trip sounds amazing, wish I'd been a stowaway!

Darn it, just wrote lots of lovely pleasures then lost them as I hit the wrong button......in a nutshell,

OH and I texted and he's coming over on Saturday evening, maybe just for me to give him his stuff or maybe to talk, I don't know what I want. Feeling a bit emotional.

    Morning

Sparrer - Sounds like you had an amazing time.Sorry you have come back not feeling too well so get well NOW.

    Pleasures for yesterday;
    1. DD's 17th Birthday . She was very spoilt and received lots of lovely presents which she was very pleased with.
    2. Dinner out with the family and in-laws. Had a voucher for free starters, the mains were all reasonable priced and had birthday cookie (DD wanted a giant millies cookie) so even with a round of drinks it was less than I had budgeted for :money:. Thanks to MSE its great to be able to do these things as know the money is all accounted for,
    3. £3 luncheon vouchers in the post for doing a survey and a card to pick up something from the post office which I think is a product trial for a follow up survey.
    4. Was also one of my cousins birthday yesterday who I used to babysit many years ago so had nice chats on facebook with him. He doesn't really do family so felt very honoured when I got a friend request off him.
    5. Feeling happy and secure with my little family

Hugs to all who need them
  • Oh dear SPARRA. All this carp and tee shirts. Blooming glad I am covering rugby this season, where the only stewards you see are directing in the caroark and behind the bar. You see in rugby they do not mess about with so called discipline, if you get a red, you get banned. And if it is bad, not just for a game or tow, but three full months worth and more. Some ex captains should take note.

I has saved sommits in the fridge for yous, cos you missed it on Sunday.

Dear mes, must get the treadder out and get some nectar for the current Ms Sonny.

    Good morning all -
[which has disappeared twice so far. Gremlins United call to arms?]

pre-1. Final episode of Fame is the Spur as I left hier matin. How it rings for our times! Wonderful cast led by Ian McKellan and June Barry.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0121293/episodes/guide
[latter 4 still available, if you hurry]
    1. Just put down 'phone. France called while I was outside awaiting no.2 lapsang zap. Turned into battle vs vast heavy kelim, which I've allowed to be rained on exprès, to freshen up after summer brocante use. I love the reverse as much as anything - thousands of multicoloured knotted ends and trails. It's ancient, faded, tight-woven, hence fit for purpose. Found it in Dunkerque - 2E. Eventually triumphed in heaving it over line and straightening it out to weather and dry over the coming days. B. phoning back from France ce soir and I will talk him through printing probs in Provençal. That will be fun.

    2. 200 gms framboises into current freezer bag. They're slowing down now - and another fraise eaten.

    3. 2 more clusters of white sweet peas budding. It is ridiculous. Also seeing remaining runner beans looking rather stalled and wonder how long I should leave them before picking, even if tiny. Wondering about lifting beetroot, too. Lots of wondering on all fronts, not garden alone, atm.

    4. Halfway down rainy M11 realised I had left THE jacket on door, while remembering the print-outs. Next week therefore, along with all the French priestly vestments and fingers crossed liturgically and non-. Love sense of achievement [unwarranted I know]in driving to this market, unloading, parking in Brick Lane and the walk back to wait 2+hours for setting up. Chatting with other dealers makes me admire so many of them, reflect on the generosity of spirit and stoicism that is the over-riding common thread among those who play the great game. They liked the jacket story too - want to see it next week. Easier yesterday, thanks to B&D trolley. Only 4xwheeled aller-retours, instead of 20-ish one by one luggings. No real buzz yesterday, noted by all. Takings down, ditto. Apparently it's end of month, salaries in next week, with chrimbo pick-up due, say old hands. On verra. Meantime, I'm invited to a slightly bigger 'frame' space, which I accept with alacrity, allowing extra tables, next week. £5 more should self-pay, if I can put my 7 jools/bling/objêts de vertu cases out, which I can't at present, until some early leavers vacate adjacent tables, if they do, around 17h. Too late then. Banking to do and shipping pick up to clarify - Eek week ahead!

    5. sparrer - lovely to read and all familiar. Late blvd R's offspring married there and King came briefly afterwards because of various Great and Good and Olympic connections - just small politesses with wedding bits, but likeable. Liked him then and have always liked her, spirited Greek gal bringing backbone to Spain's emergence from Franco years. Was living in France when that began, so immediacy, proximity, Basque doings, etc. made it a topic vif. Took pics as R & I swayed about in that cable car over the Med, stuck for >1 hour, mid-journey. Couldn't make anything of the distant gesticulations from control tower, even with binocs. As you see, eventually arrived through years to write this:-) Hoped you had a word to Columbus down on the beach, although my favourite public statue is the miner at Dover, now moved to a roundabout out of town. That's NOT good. I used to go to him, touch, linger, empathise on every return.
sparrer - As weather is for Big Cold country-wide this w/e, stay in, stay warm, stay snuggled. Goes for everyone, but we know you are extra-susceptible.

    6. Slept 8 hours till after 7!- unheard of for me. Woman's Hour nearly over, need to crack on, do banking. Anticipation of Bus Pass use for this is truly a pleasure and I am grateful for it.

Welcome back, village life. Take heart and stay on board, even when the tough times hit. This is a sustaining Thread, with constancy and benefit built-in. You may note I constantly finesse the notional. 5. and found a new way today, in honour of you!:-)

    Kittikins - take care.

Frith - is there no gifted retired teacher locally who could teach PROPERLY/learn with younger son? I want you to have a Mrs Ott equivalent - as any who knew Hampstead Parochial school in the 70's/80's will remember. Every child should have a Mrs Ott. We successfully fought against her forced age-grounds retirement twice, then she took children at her home[now she'd be happily working still, requirement!]. She was an original trespasser, wonderful brain, natural discipline painlessly flowed, children bloomed eagerly for her, EVERY child, gifted and glorious Mrs Ott. She also championned an individual's cursive hand. It IS important to brain function, sequential thinking development [as the educator grads on here do know]. Many proven studies etc.etc. A chap was talking last week about the Why? of it- r4. I'm more in France and r3 atm, as a way of avoiding JS urgh. Can't stand the sight of him, never could and even Grauniad pages online tend to have a pic.
That said, the delicious Gloomsbury's on now:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ngrwf - do listen!

College has just phoned. Booking !!!!-up by student: hols/closed, so all delayed a week now.

TGIF's to all who need this thought.
