Kittikins - good guess then eh?
Mcculloch - the Paralympic games are truly inspiring .However to be truly "inclusive" should it not be undertaken at the same time as the Olympic games ?? Just my thoughts really.
Have a good day all !
A lot of people have said that, but I'm of a slightly different opinion. When Disability Sports were first included as part of the mainstream Commonwealth Games disabled athletes were treated as second class citizens. Tanni Grey Thompson and Chris Hallam had to share a Wales vest because only one was supplied for example... They put up and shut up.
There are enough people of closed minds around for that still to happen. I've seen some awful troll comments on sports sites that indicate they are probably in the majority.
There are so many events in the Paralympics it would mean the Olympics would last nearly a month. That's too long.
Funding and audience size would be huge issues.
The Paralympics has sold out, but lots of true Disability Sports fans wouldn't be able to see events they wanted to see if Olympics fans got in the mix - and vice versa.
Also the large numbers of disabled people trying to access facilities at the same time as non disabled... the fact that venues need to be adapted for disability events so would have to be specially built.
Most crucially, there is the feeling amongst disabled people that 'this is our time'. There were a lot of references in the opening ceremony that were of more relevance to disabled people. Non disabled didn't get them. Well that's good in its way ... non-disabled people felt excluded and most disabled people face that each day.
I'm aware my view is in the minority and incidentally a sizeable number of disabled people don't support the Paralympics. The reason is that they feel it gives a twisted view of disability. There is an expectation that all disabled people can actually achieve these feats.
I used to be able to run but there is no way I could have ever got as fast as those in my category. Paralympians are truly superhumans - you shouldn't be able to ride a bike flat out around a velodrome with one leg, but some do. You need strong legs to control a horse... except you don't.
I do support the Paralympians and Paralympic sport fully.
*Off soapbox*.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -
Evening all.
It's interesting to hear different views on the Paralympics - it strikes me that it's a pity that about the only time we get to see disabled sports on TV is during the Paralympics - unlike the Olympics, I don't know anything about most of the people competing, and personally I'd be as keen to watch wheelchair racing etc as any other sport. (More so in the case of wheelchair rugby, aka murderball - it's a great sport, so why is it only shown every four years?) I know what you mean about closed minds, though, mcculloch - the main reason I walked out of the comedy club a few weeks ago was because of the highly offensive 'jokes' the person on stage (I refuse to call him a comedian) was telling about disabled people - sadly nothing is likely to change the mind of someone that ignorant and narrow-minded.
Anyway, pleasures:
1) A ridiculously late lie-in this morning - I slept for 12 and a half hours!
2) Bacon and avocado sandwich for brunch.
3) An expensive sort of pleasure - my hair has had a much-needed cut. I really must remember, though, that my hairdresser tends to be a bit scissor-happy - it's a good haircut, but my word it's short!
4) Seeing a pic of my DP's new puddy tats - love at first 'awww'. :happyhear
5) A takeaway curry tonight.
Right, back to the Paralympics for an hour or so before going out to collect my dinner.Back after a very long break!0 -
1. Loving the paralympics, and can't wait to go on Wednesday with DD
2. Lovely chats with DD on the phone
3. Had a great evening last night, apart from one 'friend' being a PITA, I will avoid nights out with her in future! "Only" spent £20
4. Finally managed to order replacement O level certificates which I will need to apply for my change of career course.
5. Have got a few more 'bits' done around the house, of course not everything I need to, but am feeling quite good about it.
Feeling really fed up with OH today, he was supposed to be spending time with me this weekend and possibly even taking me out to dinner as he changed our plans at the last minute earlier in the week when he had to work unexpectedly. However he texted this morning to say he was going down to Brighton to see a friend this morning, then coming to me.
I've been faffing about all day wondering what time he was coming, only to be told about 5pm that he and his friend have gone to Pride (not an event I would normally associate with OH or his friend......) and he said he "should" be coming over later!!
I told him not to bother, put the phone down on him and he's texted but really, what's the point, he apologises, I whinge and put up with it and nothing ever changes. The relationship doesn't seem worth the effort any more, I think it's time to say enough is enough.
(Watch this space, he'll probably say or do something lovely tomorrow and I'll be fine again, lol, but I'm not sure it'll work this time)0 -
Good evening all!
Sparrer- I blame the owners not the dogs . Like the chap on the news yesterday who got 12 months when his dogs got out of an open window and attacked 10 people.
CCP - its nice to hear that your DP's have another pet !
Skint - doesyour DS not fancy a job in a racing yard like his Mum? ... he can clearly get up early enough:D
Mhagster ((hugs)) bold ones!!
Mculloch - no soap box , we like to consider other people's opinions and feelings on this thread . But I guess I am a bit prickly ..as I am a disabled woman who was also competitive sports person . During both of my chosen sports it was women who were marginalised , I did not have my disability then ( actually I did have the tumour but didn't know it). I remember changing in to my silks in a broom cupboard type of scenario as it was a male dominated sport and males had changing rooms . Thankfully things have moved on slightly for women in racing and I feel this is beginning to be the case for disabled people in all sports... but there is a long way to go to change peoples attitudes . For example ,I had a "frank exchange of words" with a store manager as he said that his non disabled staff used the disabled parking bays in the evenings as they didn't want their cars to be damaged (closer to the store you see). I said did he not think disabled people came out at night ??? Clearly not .. we are meant to be tucked up in bed and not be active consumers after 6pm ...
Its often society that "disables" people far more than any physical impairment imho . The Paralympics positively reinforces "difference" which is fantastic ,as would the integration of non disabled and disabled people. It's the enforced separatism that really bothers me...we need more Oscar Prestorius' (sp) who did race against non disabled athletes in the OlympicsAgain only my opinion
Shut up chicken !! Ok ...
5 for yesterday
1. Free cider to try ,finally sourced by OH in Mr. T
2. Mum bought me a pack of Curly Wurly's .. I think they are smaller than I remember.

I'm also hacked off that he didn't to invite me to join him and his friend(s). So, yup, a night in on my own fuming about my insensitive berk of a boyfriend. Ho hum. Oooh and knowing his energy levels, tomorrow he'll be in MS-fog land so it'll be Monday at the earliest before he comes over0

Oh, Kittkins, another one here where "enough is enough". Am crying as I type. Again.
During the year, I get two weeks without children. He didn't take an hour off during either week, to spend a bit more time with me. The second week, he decided to go abroad!
Last week he went to Wales, we didn't go because I didn't feel we were welcome. (Well, we went for a day and met up for a couple of hours).
He is home now. Off to see his mother tomorrow. Then he's abroad again for a week. Then he has his children for a week. Then he's abroad for another week.
Oh, and rugby has started again which takes all of every single Sunday. And Thursday evenings...
I'm absolutely fed up with it. This isn't a relationship, it's just some bloke who comes round for tea a couple of times a fortnight.0 -
Yup, I'm DD-free as well until Monday, I know what you're feeling *sigh* Wish we lived closer so we could share a bottle of wine and put the world to rights0

Sorry to read your last post, Frith. It sounds as if he needs shaking up a bit.
1) Watching DH,DS and DD loading the car up to take the rest of DD's stuff back to Uni. They were working so well together while ...
2) I made a batch of shortbread, Gran's recipe. It always gives me great pleasure as it's easier than pastry and always turns out well.
3) A scoop of cow muck delivered by a friend of a neighbour. We paid in cash and honey.
4) A simple pick-and-mix salad meal with DD's new 'friend' (they don't go out these days, apparently. They 'see' each other. What does it mean?) Anyway, he was lovely.
5) £1 off my favourite gardening magazine, which got me to buy it, but I shall enjoy reading it.
Sunday school tomorrow! I'm using mud as an example in my storytelling. It's going to get messy ...0 -
I don't like wine but people keep buying it for me so there's plenty under the stairs here!
When I say "he's abroad" then "he's looking after his children" that means I don't see him (just to be clear). So I'll probably see him once in 5 weeks.
Am I really selfish to think that isn't really enough?0
