  • It's not often I take stock and realise what have been pleasures in my day :o So I had a think today, and here's mine :D
    1. Fixing my tumble dryer all by myself before DH got out of bed (it was blowing cold air and not drying ) involved taking TD to pieces and re-setting thermostat (all info gained from internet) and it works :j I thought it meant having to buy a new one  but I have saved a fortune :T
    2. Making 3 loaves of Thriftlady's bread by hand yesterday evening, serving it up as toast for breakfast  DH and DD loved it, and I've still got 2 loaves in the freezer :j
    3. Taking the Christmas decorations down, and giving the lounge a good clean :D
    4. Becoming an Aunty for the 4th time today - he's a baby boy but doesn't have a name yet :A
    5. Maybe not a pleasure - but making my sandwiches for going back to work tomorrow and getting my clothes ready - well I suppose it is a pleasure, as it's something I won't have to do tomorrow :D
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

Ok, here are my five for today:

1 Reading Olliebeak's post, thank you for all your kind comments!
2 Taking boys to watch Fantastic Mr Fox at the £1 showing - fab film!
3 Reminding DS2 that he does like asparagus and used to eat it when he was a baby in his high-chair ... he then proceeded to eat all of mine so not sure if that's a pleasure really ...
4 Being given two very cute cuddly toys from a kind lady on freecycle - they are polar animals so that has got me off the hook with my sewing for a while (did think about passing them off as 'home-made' to my sons but I'm sure they'd see through that, what with the stitching not being wonky, etc....)
5 Getting all my ironing done and put away and getting all the uniforms / PE kits / School bags ready for Tuesday so that I don't have a mad rush tomorrow night!

See you all tomorrow - is it first day back at work for most people?

    Hiya all

Hope everyone is well and not too cold!!

Ollie - I love that advert as well and have gone as far as to pretend cry in a shop but not thrown myself on the floor yet - I leave that to dd when she is in one of her strops!! :P

    Mine for today:

1 Walked to the shop in the snow. I dont mind fresh snow, its the frozen snow that will be on the pavement tomorrow I dont like. So it was a nice walk!

2 Did not deviate from my list although the shop didnt have half of what i wanted as they were not getting deliveries due to the bad weather but no impulse buying - yay.

3 Dh went out to get me the art of crochet! I tried unsucessfully this morning and phoned some places. He went where I told him and they didnt have it so he drove to another shop and got it for me - how sweet of him! :T

4 Roast pork for tea. cut the joint in half so half in freezer and cooked half. And have half of what I cooked left for tea tomorrow. AND more importantly EVERYONE even dd (who doesnt normally eat hardly anything and tries very hard not to eat any veg) ate it all even the peas which i dont think she has EVER eaten!!! :T:T:T

5 An evening wrapped in blanket, trying to crochet with a cup of hot chocolate. I cant wait!!!!

got to put kids to bed now so i can crochet.

    4. Knowing the cats are napping in the bedroom, they know its banned to be in there but sometimes its nice to let them misbehave.:p

Mine aren't allowed in my bedroom either - they sit with their paws on the threshold and look at me in a beseeching manner which I have to ingore otherwise I get their fluff over EVERYTHING!

    1) Woken up by one of the cats throwing up (and no that's certainly not a pleasure) - the pleasure is that he managed to miss the carpet so it was very easy to clean

    2) Didn't have to think about lunch or supper as there was yummy tart and soup in the fridge

    3) Went to the shops and bought a couple of small things that my mum wanted from Wilkies. Though I am really sad because when I see her on Tuesday afternoon/ evening it will be the last time for a very long time since she is going back to South Africa (silly me is tearing up at the thought). Maybe this is an excuse to book a holiday for this time next year?

    4) Went to the shops early so I got a free parking space and the shops were not to crowded... always a pleasure!

    5) Am about to snuggle up in bed and watch Little Miss Sunshine which I was given for my birthday in September and have not gotten round to watching yet.

And a cheeky 6th - am nearly finished sorting out my car insurance. I have spent the afternoon trawling though various sites (only have two more to do). I will be very relieved (if not poorer) once this boring job is complete.

hope everyone has a good day back at work tomorrow.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

    Love this thread! So positive!:T

    1) Knitting a scarf - bought the wool for dd as she wanted to learn to knit again but the wool was multi coloured and a bit difficult for a beginner as the threads seem to separate as you knit, so I got the pretty wool and dd has some of the nice cream speckled wool my sister gave me last year.

    2) Making a roast beef dinner using leftover beef from Christmas that I had frozen in slices in red wine and beef gravy! Yum! Pud was leftover hm Christmas pud and brandy butter.

    3) Enjoying a candlelit bath using some of the lovely sanctuary gifts and candles I got for Christmas. So relaxed now!

    4) Doing a larder/freezer and fridge stocktake and knowing that wolf is staying well away from our door! mind you we will be living on beans and tuna for most of the time!;)

    5) Re-using some of the pretty gift boxes for packing away the Christmas decs.

    Happy New year!

    Evening

    Mine for today are

1 Quiet day spent at home mainly knitting as house was cleaned yest and dinner mainly out of the freezer

2 Lovely Christmas type dinner from lots of frozen left overs, mash, swede and carrot, red cabbage turkey etc Was lovely with very little effort involved.

3 Made myself a pompom scarf in a lovely cheerful red colour. I have made about a dozen of them for DD's and friends for christmas etc and this is the first I have made myself

4 Had a lovely day with Hubbie, this is the last day before going back to work and was lovely to have had time to talk to each other etc. When he is at work he works such long hours that by the time he comes home he generally eats then falls asleep or if not I know that he is only half listening to me as he is so tired so time off together has been lovely.

5 Tea already made for tomorrow (corned beef hash - we like it second day best!) sandwiches already made in freezer and all clothes ready for work, so nothing to worry about for the morning (other than having to start getting up again at 4.50 a.m. )

    Have a good evening all

  • Hi all

Can I add my thanks too to Olliebeak , I really love the thought you put into your posts... xx

    Todays for me are:

    1. Enjoying my last lie in before work resumes tomorrow and DD goes back to school on Tuesday, I only work part time but stillhave to get back into routine tomorrow.

    2. A lovely shower using Lush Snow Fairy shower gel to start my day when I eventually got up,mmmmmmmmmmmm such a delicious smell.

    3. A lovely white frosty start to the day. everywhere looked so pretty outside, almost like it had snowed, we rarely get snow where we live in Dorset. I guess I will be hoping its not so frosty in the mornings from tomorrow onwards!

    4. Enjoying a lazy day , easy meals today - sausage baguettes for lunch and boiled bacon, fried potatoes etc for tea, spending time in front of the TV ,watched Mamma Mia - DH hadnt seen it before (believe it or not!!). Started going through some of my cookery mags and cutting out recipes - feeling quite inspired !

    5. Speaking to my mum on the phone a little while ago and hearing her sound much brighter than she has of late , she has a bad back at the moment which has been getting her down.

Hope everyones start to the week is OK, be safe everyone.

Hello All! We're back from our budget trip to London so I'm checking in quickly. A busy week ahead (including an interview - yayhay!) and lots of fresh starts but hopefully I'll have chance to read through and catch up on your news some time.

    5 from recent days:

    1. Marvelling at the incredible Natural History Museum building whilst queuing outside and then some more once inside. I wanted to photograph every carving and feature on the pillars and walls.

    2. Watching my boys having great fun 'Tube surfing' and the City folk trying not to laugh at them. (Spot who isn't used to trying to stand on trains and the underground!)

    3. Coming out of the Underground and realising we were right at the bottom of Big Ben. Back in the Travelodge room we spotted the same location on a new report and could all say "We've been there!".

    4. Walking lots and lots and lots. A good start to the new year's resolutions even though the eating out wasn't.

    5. Getting home. I've got tomorrow to get the boys ready for school, washing done and the house back together. Another upside to having now job!

I have serious weight to lose and healthy habits to form in the next few months and need to be positive. Hopefully this smiley happy thread will help with that!

    Hi all

Thank you to all of you who provided more lovely comments about my blinds, I feel so good and proud now! Some have mentioned how "clever" and "crafty" I am - I am NOT, really, but was just determined to make it work. I think that if someone can just about use a sewing machine, then they can tackle a project like this. You just need to know how to sew in straight (ish!) lines, that's all. The challenge for me has been in the measurements, much more than in the sewing. I followed a book and tried to get help in my craft class, but the book was ancient and did not mention any fancy tape to sew at the back, and the teacher at the class is very good at fashion but not experienced in soft furnishing so I had very much to rely on advice from here and there. I did not even know that I had to put sticks in the blinds to keep them stiff! In the end someone gave me an address for a curtains materials shop and I went there to ask for help. They sold me all the bits and pieces: sticks, string and the fancy tape that I had never heard about before, something you sew in the back of the lining and that has a special pocket to insert the sticks in, and also ribbon to put the strings through (I hope I am making it clear!).

Also, as mentioned, I just REFUSED to pay upwards of £450 for three pieces of fabric hanging up and down my windows, so I just gave it a go. I feel very fortunate that it works!

All together all the extra bits and pieces, including thread, cost me under £60. So I feel good good good. And now that you dear OSers have told me that you like them I feel even better. Thank you!

Ollie, I don't see many of "my" babies because people move on and out of London and I also tend not to stay in touch (it would be too much to stay in touch with most of the mums and babies I worked for, they must run in the hundreds now!). I know this baby's family well because they are very close neighbours and DD babysits for them, too. However, I am still in close contact with my first baby, who is now 7 years old and am good friends with his mum. I also doulaed for his little brother who is now nearly 5 years old, but this is an exception rather than the rule.

I had a splendid day today and am very happy! Here are my pleasures:

1 - DH and I had planned to have an alternative New Year celebration when all the madness of the real NYE was out of the way so this is what we did today:

2 - We had lunch at a Chinese restaurant that does a set Dim Sum menu and has loads of vegetarian choices. It was really tasty!

3 - We went to the Royal Festival Hall in the South Bank where they had a free ballroom dancing event and we took part in a beginners class, where we learnt a few basic steps - and we danced them to music!

4 - We then went to see Tokyo Story, a 1953 Japanese film, very sad (and a bit slow) but very very beautiful and moving.

5 - We went back to the dance event (which was going on until 7pm) but by this time the REAL dancers were out there so we just enjoyed watching the dancers and listened to the live band. .

6 - As a consequence, we have made a commitment to go to dance lessons together and learn (we used to salsa but we left it a long time ago). Can't wait!

7 - Back home, online and guess what, I found a class beginning tomorrow, just down the road from where we live! 6 weeks - brilliant!

Off to bed now, very happy but also very tired. Love to all xxx
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • 1) Had a lovely day yesterday for DS's birthday. We went out for brunch and they messed up the order, so he got a free piece of chocolate gateau! We went bowling (everyone was rubbish) in the afternoon and then played pool, which was a first for me. I cooked pizza at home to save money and then we all snuggled up under quilts to watch a DVD. DS's girlfriend and DD's boyfriend spent the day with us too and stayed over when the snow looked too deep to venture out.
    2) Finally emailed the OU assignment off. All those little fiddly bits like putting on headers and footers take too long.
    3) Lived on leftovers all day. I just put them out and let everyone help themselves. The salmon served eight for dinner, three lunches and four teas, with one sandwich.
    4) Coffee date with DH, just before we go back to work. We took a couple of Christmas chocolates instead of spending money on cake.
    5) Have cut up the Christmas cards for next year's scraps and enjoyed rereading them as I did so. Put up DS's birthday cards and sorted out all the cash and vouchers we got for Christmas so that everything is in the right account. Next job, the tree!
