Well, I agree with silverfoxdude - someone has to! It's pathetic that speed limits are the same when roads are not busy at all. It's pathetic that road work speed limits "to protect the workforce" operate 24 hours a day. It's pathetic that, when it would cost £1 to add technology (a timer - d'oh) to speed cameras to operate differential limits at different times of day, we have to put up with all this nonsense about it being just as dangerous at all times.

All that said, silverfoxdude, in your position (and profession) you should have a speed camera detector and you wouldn't have 9 points by now. Another recent thread shows you could get one for £20 which is a bargain.

Silverfoxdude do not buy the detector save your self some money and drive within the speed limit at all times, not just when it suits you.

I disagree with most of the comments above. There are some major roads that I know of with 30mph limits and at 4am the 30mph limit would be laughable. I'm thinking straight, wide, no houses, no businesses, wide verges etc.

Really there should be some effort to identify the potential hazards/risks in a situation and act accordingly.

I very much doubt that you can contest the points, so I'd advise either being very very careful until 3 of your points fall off, and/or buying one of the many GPS location devices available. I drove for 18 months with 9 points and I was just very careful. I also chose the most obscure routes to places rather than using motorways or large dual carriageways.

It is also possible to make the 30-40 confusion since no great effort seems to made with signage in some areas. When I had 9 points I had a few worrying moments where I thought I'd been doing 40 in a 30 due to inconsistent signing.

With detection you need to consider:
    -GPS for fixed sites
    -Radar for mobile
-Laser jammer if you really want to go the distance

but most importantly being vigilant and generally observing the limits is the best way.

There's good info at the speedtrap bible and also at pepipoo

wow, what a flaming! Speed cameras are no more than mobile piggy banks and should be ripped out immediatly, i fully agree with traffic calming measures in built up areas where there are people/children, who wouldnt, and i agree that there are too many young idiots on the road tearing about, and drink drivers-hang em i say, but arent people entitled to live a little? ive been on many a road at night and not known what the speed limit is but considered it safe to do 40 or 50mph, who hasnt? if im on an empty motorway at night and there is no traffic i certainly dont sit at 70mph for the next 100miles or so, i find it hard to believe that anyone does, do you?
or am i living in my own little world?
    silverfoxdude you have pm
  • Sorry but i wish more taxi driver were penalised for speeding. I actually told the taxi driver we had the other Saturday to either slow down or stop and we would get out and walk. He was doing 50 in a 30. He slowed down thank goodness but i didn't tip him like i usually do nor did i book his company for the return i called a different company.

I was flashed on the m62 at 4am at a road works that had a camera on to protect the workmen during the day they also left this camera on at night grossing them over 2 million pounds in a year from poor suckers like me
Actually it was £1m over an 18 month period and there was a lot of work going on a night as well as during the day. That was one of the few cameras that was really justified though. The lanes were very very narrow and for a motorway it was a tight bend and I saw lots and lots of drivers doing 80+ through there. Rumour has it that the 2500 year old body that they found buried with his chariot when doing the roadworks had actually been flashed and had a ticket pending too !

As for the ticket, you knew the rules, you broke 'em.

Different speed limit for different times of day just 'aint gonna happen. Why should it? Not long ago didn't a taxi driver run a red light at 3am near Manchester Airport and get 2 people killed? He 'assumed' that the roads were empty. If you have timer switches in speed cameras you also have to change the speed limit signs too. Then you'll get the "But my Rolex was slow by 5 minutes your Honour!" brigade.

Yes, speed cameras, 90% of them at least are there to generate revenue and not to improve satety. (Calling them safety cameras instead of speed cameras is definately an insult to our intelligence) But look at it this way- It's good training for the future. Why do you think so much money and technology is being thrown at Galileo. Our own highly advanced GPS system is going to be used against us motorists. Every new car (and old ones within a certain time limit) will be fitted with a transponder. If you speed, your fine will be on your doormat before you get home. It will make the implementing of tolls a piece of p1ss. Yeah we all like to put our foot down every now and again. When plod's not around, or Mr Gatso and it's safe to do so. - That will all end. You think it's bad now Silverfoxdude? - just wait another 5 or 10 years.
