GOING OFF-TOPIC

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: While it’s easy to wander off-topic that often prevents newbies finding the information they want quickly and easily (please see this rule). Please keep this thread on topic. If you’d like to discuss non-MoneySaving related topics please continue your discussion in The MoneySavers Arms or Discussion Time. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
:o ;)Sorry I am happy to discuss it in DT.

    Hi

I have been on Job Seekers Allowance for almost 4 and a half months and I’m struggling to find a job. The Jobcentre has promised me additional help and training if I’m still unemployed after 6 months.

The problem arose last week. I had booked a cheapo 2 week holiday in Tenerife a few weeks ago and I fly out in 3 weeks. I mentioned this last week when I signed on thinking that they would just give me a form to complete. However, I was told that if I went abroad I would have to make a completely new claim (i.e sign off and then sign on again) when I got back. The Advisor told me the reason for this was because I wouldn’t be available for work whilst I was away. Fair enough, rules are rules etc and I accepted this.

Now, I was quite willing to forfeit my two weeks JSA payment and sign back on again when I got back but where does that leave me regarding the additional help I was promised if I was still unemployed after 6 months? I’m worried I’m not going to get this now.

I have telephoned the Jobcentre for clarification and they have said I will be told about the ‘help and training’ options WHEN I make my new claim, but I want to know now before I go away!

Will my new claim REALLY be a new claim and put me ‘back to day one’ so the extra help wouldn’t be available for a further 6 months? This doesn’t seem fair!

    I’d really appreciate any thoughts.

(Please don’t tell me the unemployed shouldn’t be able to afford to go abroad:

    1) I have worked continuously since I left school and have some savings 2) This holiday was a cheaper option than holidaying for 2 weeks in a wet and windy Blackpool!)

Wading through the sniping..... Yes your claim will close and you will have to reclaim. The claims will link and so the date you will start to receive extra assistance will be 6 months from the original claim date.

:rolleyes:Most full time workers can't afford a holiday abroad, I bet they think the same about working day in day out must be soul destroying watching someone who you pay your taxes for to jump on a plane and get a nice holiday for a fortnight.

sometimes it is cheaper to go on holiday abroad than in the uk, especially if you get a late booking,

Some of the posts on here must be wind-up surely? Nobody can be this stupid, can they? Here's a good example of a one

There are huge signs up at airports now about benefit cheats and they are aimed at people such as yourself who are claiming JSA and yet holidaying abroad.

Benefits cheat? I've told them I'm going abroad and I'm signing off so won't be paid. How is that cheating? The system is benefiting by not having to pay ME.

Please don't say that it is easy to just hop on a plane to come back, it isnt that easy .

I've got NO intention of coming back! I've signed off so therefore answerable to no one.

Yes it is demoralising looking for a job but a job isnt just going to fall into your lap, you have to physically look for one and if that means registering with agencies, looking in the newspapers, looking online etc. etc then you will do that to get a job

Really, well I'd have never have thought of that. Registering with agencies - pure genius!

    - you cannot expect taxpayers to fork out for your holidays abroad.!

If I sign off then how can anyone be forking out? Puzzled.

Conversely, if I was to holiday in THIS COUNTRY then you could argue that the taxpayer is indeed paying for my holiday. So you've got you facts a little muddled, a bit back to front? Never mind.

Anyway, thanks to some of the posters for the constructive comments I've received (unlike ones like this!)

I have continuously worked from the age of 16 and am I'm now 51. I was made redundant and given a small redundancy package (statutory redundancy) which has paid for my (very cheap) holiday.

I have received £1,161 in benefits in my entire life. I have paid in literally tens of thousands of pounds into the system in tax and NI .

You know something. I don't feel one bit guilty about receiving my paltry £64.5 per week!! I can hold my head up high when I walk into the Jobcentre. And, I don't feel guilty about having a few day in the sun AT MY EXPENSE.

So try to get your facts right before making generalisations - not everyone who signs on is a work shy sponger

    Well said....

We went on holiday in August 2 weeks after hubby was made redundant, but, we actually booked the holiday in November '08.

Some comments made on here are very upsetting, hubby worked continuously for 30ish years since leaving school, paying in alot of money to the 'system', now when we need some help we are made to feel like criminals, not only by some people on this site but also some jobcentre workers.
    keep saving
