The person we bought our house from left a very charming magazine behind called "Bum biters"! It was from the 70's and there were pictures of people in paisley y-fronts biting other peoples bottoms, as the title suggests! Unfortunately they guy who came round to do our plumbing stole it!

We took the house number from our old house - may sound mad but it was a lovely one we bought in Italy on holiday. It now adorns our garden shed as decoration and a reminder of the holiday. There was a number on the door of the house anyway.

We got left a broken washer/drier in our flat - not best pleased as it was very heavy to get down 2 flights of stairs - obviously why they left it. We also found that the immersion heater wasn't working either, so no hot water. They kindly left us a broken glass/rusty chromed coffee table in the loft, so that was nice.

One useful thing we got left was an old filing cabinet in a shed several moves back. My husband uses it for storing tools and excess beer. It's in our shed - you'll know the one when you find it, it has number 80 in a very elegant design on the door!

My friend moved into a rented flat which friends of hers had occupied previously. She wasn't best pleased to find their dirty underwear and porno mags under the bed, which she asked them to collect. They never did and she is no longer friend's with them!

I found a gas fire in the loft ... there is no gas at the property so why keep it in the first place and then leave it behind????

I've just remembered, a previous move got delayed as the people we were buying from were buying a bungalow where a tree with a preservation order on it had gone from the garden!

  • Previous owners left a whole load of crap, it took me four weekends to fully empty the garage and take it all to the dump (it's not a small garage). Also random crap old furniture in the house. We'd not noticed when viewing, but almost all the wallpaper in the house was hung at an angle and had a strong pattern, making the furniture look wonky ! Ditto with the lounge carpet.

They'd promised to clean the house, and leave credit on the pre-pay gas & electricity meters. We moved in in the middle of December to find the place dirty, dark and freezing cold as they had maxed out the credit facility on both the meters. I had to go to the Co-Op and ask how they work. They explained it. Having no idea how much gas & electricty I'd need, I asked how much people normally put on. "You can put on £1, £5, £10..". Seriously, do some people buy electricity £1 at a time ?? I went with £20 each and we got through it rather quickly. Ended up putting on £50 a time until the leccy people came out to fit a proper meter.

They took a (really naff) planter from the front garden, which wasn't a problem, but they didn't take the soil that was in it, just dumped it on the lawn.

The final thing they left was a string of bailiffs who would call round quite regularly for the first few months. And the Police on one occasion, because the woman was due to appear in court and they'd not been able to contact her.

OTOH, the house we'd moved out of, we left all the fittings, blinds, even the TV because I'd built it into the wall and it was too much grief to remove ! My wife also made sure everything was spotless before we left. We're too nice
  • My friend moved into a house where all the light fittings and various other things had been removed, leaving bare wires from the ceiling and stuff. He made the vendors return it (as it was in the contract) only to throw it all and get newer better stuff.

Think he was just annoyed with the principal!
  • The people I bought from were lovely - they left me curtain poles, curtains, all the light fittings (which are all nice). But they'd done an awful lot of work on the house - a victorian terrace - including putting in a bathroom, and taking out the old outside loo (and using the space as storage). They used the old loo as a planter in the garden, and when they left they took that which I found a bit odd....

When I moved house as a kid in the 1990's we found an old victorian hat and 2 bowler hats hung on rafters in the loft, the house was an old semi built around 1912 so possibly left by the original occupants!!
