Have you tried making friends with them? I talk to all the cats who come into our garden (unless they're teasing Angus) and we don't really have a problem with them pooping.

I was doing for a while, until one of the youngest visitors decided he would quite like to live with us. I never fed any of them but for some reason this one in particular would be sat on my back doorstep peering in the kitchen (we have a full length glass door) every morning. As soon as the door was opened, he'd be between our legs and would run upstairs and try to jump on the bed. I'm not really a cat person so I wasn't too fond of him doing this, lol.

Even when our cats prefer to "go" outside we can still offer them a litter tray. The privacy of covered tray in a sheltered spot out of the wind and rain, with a decent quantity of litter in it is a much more attractive option than an open patch of garden with the wind blowing up your bum!

We can help our cats get the hang of it by lifting them into the tray when they first go outside after a sleep. Ok, it takes a bit of time and effort to get them used to it but at least we then know where they go, and it also gives us the chance to check on their waste, from a health point of view.

That's a really good idea and I wish every cat owner would do that. I suspect some/most (?) feel that a cat is by nature a wanderer and should be able to poop wherever and they wouldn't be too fussed about trying to litter train outside.

Shame really as I think a lot of people dont like cats purely because of the poop problem. If they were trained to go in their own back yard and owners dealt with their own cat's poo they way dog owners do (should ) then people would be more tolerant I think.

Oh bless his little paws, I feel sorry for kitties who are turfed out all day long when they just want to be curled up in the heat.

Some people get cats because they're easier to look after, of course they are... if you turf them out and throw them a bit of food twice a day, poor things.

I've been following this thread with interest, I'm so so glad that little Smudgy is making improvements, and hope he has a full recovery. As for the evil, evil man that did this, I'd wish multiple bad things to happen to him, but know that karma will catch up with him eventually. Could you group together with the neighbours who have had similar things happen to their cats, and go to to the police together? They'd probably be more likely to take you seriously and investigate it if you all reported it together, as it seems like much less of a coincidence! The mind boggles when you think how people can be so cruel, and then be so smug about it, my blood is boiling just thinking about it
D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't important

  • Hi,everybody
well just thought I would let you all know that smudgy STILL fine,I cant beleive it,the last time I spoke to vet a few days ago she really had convinced me that smudgy was not going to survive, and her kidneys would pack in a few days after coming of drip, but it was a week ago now when she had got poisoned and went to the vets, she has been home 5days now and is eating well ,she is playing with my daughter chasing her new scarf etc, jumping on to window sill with compleate strength and coordination,I really am starting to think things are going to be o.k,she seems so happy.
The vet would not let me give her the sub q fluid injections, she said she is two small, the yahoo group I joined all disagreed with this and said I should get a new vet,but ive phoned a different vet and they said the same as my vet,I think as the yahoo group is a USA group, there vets do things differently than over here, they did recommend some dietary food supplements though, and my vet agreed with this and ordered me some which I have been and bought for smudge today,so all in all things are far better than I thought they were going to be this time last week.
one last thing I feel I must say is a sincere thank you to all of you who have given such good advice and support, before I started this thread I had always been a little shy to really post much on the forum as there always seemed people just waiting for a chance to insult people and put them down,so I have often read other people's thread and would have liked to add a post but never had the convidence, but everybody on here has been so helpfull and just being able to talk about smudgy with you all has made this last week just that bit more bearable,so thank you all
  • really pleased for you tiannaleigh - will she need to go back for blood tests or anything to see how her kidneys are functioning?

The vet hasnt mentioned this, but I think it would be a good idea,so I could have a better idea whats going on,
Ill ring the vets on monday and ask them if they can take them again,it would be better than guessing every minute of the day,

Completely agree. 4 of my near neighbours have cats. Every one of them uses my garden as their toilet whilst their gardens are poo free.

I don't like it but I realise there's not much you can do, unfortunately. I've tried all the usual remedies from orange peel to bottles of water etc. I even got a metal cat with reflective eyes to sit in the garden as it was supposed to put other cats off.....not this lot, they would sit beside it and preen.

I would never dream of wishing ill will to any animal let alone physically harming it just because it's doing what nature intended. Animals are not malicious, it's such a shame that some people are.

Have you tried mulching with cocoa shells? They look a bit like small bark chips when down once watered in they stick together, suppress weed growth then rot down to feed the soil. Cats are reputedly not overly fond, certainly my garden was not disturbed when I used them and there were cats both sides.

great news tiannaleigh. might your vet give her Sub Q on a regular basis too? maybe she is too small for what the group suggested but ask your vet if she may benefit from some, and on what sort of regularity.

even when smudgie gets 100% better, stick around please, you seem such a lovely person and you obviously adore your cat..and we are all barmy about about pets here xxx
