Hi Tiannaleigh,
I'm so pleased to hear that Smudgey's on the mend. She's a very beautiful girl and she's incredibly lucky to have you looking after her. You said in your last post that she's keen to get outside but you're not going to let her. I hope you don't mind me asking you but do you think you'll ever feel happy letting her out again? I only ask because I'm in a similar situation. 4 cats in my road have recently been poisoned (mainly with anti freeze). It's not a big road (a dozen or so houses) so this does seem to be, at best, a very unfortunate coincidence. At worst, well that isn't really something I want to think about, the idea that a neighbour is doing this deliberately. Very luckily I was told about a couple of the deaths before the full picture emerged and I decided not to let my cat out anymore. There haven't been any more reported deaths for about 4 weeks but I still can't bring myself to let my cat out. My cat is a very active 10 year old who, for the most part, seems ok not playing out (we've bought him a load of new toys and try to get him playing chasing games for at least an hour of the day) but he does look longingly out the window sometimes and has been miaowing to get out a few times. As someone who has had the closest of close escapes, I'd be so interested to know what your plans are for Smudgey in the future.
I hope her recovery continues and wish you all the best.0 -

Forgive me if this is a daft suggestion (not being a cat owner) but would it not be possible to get one of those lightweight, long training type of leads you can get for puppies, just so the cat could go in the garden but no further. He could still get all the smells and feel of the things he likes outdoors but just couldn't move away.
Or is that just stupid?

No, it works well.
16 1/2 yr old renal kitty Angus loves his daily walks around the garden.
He was 15 and had never even worn a collar when I harness trained him. He has access to an outdoor run with split level shelving and lives a very happy little life. Because of being a house cat I was able to spot changes in his health and treat them early enough to extend his life. I'm also able to control his protein intake, without that he would probably be dead by now.The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -
Hey, so glad to hear Smudgy is doing well, kitties really are the bestest little fighters so hoping she pulls through with flying colours :A
On another note, have the police been round to that ******* of a neighbour, even if just to scare him off doing it to another cat? You have a lot of self restraint - if it were me I'd have been round that neighbours pronto and by the time I'd finished he'd wish he'd never been born!!Do good deeds and you could raise the curtain, do good deeds and you could really raise your life....0 -

Not a stupid idea at all, although the looks I've had from neighbours when I've been walking the cat about you'd think it was! I got a harness type lead, not a long one because he tends to try and leap up the fence and I have visions of him being strangled by it. We do go out most days but to be honest I'm not sure it doesn't distress him more, he seems desperate to be off exploring by himself. The good thing is it does get him fresh air and I think he enjoys doing 'the rounds' smelling plants, shed etc, but I don't know.0 -

ooh, jealous of the outdoor run! I'd love to have something like that for my cat - that really is the best of both worlds. I have to agree that the quality of attention you can give an indoor cat is a bonus too. Gorgeous boy, by the way!0 -

I have been so sorry for her all day,she has always loved going out ,and has been sat at the door looking at me pleading to be let out,at the moment she couldnt possible anyway because of her health, but I have been thinking what to do for the best,I dont want to ruin her quality of life, but would never want her to go through this again,so I think the post after your's is definately something I will be trying,it would be great to know she could only go as far as the bottom of my garden. ,0
