What with all the horror tales of this WGA, I've avoided downloading it, so far though I believe my XP is legit. I had no trouble downloading SP2 does that mean that MS accepted it was OK at that point. (XP came with 2nd hand PC)
Techie types please excuse if this is daft question from ME fogged non-techie.

problem with avoiding the updates is that they close weaknesses in xp that can be exploited by malicious web pages and attachments to emails

Mine had this problem ages ago and it would not accept the COA number of the side, went through the online verification and it's been fine since, even on the last update with the problems

Browntoa the reason why yours wouldnt go thought with the COA sticker on the side is because it was a differant Key on you machine just like all Packard Bells , advents, Emachines Etc , the COA key is differant on the Side of the machine than the one your machine comes with, easy get around instead of phoning, is to press Telephone Activate - then at the bottom Press Change Product Key, type in the one on the COA and restart this will now activate over the internet...

Sorry Misread your Post so doesnt apply , but still works for those who may have this problem
If it doesn't fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed replacement anyway

Did you contact MS when it happened ?

If so what did they do ?

I just phoned them when the WGA kicked off and said that I have a genuine install opf which I have and then gave them the 25 digit (I think 25 digits) code from the WGA tool and they said thats all in order and they asked me to type in a new code on my PC, quite simple really.

There is a utility available that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication 'features' in WindowsXP. You can disable all the known 'Suspicious' Functions in WindowsXP.

    Feedback please.

XPLite also does something similar. You can remove windows components, and the list is far more extensive than that offered under Add/Remove Windows components in the Control Panel. the good thing is that you can also add the components back again if you want to later on.

for example, you could remove Internet Explorer and use Mozilla firefox. This would shut down at least, if not more than, half the vulnerabilities out there at the moment, as many of them use IE to access your computer, as it's such a popular browser.

    Cheers and take care.

I wouldn't recommend removing IE unless you really know what you're doing. It's very central to Windows and a certain way of screwing things up.

On the topic of removing Windows components. Have a look at nLite.

You can basically build your own Windows disc. On mine I've included all the latest service packs and update, removed unecessary components, and set common apps like QuickTime Alternative to install when Windows installs.

I basically stripped my Windows cd down from over 500mb to about 300mb with all the latest stuff, and lots settings already done.

    Remove the WGA nag

You will still get the WGA validation tool KB892130 download to check if you have genuine XP in order to get the updates.

I just bought a used laptop off ebay that had XP pre-loaded by HP, but it came up as failing validation, so I changed product key to the COA on the bottom of the laptop with the key update tool. It's worked cos I've just downloaded SP2 and am now getting automatic updates.
