Just recently bought my PC from PC World and I too have had this notice, it also said you must ' get genuine now' I pressed that and all seems fine.

A lot of the time its just a notifucation asking you to Validate XP and not saying XP is invalid/illegal, both two very different things.

basically the solution is as you've mentioned pick the updates you want yourself, or try to get MS to validate your OS .

    Seems the way to go.

Funny how it seems to be legit copies of XP from DELL, TIME and PC World that have been affected.
So far the Toshiba and Acer laptops are fine and the 3 home built systems with OEM copies are also ok.

If it is a legit copy from Dell you should go back to Dell as they may not be paying their OS Licence, if yougo to MS they will only tell you to go back to the retailer which is perfectly correct, If Dell do not or cannot rectify the problem then go back to MS and see Dell get a nice big fine. :)

And picking bits of updates is not the way to go as some updates are integral to other updates or libraries, You would take an age to tell which one ones you really dont need and then you may need them anyway.

Not being used to the mechanics of computers, strangelly enough it didn't worry me too much as I new the PC was brabd new. I imagine though for very new users it would be very worrying indeed, also all the Microsoft updates are confusing when you've just had a new PC.

Yep they can be, thats why the average or novice user will just let them run in the background which is totally fine. :)

ISTR that most big companies deploy a slipstreamed image of the chosen OS including their usual drivers, updates and other preinstalled rubbish. So it seems reasonable as to this being the reason why some people with Dell computers are falling foul of this check.

    (Removed) Serious error!

Btw, running 4 copies of XP Home, 2 copies of XP Pro all verified.
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

What I do find quite ironic however, is the moderator 'sra' if I remember correctly at the start of this thread actively admitting she is using a stolen.
