ABH wrote:What I do find quite ironic however, is the moderator 'sra' if I remember correctly at the start of this thread actively admitting she is using a stolen, illicitly aquired non legit in the eyes of microsoft version of the windows OS. Then actively looking for a 'wordaround' to circumvent the protection on the software. However, should someone dare to mention where to get cheap mp3's from. She edits it  I can't help thinking theres a double standard in force
software piracy is apparantly a crime, were as buying cheap mp3's is not. Just my mini rant.
- sra is a He not a She
- I'm a Board Guide not a moderator - a very important distinctions as I don't deal with abuse
- Anything I delete is still seen by the Forum Team so if I did do anything like that Forum Team would know about it.
- If you look through my previous posts you'll see i've mentioned several times that I use Windows 2000 - If I were going to pirate then why would I steal an old system :rotfl:
- I already know how to bypass XP validation because I keep coming accross ways on the techie sites I use - If I were pirating I wouldn't need to ask here

Well what can I say, when I originally wrote I checked and rechecked what I saw before constructing the post. However, now it does indeed look different. So my mistake; I offer you my most sincere and profound appologies, Sir! ('Sir' in recognition of your gender). It just goes to show, if I can make mistakes like this sober, imagine how catastrphic they could be when drunk
I grit my teeth and bend over for an honest to goodness '!!! whoopin', I deserve it!It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
I've been away for a couple of weeks and left my computers completely disconnected from the net, router switched off. Yesterday when I booted up my other computer I got a message saying various updates were required etc, usual sort of stuff which I let run. When I logged out last night it gave me a message saying it needed to install some stuff, before it would switch itself off, again usual looking messages. A couple of hours later I noticed it was still sitting on installing update 1 of 1 and it looked as though nothing was happening so I turned the computer off.
This morning switching back on again I've had a message saying that my Windows software isn't genuine (it is, it's the stuff which came on the machine from PC world 6 months ago) and that I won't be receiving any more updates and it's giving me the option to Get the genuine software or sort later, which I picked.
At the moment Norton is running a full system scan, but as you can imagine, I'm pretty concerned. Does anybody have some suggestions?
Thanks so much.
Update on this, Norton didn't find anything, I've done a reboot and didn't get the error message again. Does this suggest the first time was a glitch or do I have something I should be worried about?Make £2025 in 2025

Just goto windows update and do it again.
No biggie, if your ops key is kosher then you have zilch to worry about.0 -

If you don't get upto date, your system could become a zombie.
It could be used by certain people to store warez on, to do dos attacks and send spam emails.
You machine could become a server, your isp could get serious complaints and you could end up being arrested.
When you buy a ops, you are also entitled to support and future updates, why give that up?0 -
I interupted my install of wga file and it reported not genuine, just re boot the system and it should attempt to re install and will work ok then.0

Hi all
I'm the poster that started this thread, so please let me thank everyone for their advice and patience.
Like many people I know a bit about PCs, but it's evident by the advice given in this thread I don't know that much! I'm sure the windows GAN popping up on PCs did a good job of scaring the average PC user - i.e. me.
Can I please ask another question? Since the GAN download, i've set my automatic updates to 'notify me but don't automatically download or install them', and today there's a little yellow shield in the bottom right of my screen (task bar-ish?) saying updates are ready for my computer, click to download. The last update I got was what prompted me to start this thread, so I am unsure what to do. If I download it could be further scarey GAN stuff or a genuine update. If I don't download will it download/install on shutdown or startup?? Is there a way of seeing what update it is?
Apologies if this has been posted somewhere else and i've missed it. As I said in my first post, my PC is my lifeline - can anyone lend me a magic wand so I can make all this pants go away????
Many thanks in anticipation.
