Thank you Soolin, for just proving to most of the readers on this thread, how absolutely stupid and ignorant you are.

I honestly couldn't have done better myself.

You are of course perfectly entitled to your opinion but I can't see why you are getting so cross just because I can sell where apparently no one else can manage to do so, surely that is capitalism at its best?

I had naively thought that there were a lot of sellers making a nice little profit and not just me but you obviously think I am unique.

I think you're getting a bit confused Soolin - eBay isn't an auction site anymore either. Look at the book listings: similar prices, free postage, buyitnow.
    Where's the auction?

The people who want to auction stuff are finding it isn't financially viable anymore, they come, lose money and go again.
Ebay as an auction site is doing very well for me. There has been a move to more fixed prices but the auction side is still there and alive and thriving.

Congratulations for bringing Chairman Mao into a debate, very amusing;)

  • What on earth would make you think I was cross????
    Actually I'm sat here laughing.

Let's face facts, we don't know how much you make, we don't even know if you really sell on eBay, this is a forum after all.
I mean, I've read on a couple of occasions that you haven't managed to make anything on eBid in years - not that good there, are you. Surely a genius like you could draw some of your customers to eBid - two maybe, even one ...?
No, you failure you. Good job we're not talking about survival of the fittest on eBid - you're no good.

All we get is you spouting the same old thing and being extremely selective in the issues you respond to and then throw in a broad base statement like 'other people make money.'
Well, yeah, but not as many as there used to be and a lot of those are very unhappy. It's a downward spiral - but as long as you're okay that's just fine. You are safe in the knowledge you are a boost to the economy ... (only the economy isn't just about you ... it's an interdependant thing, but ssshhh, don't tell anybody)

I wonder why I get the picture in my brain of some spoiled little brat screaming and stamping her feet. mmm wonder why?

By the way as Steve says its only an internet forum its not life and Death
  • Internet purchases require a element of trust, or a element of saftey. Savvy buyers will only buy where they are protected, ebay offers that protection. Ebid does not.

You can bleat all you like, but that is about the long and short of it. They may not realise it now- buying occasional things from the odd independant shop, ebid etc. but if these ebay competitors get big they will attract scam artists who will rip people off with little comeback.

Most of our buyers are new buyers anyway (and yes, we are making money out of it- not as much as we'd like, but that's because it is time consuming rather than public demand) and they must be coming from somewhere
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p
  • What, that one person responded after you posted something twice? Not really a gang mentality :p

I prefer to think that they had thought about it and realised that it could be wrong - but you think your way and I will think mine - as I have said I tend not to lose much sleep over anything silly posted on these boards ( :A )
As Martin says - please be nice - there is no such thing as a stupid question ! ;)

  • I think eBay is doing right here because its good for the buyer and this policy will restrict the fake users and sellers!

The bottom line is that eBay introduced the free P+P to increase their own revenue - that's it. No other sites feel it necessary to do this unless you have a minimum spend - why?
Forgotten about Play, have we? :p

Maybe ebay are doing it to get more money, but so what. They're a business, wouldn't you do the same. I suppose you think none of the extra revenue they'll get will be put back into the site, and that all the changes they make, the new servers they use (because they keep getting clogged with 99p crap with extortionate P+P), the staff they hire etc should all stay the same price. Everything's more expensive now, ebay's no different.

The simple fact is, the vast majority of people only see the bad things from companies like ebay.

Does anyone mention free listings for private sellers? No, despite the fact it saves you 10p
Does anyone mention free gallery picture? No, that's a saving of 15p.

If you don't like ebay, don't use it. You're not forced to, why don't you try selling on a car boot to a couple of hundred people. Then you might see ebay's worth the fees (which incedentally: cheaper than Amazon's) for the sheer amount of potential buyers.

It'll get rid of a lot of the Chinese sellers as well.

(note I am not using multi quote for a reason-honestly!)

You mention other sites and I think that is a bit of a red herring as those sites have existed for a long while

I am a little puzzled about the red herring? I sell on ebay, using only auction, and I also joined ebid some time ago, added some stuff and left them there, checking back each day to see nothing sold, just like you. Thinking it would be like ebay used to be, where all you had to do was list the item. But now, unlike others on here, I am finding the ebay I knew as an auction site is dying and is no longer what ebay used to be. If I stay there, then I suspect I will struggle this christmas, when this should be our busiest period. But now by time you take off the price of the products, and the ebay/paypal cut, and the fact the customers are no longer on ebay, then Then I have to start looking elsewhere, or the government will start to think I am fiddling my taxes, they are getting so little from me at the moment. So I am looking at those alternatives, as looking through their forums, and you see a lot of people that are selling stuff, as they are probably buying from each other, the same as they used to buy from each other on ebay and from people others like you and me. So at the moment I am looking through the advice on their forums, to see why they are selling on the alternatives, rather than trying to fix my ebay sales, as I just do not have the heart for ebay any longer. That was my point, as that should be the worry if you sell on ebay at the moment, as I can't see it getting any better and the fact the alternatives are growing so fast in such a short time, has to be having an affect on ebay sales, or at least they seem to be having an affect on my ebay sales, where our products are selling for the start price and if you raise the start price, all you end up with is no guarantee of a sale and a higher fee. I see people on the alternatives getting sales of the stuff I sell, so it really does look as if you are loosing another customer, as I will also buy in the same place I sell.
