    Who's he?
  • Just had our 4th call since Monday (when the phone line was connected). Chap on the other end correctly had our family name, but the details he had fell over after that. I've been with my wife now for 23 years and I've NEVER been able to talk over her so successfully! In the end I took over the call and pointed out that if he wasn't able to get our details removed, I'd contact the Info commissioner, and have them do it. 15 minutes so far and no recall.
  • I've had 2 of these calls this week.
First was 19:50 last night (16th) when I was called, and then rung back by them to ask the same questions, each time being hung up on when I didn't give answers they liked.

Today I got another call, asking for someone else, who even when I pointed out I'm a "miss", kept calling me sir, and then told me I should learn to speak English properly, to learn some respect, and to stop being rude!
  • I've just had a call from them - quite pleasant and all that, but unwanted. I'll report them to the TPS. It's irrelevant to me where the caller is based or what they sound like. In all likelihood, the person employing them is white, arrogant and drives a BMW on the fast lane of the motorway whether or not they are overtaking anyone and if anyone has the temerity to occupy said lane already, they will come right up your backside in order to let you know that you are in their lane. Either that or they wish to know where your shirt was purchased. They employ people from afar as they are cheap(er) and pay for the BMW, rather than an Audi.

I'm a bit annoyed with myself though for answering with a polite hello. These may have been talked about elsewhere, but here are some alternative responses I use.

The Takeaway (use type of food and accent to taste)

    Me: Rafa's Pizza

Them: Hello is Mr X there.

Me: No, no, no. Pizza shop; we sell pizza. You want pizza?

    Them: Errrrrr.....

Me: Our Seafood Special is on offer

Usually they hang up by now, but I would really like to have a long conversation using this method. Friends and family are aware that I answer like this sometimes and if it's someone who I wish to speak to but don't know me, a simple explanation as to why I do so is easily understood and a good icebreaker.

The Office (if I have music on)

    Me: Hello

    Them: Is Mr X there?

    Me: Hold the line please

Put the phone next to the speaker. They're paying for the call. Works best with Frank Zappa or raggamuffin style reggae.

I'm sure there's more (I saw one on here where you answer questions with questions) and I'd love to hear them so I can vary my approach. I think the thing is not to get wound up by cold calling but have a little fun instead.;)

I too have had endless calls from "Energy Grant Advisors"

I too am registered (more than 10 years) with TPS

When I first tried to report them to the TPS I found I could not without a valid phone number, so I started asking these people for a number I could call them back on, usually they just hung up when I asked.

Eventually I got a number, it was an 01903 number (Worthing)

I called it back to test it and it rang to an overseas dial tone, and when answered I asked if that was Energy Grant Advisor and and the recipient hung up on me.

I reported them to TPS and got a standard response that they could not do anything because the company's details could not be properly established.

Countless contributors here have also reported them to TPS, and there is indeed a web-site (as others have found), the TPS is toothless in my opinion, easy to evade.

So just who are these people and how do we stop those nuisance calls!

I reported them to the TPS

Sorry - as a newbie I'm lot allowed to post links - maybe someone better qualified could do so.
  • yes unfortunately my boyfriend put my ex directory phone number on a website and ever since i have been bombarded with unwanted sales calls. this guy today was calling from the grant advisory service and asking me what type of property I live in. I asked for a number to call them back and he blatantly made it up off the top of his head 090 333 7004 saying my energy company had passed my details over to give me £300 in savings for free insulation. I am very skeptical if they want me to have that why dont they recommend the company and ask me if I want this service.
No thanks!! stop ringing argh ....
  • where all the ex-salespeople from SAS FIRE AND SECURITY went to after that company was wound up.

Those at the Energy Grant Advisory Ripoff seem to use the same pathetic tactics of giving out false call-back numbers, pretending to be "Government Approved", claiming that they are not subject to TPS rules and so forth.
I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.

I just had a call from an Asian guy who wanted to do a survey about home insurance, told him renewal was in 12 months and just paid next to nothing. Please send me quotes by post as I will not respond to phone sales. At least I may get 12 months peace from him.
As regards insulation I tell them I get every benefit imaginable and book an appointment. Last bloke travelled 150 miles to be told I now had a job, was no longer confined to a wheelchair and if they called again I would prosecute his company in the event of an accident as they woke me when I was on nights. I am still waiting for a call from a solicitor offering no win no fee!

Best revenge ever was being called by an Englishman selling windows. He had called from his home and not withheld his number. I called him at 3am as I was on nights, offering to fix his fridge. He replied there was nothing wrong with it, I retorted that there was nothing wrong with my windows.

Then there was the saleswoman I couldn't convince a conservatory wouldn't work with a first floor flat. Spent 10 minutes trying to educate her about the product she was selling.
When will be be able to stop these calls, I'm ex-directory, registered with TPS and if I do give out my number I always tick the privacy box. Someone is ignoring this and selling our details on.
