what about people who had wanted to buy them for THEIR children????? what are you going to say to their dissapointed faces........ "sorry but you're not special enough!"?

personally Harrods should sell them to those that have been promised.
They can then donate ALL the money raised (or toy equivalent) to the charities.

So WHAT if people sell them on???? If I could I would........ I would then use the huge profit I would make to put on my own debts to make my own sons life better.

Sorry - and I am anticipating a stabbing here - but MY son will ALWAYS be a higher priority to ME then anyone elses!! Thats not to say I don't feel for other children and their situations but they are not MY first priority!!

Totally agree with you chickywiggle. Yes it's a lovely thing they're doing, but it's bad business sense to let people order one and then leave them confused as to whether they're getting one at all. An adult may understand that it's a great thing they're doing but to a child they're just going to be confused why they had one on it's way one minute, and now they can't have one.

All I'm saying is don't bite people's heads off because they are justified in being disappointed. Harrod's should have given them all to charity in the first place as they have broken a contract in not giving them to people who bought them in good faith, and now have to source a present elsewhere.
  • This week the much-awaited Meerkat Aleksandr Orlov arrives at Harrods.
This was a limited-edition toy, based on the comparethemarket.com television advertisements, to which Harrods had worldwide exclusive rights.
It proved to be the most popular toy this Christmas, and the store has been delighted with inquiries from customers all over the world wanting to purchase one.
Due to this high level of demand, the Chairman of Harrods, Mohamed Al Fayed, decided that it was going to be impossible to satisfy everyone, and has come up with a unique solution.
Instead of selling the Meerkat, which was priced at £19.95, the store will donate all of them to a selection of children’s charities. These charities will be Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, The Evelina Children’s Hospital, Chase Hospice Care for Children, Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity and The Shooting Star Hospice.
Katharine Witty, Group Director of Public Relations, said: “The Meerkat craze has gone global. We have had hundreds of thousands of inquiries, and with the limited number we had to sell, so many customers were going to be disappointed.
“The Chairman decided that the fairest solution was to donate them all to charity. We are sure that the children will appreciate this incredible gift, and we trust that our customers will support this generous gesture to those most in need.”
Antonia Dalmahoy, Director of Corporate Partnerships, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity said: “This is a wonderful surprise for our children at Christmas, and we’re very grateful to Harrods.”
Harrods will not be giving any interviews or issuing any further statements.

well at least we defo know now, wont be getting one at all. good idea harrods badly implemented.

why go to the bother of a huge press launch at london zoo etc... have a shop assistant put them on the shelf for the 2nd press launch.

then take everyones contact details, then call them 6 weeks later and say you have defo got one.

then announce you are giving them to charity.

i have just ordered the meerkat movie if anyone else wants anything meerkat related for a xmas pressie. cheapest is hmv at 6,49
  • An idea for kids (or kidults!) Zoo's do adoptions of their animals, Paignton and Marwell (local ones (ish) for me!) let you adopt their Meerkats for about £25-50. I think Chester and Chessington do it too!

Just for the record I didn't order one (or even try too) before anyone acuses me of being jealous etc.

Does this sound extremely selfish! As it stands your son, has many many more xmas' to come!! For some children this will be their last christmas! I would prefer to see their faces lit up over xmas rather than MY childrens.
DFW Nerd #awaiting number - Proud to be dealing with my debts!

Dont cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

  • A contract is any promise or set of promises made by one party to another for the breach of which the law provides a remedy. The promise or promises may be express (either written or oral) or may be implied from circumstances.

I do get where your coming from but Im sure as no monies exchanged hands and no one has been left (financially) disadvantaged Harrods wont have broken any contract law, maybe Im wrong but thats how I understood it.

On another same but different angle how about the Meerkats that have been offered as prizes the last weeks as prizes, think it was the Sun or some newspaper ???
