  • My objction is that these children's parents think children in this situation are more impotant then any other child in the world and feel it perfectly acceptable 'normal' children should go without to prove a point that they are healthy.

How offensive. Where did you get such an idea from?
  • I am sorry, but Harrods promised 5000 of these and 5000 people bothered to be lucky enough to be on the list.

i do not accept that these are now to be given away to charity. I had no intention of resale but wanted something limited and unique.

the debate on here about kids who are "not special" should thank their lucky stars they are not disabled is utter tripe. It doesnt mean that people who have been promised an item should have to give it up to a child who is ill. I would have rather Harrods asked for an extra £10 to charity. Money helps charities a lot more than stuffed toys.

To be perfectly honest - I do not agree with Harrods policy of giving the meerkats to charity. I honestly believe they should have given them as originally promised to their customers even if it means they cannot fulfill all the orders. I would rather Harrods made a donation to GOSH or other charities as something they wanted to do with the best intentions rather than as a result of a mistake and yes it makes people feel bad and uncomfortable to moan when the meerkats are now going to charity rather than their children and that should not be the case..

Believe me from my earlier post - a meerkat is of no concern to me and in the six years of being under GOSH we have never received any gifts etc.. and wouldn't expect to just because your child is ill.

Having said all of that - I do think if you have your health you should thank your lucky stars - I do every day!! Also I am not in a contest whose child is more special - in fact the whole point is that I would rather my child was not special as that in our case would mean he could live a normal life.

No child should have been disappointed - yet I do hope the charities make some money from the meerkats if they get them - funding for our particular charity/illness within the GOSH childrens charity has meant children with my son's condition now have three beds on a ward instead of one. It means they have been able to employ a research fellow for a year it means that they can perform scans on a pancreas that they could never have done before and as a result have saved lives.

Please remember Quidco!! - I always forget to put that in my posts :o - but not any more :A

but they were given to the charities to be given as a xmas present/gift not to be sold on to raise money. If that was the case why didnt harrods sell them to customers and give all the money to the charity???
  • Hi, I've just beeen on Harrods website and there are going to be alot of disappointed people, as Boss of Harrods has decided to donate all meerkats to childrens charities as there was such high demand. I am one of those people has it was going to be a present for my 3 year old son. I think more stock should be made available.

I don't agree with Harrods giving them away if they were already promised to a list of people, but I think I'd feel better if the toys were actually going to the sick children.

What will inevitably happen is that they will end up being sold on ebay to raise money for the charity instead, meaning that you can get one if you've got rich parents, but not if you've only got the £19.95 :(
  • Jeez honestly the way some of you are chucking the toys out of the pram I think the bl**dy meerkat is for you not your kids!

Do you seriously think Harrods are going to care about 5000 narked customers half of which have probably never stepped foot in Harrods and just going to wap it straight on Ebay- most people will be thinking what a fantastic jesture! Give it time the contrat will be dizzolved and every Sunday market will be unundated with the blinkin things- 20 years on there'll be millions of meerkats in lofts all over the country.

Do you seriously think the absnce of a meekat is going to ruin your kids Christmas- maybe you should remember the meaning of Christmas.

My daughter is the most precious thing in the world to me I'd give her the world but kids need to learn they can't always get what you want.

I understand the disapointment but I think to start debating the 'specialness; of children is plain wrong. I look at me dd every day and thank god she's healthy.

Merry Christmas and well done Harrods

Lets be fair - In the eyes of Harrods!

I could let the public buy these and get there pockets lined when they go on ebay or i could give them all to charity for them to put on ebay give to children and line there pockets! I know what i would choose :) x

  • Exactly Lolly- one PP has even posted a link of someone who had reserved 2 and put one on Ebay with starting bid at £100.

Bad business sense.... hmmmmm I'd let Mr Fayed decide that- last time I checked he was pretty bloody successful- sure he'll make his £100k back in about 48hours!
