Alias. How awful, you must feel really betrayed. What a selfish man. Big hugs.0

Jo - I think you need to sit down and tell your OH how you feel. I mean is he basically suggesting the last 13 years have been a waste of time? That I think would cut me to the core. Does he know you've read the post?
In an ideal world we'd all love to please ourselves but life is a compromise some of the time - that's why it's a partnership, give and take.

Daisy, can I pick your brains? I've been a regular gym goer for some time but I need to shake things up a bit cardio wise. I tend to do half an hour on the machines, usually split in two - 15 mins on bike or rower, then 15 mins on crosstrainer or walking up hill. I was interested in the interval idea nad tried it out yesterday - but i notice that my heart rate is always more elevated than the machines suggest it should be for someone of my age (I'm 39). They say that 80% of my max is 144, but at 144 I just don't feel like anything much is happening. I need to be in the mid to late 150s before I really feel like I'm working, and when I do the couch-to-5k my rate goes up to 180-something on the running bits. That feels like really hard work, but it's only brief.
I suppose my question is, should I ignore what the machines say and go by how I feel? And what intervals should I put into my cardio program. Yesterday I just did a minute of hard work every now and again, is that OK? Or should it be more specific?
Thanks!
ok what we tell ppl about the heart rate on the machines where i work is this - that they are not wholly accurate - if your hands are too sweaty they dont read if someone next to you is wearing a HRM they can pick up that persons HR not your own etc etc
if you do wear a HRM and/or a strap then that will be more efficient
however we also say its down to a bit of common sense too
if you are a relatively fit and healthy individula and the machine starts beeping high heart rate at you then think about how you feel - any pain anywhere esp chest can you do the talk test whats your colour like etc etc if your just feeling like your working hard then i tell ppl to carry on but thats a choice only you can make
one thing we get told alot on training courses is look around at the gym users - how many ppl honestly look like they are working really hard - working up a sweat etc etc - in reality not that many ppl that use a gym look like that esp ladies but unless you work hard your not going to get results
i personally would be making the intervals more specific - it doesnt matter to begin with how long the recovery intervals are they could be 3 or 4 mins even but make a mental note - not just to do them whenever or as and when
this way and it helps you do actually do them if its your mind - bit like the when doing the C25K - you really dont think you can do another interval but because this voice in your ear says run then you do !!! also it gives you a mark point to plot your progression - if you started at 4 mins recoveries after a while you will begin to recover quicker and be waiting for the next interval then you can drop to 3.30 then to 3 etc etc ?
hope all this makes sense and helps

thats great that you tried it !! how did you feel whilst doing it and afterwards ? one thing to be aware of - you will burn less calories in the workout than a steady rate longer workout but just keep in mind the post calorie burn is better
if you can do it for a few weeks to see any progression or difference to your fitness levels that would be great :T:j MFi3 wannabee :j
