Daisy, can I pick your brains? I've been a regular gym goer for some time but I need to shake things up a bit cardio wise. I tend to do half an hour on the machines, usually split in two - 15 mins on bike or rower, then 15 mins on crosstrainer or walking up hill. I was interested in the interval idea nad tried it out yesterday - but i notice that my heart rate is always more elevated than the machines suggest it should be for someone of my age (I'm 39). They say that 80% of my max is 144, but at 144 I just don't feel like anything much is happening. I need to be in the mid to late 150s before I really feel like I'm working, and when I do the couch-to-5k my rate goes up to 180-something on the running bits. That feels like really hard work, but it's only brief.

I suppose my question is, should I ignore what the machines say and go by how I feel? And what intervals should I put into my cardio program. Yesterday I just did a minute of hard work every now and again, is that OK? Or should it be more specific?

    Thanks!

Hmmmmm, wondering if this thread should be re-named The General Diet, Exercise & Emotional Support Thread :rotfl:

Well done to all those who are getting out there & giving the gym a go. I'm definitely in need of the stamina & muscle tone that alias mentioned so I'll be following everyone's progress with interest

ruby, I do soooooooo agree with what you wrote about the benefits of walking, I love it :T I know it helps with stamina/muscle tone as well & I really need to get back into going for a good brisk walk every day as I'm sure I would notice a difference, physically & mentally.

Anyway, I've been to H&B today & bought the vanilla version of their protein shake for £12.49, & no dithering either, I just went in & got it!! :rotfl: Will hopefully be starting on them tomorrow. Plan on having one for brekkie & one for lunch, with a low-gi or low-carb evening meal, undecided which one to go for atm, I suppose it depends how full I feel with the shakes??

Btw, Eric did a very interesting post on the low-carb thread earlier, about how much water you 'should' be drinking. Worth a look.

See you later, hope everyone having a good day

Blimey. I just went to my yoga class, and did my first ever headstand. Still can't quite believe it. It was against the wall, with the help of a partner to balance me getting up there, but.... blimey. Not done one of them since I was about 8. I dread to think what my flabby belly looked like upside down, but the whole thing actually felt really nice. Luckily I was partnered with a girl who is about the same size as me or it would have been horribly embarrassing.

Hi guys.Spent yesterday getting some sports stuff, I realised I only had trainers and nothing else so had to go get suitable gym kit. Not the easiest task when you're bigger than a size 10-12 or 14-16! There were a few sports places in the city nearest to us but they obviously cater more for fitter/thinner people. :o

I ended up going round the 'normal' shops and got some stuff out of M&S eventually. The shops are full of really nice clothes just now, I swung between feeling really depressed that I wouldn't be wearing them and really determined that I would! :undecided By the time I got home, I wasn't sure how I felt anymore, lol.

Anyway, I'm trying again now. Yesterday was my first day back on icing so it's back to the usual 4 days of feeling crap until things kick in properly. I'm well equipped with loads of water and and my bottles of vits.

Thanks for all the exercise advice. I have been walking a fair bit lately so that's gotta help but I have no stamina and no muscle tone to speak of so I really need the gym I think. I'm sure if I felt happier with me, I'd feel happier with life too iyswim.

Daisy I wish you lived near me....don't fancy moving I suppose? :D

*waves to all, have a good one*

I had a nightmare trying to find gym clothes at first ( well any clothes as I was a size 24 :o) I did get some eventually in M+S
I went recently as my gym stuff was too big for me :T and now am in a size 18 ( still big I know but psychologically it feels great buying smaller stuff)
I also bought some stuff from per una in the sale I didnt try it it on and it fits :j I have never been able to buy off the peg before its a fabulous feeling
now I just need to get back to losing weight again

    3 choices

    1) Carry on living the lie

    2) Kick the !!!! out!

    3) Try to discuss the issues and resolve them

very difficult situation, probably best to get advice from the girls :p

Oh alias what a horrible thing for you to read, I feel for you, I would be fuming if I read that from my OH, men always think they have the raw deal in life (no offence eric), but it will be a case of 'don't know what you have got until it's gone' so I hope he is careful otherwise he may find himself quoting that saying an awful lot in the future.:kisses3:

Tea later will be good old salad, not sure what to have on it yet and i can`t be @rsed to get back up off the sofa to have a look. I need a nap for about an hour and then i shall start to feel human again.

im perfect :D well apart from being the size of a blue whale ...

i don't think i have a raw deal, i think of SWMBO all the time, i tell her i love her all the time, i do things for her, i cook, i clean, i do the shopping with her, i look after her when shes ill, i surprise her with things (she lost her Raymond Weil watch recently and was very upset so i got her a new one without her knowing :)), its a partnership we do it together.

we are not all the same :)
