can anyone recommend a good dishwasher - or ones to stay away from...

We have had an AEG dishwasher for about 10 years. It hasn't dated, it's very quiet, we've had one repair on it which cost £55 about 1 year ago. The repairman said that AEG are one of the best brands and the one they get the fewest call-outs about - plus they are worth repairing.0

killmymortgage wrote:HI,
I am suprised that there are not more comments about Neff dishwashers on here. Mine is over 10 years old and still going strong. I have had no problems with it whatsoever and it has never been serviced. I just give it a clean out occasionally with the finish dishwasher cleaner.
The only problem with Neff dishwashers (and possibly other items) is the cost of getting them repaired, Neff charge an arm and a leg just to come and see. My friendly repair man tells me that they are a good make but that he can't fix all of the possible problems due to the cost of Neff's diagnostic equipment and that spare parts are expensive.
If anyone wants a washing machine/dishwasher etc repairman in the Wellingborough/Rushden area, then I am more than happy to pm on the details, I've saved a fortune and have been given no reason not to trust his judgement.
(MOD: Am I allowed to do this here?)killmymortgage wrote:I also had no problems with my Neff oven, hob or extractor fan in over 10 years. That was until my husband burnt that side of the kitchen down last month. Just had a new neff oven and hob refitted courtesy of the insurers.
I also have a Neff hob and oven. One of the gas rings has locked and is un-repairable but apart from that, the rest is fine.
No real problems with the oven but I personally don't like it very much.
(I suppose I had better declare here that I prefer Gas).
I don't like the way the shelves slot in. If I pull them out slightly to view the contents of the dishes, then the shelf has a tendency to tip forward and everything slides out into my face!! I also don't find that it cooks very evenly either - this may be a problem for other makes/models of electric fans but I don't have any other experience.
I would also recommend Which, but if you can't get a free trial on line, your local library should hold the full edition of Which.
Thanks for that, I hadn't got as far as considering water usage and any excuse to justify using it is good news!;)killmymortgage wrote:If you've got a water meter, you might be interested to see how much water the different dishwashers use. Some of the new dishwashers are more efficient than washing up by hand for a full load! Are you sure about that? I threw away my gas hob for that reason, only to discover that it is possible to dismantle the valves and grease them.full-time-mum wrote:One of the gas rings has locked and is un-repairableTime is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
Well he's hardly likely to say "why are you wasting your money calling me out to repair this heap of junk?" is he? :rolleyes:scottishlizzie wrote:The repairman said that AEG are one of the best brands and the one they get the fewest call-outs about - plus they are worth repairing.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -

That reminds me of a Hoover repair man, fixing the washing machine for the umpty third time (still under warranty !).
I said to him, "do you get a lot of trouble with this particular machine" - he thought for a moment and said, " well of course you must remember, I only see the ones that go wrong".
He should have been a politician - he answered my question but told me absolutely nothing !!
I have never bought any thing from Hoover since.0 -
Morning all!
Just finished mopping out my kitchen, after my very old Hotpoint dishwasher decided to die on me at 1 in the morning. Of course this meant rather than just 'not working' it decides to stop on the 'fill with water' part of the cycle. luckily for once I was still pottering about in the kitchen a while after I had switched it on, so noticed the water suddenly pouring out of the door !!
Anyway, did a quick hunt on good old MSE, and came up trumps with all your excellent, and quite recent advice.:T
Must admit from personal experience I don't think you can beat going into stores to actually see and try the equipment - practical things such as how heavy the door is, size of trays etc.
Other thing I will look for this time is noise level. Mine is 18 yrs old, and I cannot make a phone call or listen to tv if d/washer is running. Comparisons of energy ratings and water consumptions are very useful, but I suppose price consideration is down to, do I spend £250 - £300 and hope for 5-8 yrs of use, or pay over £700, and hope for double this ?
Many thanks again for all the posts.;)0 -
I am just getting rid of a Bosch dishwasher that is under 3 years old. The reason-it is now on it's second major breakdown, and the parts are substantially more expensive than most other makes, I have been told around 2-3 times the cost. It would be useful to know befoe buying what the cost of the parts is likely to be if you do get a rogue machine.0

That's the sort of thing you should get repaired for free as it's expected to last that long.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

I had no end of problems with an Arriston. So much so that they replaced it for me with a different model. Unfortunately I've had problems with the new too but they wouldn't change this one. I think really it is luck of the draw. I say no to Arriston but the next poster may have an opinion of them being reliable to the point they would replace with another Arriston in years to come.
I did have a Service dishwasher which lasted me at lest 10 years, but that is about 20 years ago. I don't know if Service is still trading.Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
