can anyone recommend a good dishwasher - or ones to stay away from...

We are doing new kitchen which includes fitting a new freestanding dishwasher. Was looking into a beautiful Fisher & Paykel dishdrawer (very expensive but gorgeous) but have read a lot of bad reviews. Also like the 50s style retro SMEG dishwasher - but thats also expensive.

There seem to be loads in the £250 - £350 bracket that seem reasonable but they all seem the same to me - what features should I be looking for, good manufacturers etc. Last dishwasher we had was a Bosch and it was ok (not always brilliantly clean on washing as it left "bits") but never broke down.

Any help appreciated.

  • I strongly recommned Miele dishwashers, they last a lifetime, they are quiet, they have a built-in computer that decides how long the cycle should be and how much water to use depending on the load etc. They come with a 5 yr guarantee and with a large tray for cutlery which I find very handy. They cost more but they are worth it IMO.

My two dishwashers have been Hotpoint. First one lasted 15 years, was excellent so bought another Hotpoint but disappointed with quality of wash. Have found that the Tesco powder dishwash powder that previously worked well doesn't do a good job any more, not sure if it is the machine or the powder. Look very carefully at the layout of the trays inside to ensure that they will suit your crockery. Deep dishes don't always fit well in the holders. Would do more research next time before buying.

Stay away from Smeg ... Luckily I am good at DIY. Very poor quality of PCB connectors.

Stay well away from Baumatic, hand many problems with my dish washer and takes ages to get someone out to fix a problem.

I agree with gkf about the way it stacks. I had a indesit for 19 years and it was great. I only got rid of it when we had new matching kitchen. The Bosch is hopeless for stacking our Denby. I can only use alternate spaces so it only holds half the crocks in a load.

Next time I will take a pile of dishes to the shop.

Our Bosch dishwasher is eighteen years old and still going strong. It hasn't even broken down once. We live in a v. hard water area and it's always on at least once a day.

I do wonder though whether stuff now has a built-in working life. I bought my last Bosch washing machine and tumbledrier at the same time, only for them both to breakdown and need replacing within three weeks of each other. They only lasted seven years...

If it's freestanding would stick with your original idea? The generality (ours is CDA - and the wife thinks its brilliant, by the way) are hardly attractive things to look at - would definitely build one of those in !
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
