Utility companies are finding ways of keeping us with them by giving longer contracts for deals, however by tying us in they still get to change their terms and conditions without us being able to leave. Example British Gas web saver 10 allows 6% off their standard rate, but you are tied in even when their standard rate rises. Why should we have to stay tied in when they have changed the contract rules. Change of terms/conditions= release/ review.. of contract:xmassmile

Make students or their landlords pay council tax.
Also people selling their empty homes should not have to pay any council tax.
  • Premium rate 0845 etc phone lines are also not included in many 'all-in' phone tariffs, and seem to be proliferating daily. Many government depts., Pension service, Revenue and customs 0, NHS etc. are now using them. Whatever happened to 03 numbers?

Premium rate helplines are inaccessible to people who do not have access to a landline. The majority of people opt for mobile phone usage, profit should not be made from public needing to contact essential services. A land line should always be given as an option.
  • Is is wise to give additional benefits to people who are alcoholics. I understand they may be unfit for work but don't think you should give them additional money to spend on more drink. Surely this is also open to abuse and anyone could say they are alcoholic

Parents of children with ADHD get additional benefits (I'm sure they are entitled to mobility). It's not a life threatening illness and does not impair on mobility so why give it? Surely this would save millions per year as the number with ADHD rises each year.
  • Withdraw from the EU and then stop paying ridiculous amounts of money to european nationals who work here, especially for children who have never set foot in this country. Make people live here for a set number of years (5 or 10) before they qualify for any type of British Benefits
  • Stop paying additional benefits to anybody who continues to have children while not working. Set a limit of payments (including child benefit) for one or two children born while on benefits. No additional payments for any others.

Gift vouchers should not have an expiry date, or it should be much longer/renewable. Someone has paid for the gift/service and a voucher is a note of currency. How can it be justifiable to refuse to supply the gift/experience/service after an arbitrary period, when it has been paid for? It's a complete scam!

Well said. I've lost numerous vouchers - kids put them away or not used the full amount. Bank notes don't have an expiry date, why should vouchers.
  • I heartily second this - working parents have to make a sound financial choice to have more children as they know that their money will go down, in lost wages, nursery care etc etc. Unemployed parents know that their money will go up. Unacceptable!

Fully agree (previously commented on I know). I work full-time and couldn't afford to have any more than the two children I've got.

My biggest monthly expense is Council Tax - which although retired and on a fixed income I have to pay in full because I was stupid enough to work all my life. In return for which I seem to get little but excuses for inaction, incompetence and shockingly poor services. Changes are badly needed:-
    1) It's about time no householder was obliged to pay for services they don't use and never asked for - or for services shown clearly to be inadequate..
    2) Heads of major local authority departments should have to stand for election, as they do in the USA.
    3) Membership of organisations like Freemasonry should be banned or at least a matter of public record.

Totally agree. My dad paid into a private pension for 40 years (not public sector but private) and so can't get pension credits etc. Why should you be penalised for saving all your life and planning. He's paid for this private pension out of his wage every week for 40 years. he should be entitled to the same state (including credits) pension as everyone else. What's the point in saving or planning. Make pensions the same for everyone, it would also save a fortune in administration costs
