In these days of recession and gloom and doom, the government should raise more revenue by applying VAT to non essential products, like alcohol. Whether purchased in a shop or pub, VAT should be charged. After all, we don't NEED alcohol in order to live - it is a non essential!
Alcohol is already VAT rated, many things we dont need to exist already are taxed. No party indicated a rise in the election, yet anyone more intelligent than an ant new this was going to happen. Given the reason for increase I look forward to a reduction, when deficit dealt with,an ant has told me this will happen!
  • Everybody should be allowed a basic bank account and should be informed of them - especially if they are turned down for a normal account.

  • Water rates should be linked to council tax bands rather than the rateable value which nobody understands (I believe it is based on the rental value of your flat/house on a certain date) - o.k it would still have some flaws as the current council tax system does but it would be much clearer.

  • Banks should provide approved leaflets detailing free and impartial advice available for those in debt trouble - this should be provided for those the bank has reason to suspect are having problems and those that miss a credit card/loan payment.

  • Banks/Building Societies should stop all interest and charges for a minimum of 6 months if the customer has gone through a recognised debt charity and should not then be allowed to retrosepctively add the charges incurred in the first 6 months.

As a head of state would you like a Bush or a Clinton, neither of course for free.

If you want the Queen and all her hangers-on, you pay for them, I don't.

My dream is for a world where there isn't an artificial separation between customer/client and provider between constituent/government between patient/doctor. Words have power. By calling me a customer or a patient or by me calling myself an employer some humanity is lost. I would like us all just be called humans.

In order to maximise a personal pension we currently have to 'consult an IFA', the most recent of whom wanted £2000 up front plus £250 per hour for follow-up, and if we change to a better deal we have to pay a percentage of the fund in charges. There should be simple self-service pensions available and more complicated cases that need personal advice should be available at a reasonable cost, or a percentage of the value added.

Surely these should be done ONCE at a national level and be valid throughout the country. As a school bus driver I need one for each County Council at present and need TWICE OR MORE times the identity requirement of a UK Passport!!! Let the Passport Office take it on, or another central government department. Would save a fortune surely and be as effective??
