We already rent games rather than buy. Friends have xbox. Which xbox is best he is thinking of the most expensive because of the hard drive.

There's only really the Elite (the black one) and the Arcade (the basic one) available now, and out of the two I'd chose the Elite because it has the largest hard drive available for the Xbox 360 which gives you the option to install games directly to it in order to reduce the noise and wear on the DVD drive by not having the disc spinning.

    Things to consider:

    1) You only get a 1-month complimentary pass to XBL with the console, so to continue playing online afterwards you will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription. You can pick these up in the high street for £35, or you can get them online from between £27-£35.

2). The Xbox 360 does not have wireless capability built into it. If you wish to connect wirelessly, I wouldn't recommend it if you can avoid it at all, then you'll need the Wireless adaptor, which is about £40 brand new, or look for a second hand one.

HMV are doing a good bundle at the moment, £199 with Halo ODST and Fifa 10.

I have just been through the same questions - although it was for myself!!! (being a big kid!!!).

I went for the Xbox 360, it was far cheaper, equally as good games and graphics but a bigger online games presence (although you do have to pay for it).

You dont have to connect it up wirelessly there is an ethernet port on the back so if it is close enough to your router you can connect it via a cable instead!

Looks like you just missed out on a good deal at Amazon though, I got mine last week for £189 (Elite xbox 360) with 2 games (Need for speed Shift and Heroes over Europe) - seems like everywhere is putting up their prices pre Xmas i'm afraid!

Don't ask us, ask your son. As above, it'll depend on what his mates have, and what games he wants to play. Some games are only availabe on one console or the other. Forza games on XBox, Gran Turismo on PS for example. If it doesn't matter, just buy the Xbox which will cost you less. Don't buy the Arcade version, which has no hard drive, buy the Elite version. It's very easy to tell now in the shops as the Arcade is white and the Elite is black, as long as they're not old stock!

    Blue Ray player - PS3

Apart from the price I cant think of a single reason to get a 360 over a PS3

The Xbox 360 has a wider selection of games, more exclusive titles, multi-platform games are often written for the Xbox 360 and then ported to the PS3, its games often have better graphics, it has much better online services, better integration with Windows PCs (for streaming media and the like), and online multiplayer is much better.

    i own both
    prefer the 360 controller,games,360 online service,(though at a cost)
im all wired so wifi is irrelevant
    i prefer the PS3 menu system,media playback,blutooth media remote,its quieter
i run HD dvd and blurays so get the cheap HD dvds plus run bluray (my vaio has bluray so i already had it anyway)
iplayer means nothing as i get it on my cable package

i stream media to both consoles using PS3 media server.on this even though its designed for the PS3 it works very well on the 360 with some sound codecs working better on the 360

browsing on the consoles doesnt appeal to me even on a 1080p screen

    I've been Money Tipped!
have recently mystery shopped 3 well known games stores and had to ask this very question!

All 3 sales people immediately said Xbox, far better games, online subscription very worth it and PS3 had been purchased by all 3 of them and sold on by all 3 of them as they returned to their XBox. all hard core gamers IMO, less interested in i player and blu ray i guess.

Personally, I'm enjoying a Spectrum simulator I recently found online-that tells you where I'm at with consoles!

I agree with that all. In the not too distant future Sky broadcasting will be coming to the Xbox 360 also.
