Hi Gill - yes I think having some agreed spends for nice stuff - even if its "pocket money" is important. Me and OH allowed ourselves £10 free spend a week on whatever and then I allow some money each month for family treat or date night too... We're a bit more cushioned now because we've paid stuff off but even so...

We set up savings pots for holiday, car, gifts etc and it really took pressure off this year already

I really must start throwing more money at credit card, but feel like I'm having more effect by putting it off mortgage. Annual statement should be due soon, so will update sig with total.

Gilli, I am sorry to be getitng technical here but I have been thinking a lot and doing quite a bit of research about this stuff. If one ingnores the interest it doesn't actually matter whether you pay the mortgage or the cards - in both cases you are increasing your net worth. One should not ignore the interest, however - usually the mortgage has lower interest than cards (excluding 0% cards, of course).

What I am saying is that paying the mortgage is emotionally satisfying, but paying the cards makes more sense.

Yep! About 8% of our income goes in a 'I am so worth it fund' - condition is this one has to be spent every month. Make one feel better.

Hi FW, in my case because I was once in serious debt trouble, the interest on the old cards was frozen, and my one decent card is at 0% (LOB) and I don't spend on it. You are right though, its emotionaly satisfying to see the mortgage disappear.

Over Easter I've got some time spare and will need to do the business accounts, so will set myself a budget for 3 months, I think it will be better if I actually allocate some money for myself. At the moment, there is slack in the budget that allows for it, but then I won't feel guilty about it.

I'm watching the practice for Chinese GP, so a good start to a morning.

El!!! If only :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: well, I suppose I'm fairly tall, and technically I'm still a size 12, but the Casey was in Jill's office :p

I don't have a treats budget as such, but I do have a tiny annual allocation for clothes (which I've already spent, oops) and monthly I have a £200 allowance - all food comes out of that, and all fiddly bits - transport (unless I'm in a hurry to get on a train, and have to use a card-only machine), birthday cards, stationery, the odd evening out, a bottle of wine for the games evening, any bits for the house - like the lightpull switch I just bought - and tickets, like the £12 tickets I nabbed on here to see the Royal Ballet in June at the O2. Sorry, that was probably overkill ...:o

That makes sense about the interest rate on cards and mortgage ... thats an interesting idea, too, about doing a budget that you know will last for 3 months.

Hi my point is that - up until this year I have felt guilty for every penny I've spent... Now I have an agreed budget for clothes etc - I can have some guilt free spend - and some - oi what are you playing at spend LOL

    Where did today go?

On the phone to Orange, that's where. At lunchtime, tried to make a call and phone display was SOS - emergency calls only, couldn't even ring Orange. Tried all sorts but no joy; went to go to contacts and phone seized up completely. Two hours later, eventually got a signal, got an update txt from Orange, and then it broke again. It kept picking up a vodaphone signal, no matter what I did. Its working again at the moment, but had to hard reset it to get to that point, so I've lost everything that was on it, all my contacts, etc.

I think I know what the issue with the guilt free spending is, I can't just buy one thing, so have to deny myself completely. For example, craft stuff -I need some blue ribbon for a baby card, and will go to the haberdashers in the market, but will end up with all sorts of buttons etc. I bought underwear a few weeks ago and it seemed to fit, now the bra is uncomfortable, but I daren't even start looking.
Have just made a lovely snack as not sure what to eat, so made bruscetta, with some of the sun dried tomatoes and some fresh basil and some fresh tomatoes too.

House to myself tonight, so am going to do.....nothing at all.

    El

I can confirm that KC can be described as tall, slim and is probably brunette, so the only thing different is the '20 something'; don't know about her, but I'm not sure I'd want to be 20 again.
