    I recently bought a couple of 100% cotton bread bags from Tchibo which I have to admit are the best thing I've tried so far for keeping my HM bread in - the crust stays crusty and the bread stays fresh - have to say they would be easy to make from any 100% cotton fabric - mine don't have any sort of lining - plastic or otherwise.

    I wrap mine in a clean teatowel and keep in the fridge, it lasts me 4-5 days this way.

    I've tried the breadbags from Lakeland, which sound like the same sort of thing.

    At first, they were brilliant. Then the bread started to go mouldy very quickly. We didn't wash the bags between loaves, and I think some stale breadcrumbs from the old loaves were going mouldy, and this was then transferring to the new bread.

    I tried washing the bags, but they just took forever for the lining to dry properly.

    I now just wrap my bread in a (clean) teatowel. I use a clean teatowel for each loaf, and put the teatowel in the wash as soon as we've finished the bread.

    I tend to batch bake bread, and lob them all (bar one) in to the freezer.... taking out as/when.

    One loaf never seems to last more than a day, so freshness isn't an issue, LOL ... I do like the idea of wrapping it in cotton, especially in the Summer when we have zillions of flies etc., .... which also answers my dilemma of what to do with my old tea towels :beer:

    If you do find that a loaf lasts more than a day or two then you can freeze half loaves or even slice the loaf before freezing. A slice will toast from frozen if necessary, and it's quite easy to access as many slices as you want by splitting them off with a palette knife or similar.

    Thanks for all the suggestions - you've reminded me I have some extra new tea towels (were a freebie) put away so I could stitch a couple of them together. :)

    Hiya everyone!! :hello:

    Well I've finally done it and made my own bread (rolls actually) and I've just had a chicken and philadelphia roll which was still warm and it was delicious!! :D

    I only baked 8 but I don't think we'll get through them tonight - so, has anyone got any tips on how to keep them fresh...?

    Yep.

    Wrap them in cling film and keep them in the fridge.

    It's what I always do with mine.

    Not that they ever last very long :)

  • Hi All,

    Thanks to all your fantastic inspiration on the OS thread, I retrieved my breadmaker from the back of the cupboard a couple of weeks ago and since then I have managed to stop buying bread totally :j

    Can I just ask though, how does everyone store their homemade bread? At the moment I wrap it in foil but it seems quite a waste of foil as you can only use it a couple of times before bits start tearing off it and it doesn't seem very MS or OS to use loads of foil. Any advice grateful received.
  • I use a cotton bread bag - I find it keeps very well. HTH
