Because of the lovely weather we are all having at the moment, I thought the thread could do with a bumpety-bump
And yes..an ulterior motive. What do do guys recommend for protection against lungworm? We've been invaded by pesky slugs & snails--as you can imagine--& Pup is a curious character when it comes to all creatures creeping & crawling
TIA

Advocate is the only licenced product to also guard against lungworm“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
We have just started using Effipro for our dog but just wanted to find out it should take to kill the fleas?
we put it on late Thursday afternoon and we still think she has them as she is biting herself still or could that be the Effipro?
i have had a look at her but can not see any but she is hard as is has got dark fur so seeing the fleas is hard.
also can we still bath her with the stuff on?
we got some Bob martin flea shampoo also so is that still ok to use as well?0 -
Well I have just read the whole of this thread and I am thoroughly confused. We are about to get our first dog and the Rescue Centre recommend frontline. Some people seem to swear by it and others say it doesnt work!
Going to have a look at that Barrier Biotech too.
Do you use anything special for washing the dogs bedding (or the dog for that matter!)? Is there anything else you can do to help prevent feas?0 -
I started using Effipro about 18 months ago, and it works for my crowd. The old pipettes were truly awful - you HAD to use scissors to open them, and they just sloshed fluid out.
The new pipette design is excellent - I think even better than Frontline pipettes.
Because I have many animals, I buy the XL dog size, which is 4ml per pipette, rather than 0.5ml for cats, empty it into a 10ml glass bottle with a screw cap, and then use a 1ml needleless syringe to draw out 0.5ml to dose my cats. I save an absolute fortune this way.0 -

Have they finally changed the design? That's very good news indeed as the old ones were awful and on that basis I refused to recommend them.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

The fleas don't live on the dog, they live in the environment so you also need to treat the house otherwise you're fighting a losing battle. Either Indorex or Acclaim will be absolutely fine to use around the house. Bin the Bob Martins, it's absolutely useless and would be harmful to your dog to use within 4 weeks of treating with Frontline anyway.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Yes, the new design is excellent. To ensure that you are getting the new one, they are clear plastic on silver backing, whereas the old ones were dark blue on silver backing.
I was ok using the old ones, as I emptied the whole thing into my little dark glass holding bottle anyhow, but I do enjoy using good design, and the new one allows you stop/start control over the "squirting out" as well as (oh joy of joys to a no-waste OCD person like me), the ability to REALLY empty out the entire pipette with no remaining "little drops" left behind. I use Effipro on my cats because one of them Spooks has a nasty allergy and can't affird fleas ..it works very well and also murders tics.
These drugs are absorbed into the bloodsteam through the skin, so it's vital that you get the maximum amount actually on the skin or you are only giving a fraction of the dose, and you need to keep it at the right level by frequent applications to keep it working at the right level.
I have two cats, one is twice the size of the other and has the allergy...I treat him every 3 weeks because he seems to need a bigger dose.
If you don't take the amount applied and the size of the animal into account you can't compare different ones.
As for the question about bathing ...when it's all absorbed it doesn't matter if you bathe them or not as it's all gone and is working. It does nothing in fur, it only works when unwanted passengers drink the blood with it in.
There is another very good one called Stronghold which covers a wider range of pests but is prescription only. I used that a few times and it was better than any other I have tried....bit hard to get a prescription and then go buy it at a decent price elsewhere though.
End of the day, don't worry about Effipro. It's good stuff. Just make sure you get it all on the skin where it can get to work properly. Actually, they're not. They're absorbed into the subcutaneous fatty layer beneath the skin which is why it's very important not to apply more than one product within 4 weeks of previous application or use a flea collar simultaneously, otherwise you risk overdosing the poor animal.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
