hi - effipro isn't a 'generic' version of frontline - its a similar but rival product made by another drugs company (virbac) that happens to be cheaper than frontline

If Effipro has the same active ingredient in the same concentrations as Frontline I would class it as a generic and I am a qualified pharmacy technician. A drug is generic if it isn't covered by a patent, not if it doesn't have brand name. Branding generics makes the public trust a product, look at Tesco and their many 'discounter' brands.

Maybe I got a bit mixed up using the "generic" term!?!

But the active ingredients is exactly the same for example Effipro in the small dog one that I buy has 67mg fipronil which is the same as frontline.

They do work out quite a bit cheaper for me for example at vetuk's prices:

    3 x small dog frontline £14.96 = £4.98 per 2 month treatment.
    4 x small dog Effipro £13.72 = £3.43 per 2 month treatment.

    3 x Cat Frontline £11.63 = £3.87 per 1 month treatment
    4 x Cat Effipro £10.15 = £2.53 per 1 month treatment.

Over a year that's quite a bit of a saving! (can't be bothered to calculate how much though at the moment as the sun is shining!!) :o :rotfl:

Effipro is a brand name, the same as Frontline is. If it was a generic product it would simply be called Fipronil.

I used Effipro for the first time on our new kitten about 3 weeks ago and he's infested with flees - and when I say infested I mean infested - we must have pulled over 50 of him today alone (I just pulled another 2 of him while writing this post!)!

My mum swears by Frontline - she's had quite a few cats over the years and always used this and has never seen a live flee on any of them.

I've put some Frontline on him today so hopefully that will sort him out!

In my experience Effipro doesn't work and I'm annoyed that my vet recommended it!

My advice would be to stick with Advocat for cats, it costs more but it works better than Frontline.

Neither Frontline or Effipro are meant to prevent fleas they are supposed to kill them over 24 hours?

Did it not work like that? Also you need to treat cats every 4 weeks too.

Horrible little things live fleas - practically indestructible too!! Hope you manage to get Kitty sorted.

Effipro and Frontline are the same thing... exactly the same, same chemical, same dosage... it's like saying ibuprofen didnt work for your headache so you are going back to Nurofen (a branded version of ibuprofen).

Because my local chemist said Effipro has the same chemical as frontline but was cheaper I bought some, what a big mistake, after a week of the first treatment my dog was scratching and showing obvious signs of fleas, effipro also left a horrible white mark on my dogs coat.

I was so annoyed I phoned Virbac who distribute Effipro I spoke to a lady from Virbac she told me white marks are normal when I asked her why my dog still had fleas she just hung up, I phoned back & was passed around from pillar to post for about 20 minutes until they hung up on me again, terrible customer service, my dogs health & the meds it takes are very important I expect more.

I still have 3 pippetes of effipro left that I will never use & I will never be buying it again.

Best stick to frontline it kills fleas & doesn't leave marks on your dogs coat.
  • I've been using Effipro on my cat and he hasn't had a single flea on him since. I did find 1 or 2 when I was using Frontline.

Yes, Effipro does leave white marks if I get it on his fur but I'd rather that than fleas!

Last time I called at the vet's to buy Frontline, they gave me the Effipro instead. Quite a saving.
Have not noticed any white stains, nor any fleas or ticks since changing over. So long as the stuff is applied on schedule the protection seems the same.

Orangatan - it won't stop the fleas jumping onto your kitten, but a drink of the protected pet's blood will kill them. You had better treat your home, the pet's bedding etc - sorry but it sounds like you've got an infestation! (A friend of mine had problems with her dog picking up ticks despite using every treatment and collar she could find. When she had a new bathroom put in, they found millions of the wretched things hiding behind the bath panels. The dog had been sleeping in the bathroom..).
