a few weeks back, one of the directors modem died so he used his mobile, he downloaded about 2 gigabytes and for that Orange are charging us six thousand pounds...

    Was it good !!!!!!? ;)

As he's a Director, it can come out of his dividends. That way he will feel like he's just paying proper income tax like the rest of us....

My thoughts would be that if they have already offered to go down to £4k, then there is further scope.

Have you had a word with Ofcom about it so far? 020 7981 3040

If you don't get a satisfactory response from Orange, you can also always try here:

    http://www.cisas.org.uk/?p=4&lang=e

Although i don't know how far you'll get as any refund will be offered as a gesture of goodwill.

I think your main argument should be that Orange should never had let such a bill to be run up - they should have stopped the account. I doubt they'll agree with you though ;)

  • In this case, liability is joint because the expenditure was in the usual course of business!

    Tough luck!

Nowhere near the same ,however ,i made this mistake personally once ,after moving home & whilst waiting on a new internet connection ,i used my mobile to connect ,literally to check email & bank account & my next bill was double .

I called to complain & got the bill for this useage halved .

In the meantime lesson learnt !

    Good luck .
Gotta love a good bargain !
  • Surely Orange would of noticed it going up so high? why did they not get in touch and advise, this isn't a couple of hundred quid is it, it's ludicrous that they're charging this much for what it was used for. I would email the CEO as advised earlier. I did this with Sky once and it seemed to work.

    Good luck!

Something like 14 million acc's active on the Orange network and a few hundred staff. How is any network suppoed to do that ?

None of the networks have ever offered to police your acc for you. People need to take responsibility for their own actions.

I'm sorry, but when a bill goes up this high there should be some kind of procedure in place to deter it.. i mean 6grand it's outrageous!!

Orange charge £5 per month for 500mb internet/mobile broadband.

This would equate to ~£20/25 if you used 2GB.

Point this out to Orange - be very polite, and beg. they might be OK with.

And fire the stupid director. Any person who cannot think properly, before doing something aint gonna be any good - no matter how good a designer he may be. Did he not think about how much this may cost him in the at least 5 or 6 hours (probably much more) that it took for him to download it?

    Idiot.

I would mention the fact that unlike most other phone operators orange have no way to set a credit limit.

This coupled with the bait and switch tactics on data pricing (the data bundles would be under £50) should warrant a complaint to ofcom or the threat of it at least. Tell me another contract you enter where if your phone gets knicked or you download a virus that does weird things to your phone you could end up losing your house.
