Should I scrap my 11 year old Nissan for a new Hyundai i10?

I can relate to you a scenario that occurred in the opposite direction. The VAT is applicable on the day that you pay for the vehicle I believe, so if that date is in 2010, then I am fairly sure that the increased VAT would apply.
Somebody feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Mother orders new car, VAT reduction announced, dealer and Mother agree on delaying delivery date by 2 days in order to qualify for lower VAT rate.
When it comes to VAT accounting the important date is the invoice date (tax point) which is going to be the day you pay the balance and take delivery. If that turns out to be 1st January 2010 or after, well, tough luck
Just found a reference that spells it out on page 7 here:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/forms-rates/rates/rate-rise-guidance.pdf
One possibility to consider is the "takings you receive" quote. The lower VAT rate will apply to the deposit you pay on the vehicle before 1st January. You can make a decision here about how much of the car value you want to pay as a deposit benefiting from the lower VAT rate.0 -

Would you pay £2000 for a rusty 10 year old Nissan Almera?0 -
I know someone with a P reg almera. 30K (!) on the clock and garaged EVERY night since it was bought. Had the sills welded last MOT and will need them doing again this time around. I had a MK2 Escort that was just as bad, except that was 20 years ago........
Thats enough reason for me not to buy one of these wonderful nissans that are preached about on here0 -
[FONT="]A family member purchased an i10 comfort ordered in 1987 and arrived last week- finally! About 4 months wait. According to what car it will retain 46% of its value after 3 years- which is very good for a small car. Better the Americans for sure.
The comfort offers a lot more equipment for only £700 extra (it was only a £500 difference at the time of my family’s order which was a giveaway) such as front fogs, alloys, remote locking, alarm, seat adjustment, 4x electric windows, electric mirrors, full colour coding of handles and mirrors, a nicely more mature interior trim plus a few other bits and pieces. Btw the 1.25 engine is a corker, very refined and fast.
If you can get one go for it. I worked out if my family member keep the i10 for 3 years it would only be £700/ year more expensive than had he kept his is 12-year-old Honda. If he keeps if for 5 years it only £400/ year more. Plus this car is far superior all round, warranty, low costs etc. only downsize is the rear is 2 adults unless their names are Victoria beckham and a smallish boot (but bigger than all its rivals), 4 can travel in it all day long.
Here is a download fro the Hyundai scrappage scheme website so you can compare the specs of the i10 (page 3)

Precisely - Almera actually worth very little, certainly nothing like the £2000 I could get for it on the scrappage scheme
I was referring to the 'Almera was free, therefore depreciation has been zero up to now' comment, but if we have the opportunity to get £2000 for it now and don't take it, isn't that almost a bit similar to a £2000 depreciation? (my odd sort of logic

I did it. My micra was not in such a bad state as your Almera so it was an even harder decision, but in 2 years time you'll be kicking yourself, unless you are happy to buy and drive another old car or hope for someone to give you another one for nothing.
When you take delivery of your lovely i10 you'll realise in hindsight the decision was a no brainer.
The Aygo is another great little car, and if you're worried about daughter learning to drive you might want to consider that instead, if you can get delivery on it in time. Not as zoomy as the i10, better for fuel consumption and it has an even better Encap rating. Downside is the boot is just a joke.
Whatever car you go for, do it and preferably before VAT goes up again.
JUST DO IT!

Agree with CFC - and have a look at Carfile (online brokers) if you are planning a different car from the Hyundai. The Yaris he offered me was cheaper, if I recall, than the Aygo he offered.

:rotfl: somwhere along the thread I managed to completely forget you were getting £2000 scrappage allowance for it
I suppose in a way it could be measured as £2000 missed out on.
My thought is if you don't see the Almera lasting at least 2 more years bin it now for the £2000 scrappage allowance... preferably on a car that has not had a price hike to negate the alowance as some people are finding has happended with some cars. I think the i10 is on in this respect.0 -
So, I've taken my daughter to see the i10. She likes it, she reckons seats aren't as comfortable as the Amera in the back, but comfortable enough and enough leg room. :j
Keep talking myself round and round in circles and keep coming back to the conclusion that if we wait another few years, will end up spending more on a 'nearly new' car, than we can get this new one for now, with the scrappage discount.:doh:And if we had any major problem with the Almera, we'd be kicking ourselves.
So, planning to take an i10 for a test drive tomorrow afternoon...if all goes well, hopefully we could have a decision by this time tomorrow - and maybe I can get a good nights sleep!
Just have to think about the colour now.....
Thank you to everyone for your input... given me lots to consider, I feel like we've considered everything that can feasibly be taken into consideration. :T2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07
