Has anyone had any success with the underwriter route? Welcome don't seem to want to answer their phones at the moment so I can find out exactly who underwrites their loans. Is the company who administers the insurance different to the one who underwrites?

As anyone who reads these forums regularly will know, I hate Welcome and the fact they are so difficult to contact over the phone. Honestly, i have been ringing for over 10 mins before until someone answers, they really are terrible.

But - apart from this - i personally have found them ok to deal with ONCE you get through to them. I know it's frustrating and we all have far better things to be doing, but if you do hold on and put a few minutes aside, they will answer eventually.....

    Good luck

    Hi Guys,
Not posted for a while but this is how the FOS are handling my complaint about Welcome due to them not being regulated on 04/02/03. They are complaining to Aviva the underwriter who have tried to say nothing to do with them. The Broker was Direct Group.
However FOS have rewritten to them as they want answers so hopefully I will get some answers soon. It is all new to them so they cant give any idea of success. I am just hanging on hoping justice will be done!!! Ive promised to update you all and will as letters come in. See my previous posts under not covered by FOS thread. All quiet at the moment.......
  • Shamrock - how did you find out the underwriter was Aviva? Am wondering as mine seems a similar age if it could be rather than Direct. FOS didn't seem to think it was Direct. I do wonder if the bods on the phones at Welcome know what they are talking about. Best of luck with your claim!

I got told that too from FOS. It will go quiet for a while now. Its a strange thing to say but that is how they worded it. My complaint is agains the insurer being Lloyds and its a rebate complaint but they did say that they are in talks with underwriters at the moment. Just have to wait and see perhaps.

The man I spoke to at the FOS (a manager in the specialist department who is sick of me ringing him now!!!) said that they had loads of complaints that were trying to make underwriters responsible for where at the time of the loan the broker/lender was not regulated. My rebate complaint is actually stuck amongst them. I actually sent into FOS last year a long list of reasons why insurers and underwriters should be made responsible for complaints just like lenders brokers. I am just glad that I have been heard or at least have a chance of getting it looked at.

    Good luck with yours

I Finally got sense on my second phonecall to Welcome and it was confirmed for me. Direct are the Broker. Most of the people you get on the phone dont even know what underwriters and brokers are. I wasn't that sure myself! Which is why I was missold! Thanks so much and Im not holding my breath!
  • Shamrock - which phone number do you dial to get any sense out of Welcome please?

    Hi Robbie.;)

Have you the policy details of your loan still?

With mine, I had to request this separately, this is where I found my details of the insurers and in whom to complain to, in relation of insurance complaints.

If you do not hold these, the lender should supply them to you.

At first I thought this was just the standard document that came along with the agreement, and with this loan taken out in 2004, I only received these documents of Payment Protection Policy this year.

It may be the same case for you as well.

  • The loan in question is from 2000 and Welcome cannot send me any documentation on it. I know it's a bit of a long shot anyway. I might try ringing them again
