Afternoon, all.
Been awol for a few days, sorry, mostly due to my disorganised domestically challenged Hubby who, though the family weekend schedule is clearly put up weeks in advance on the wall planner, doesn't (a) bother to look at it or (b) tell me of any changes that need to be worked in. Thus my entire Friday and Saturday vanished into a black hole of last minute childcare and Sunday would have gone too, if it hadn't been that I was committed to the event organisers of our local Apple Day. Still....I ended up cooking the Sunday dinner at 8am, so I wouldn't have to start cooking it at 6pm. Bah. The Absent Minded Professor type is fine in books, let me tell you, but never marry one!
Anyway, tis Monday and my life is my own again.I have been to the allotment and come back with sackfuls of onions (now drying out in greenhouse), potatoes, a cauliflower, lots of beetroot, carrots, salad stuff, borlotti beans and the last of the sweetcorn and raspberries. Plus I have a crate of mixed heritage apples which were given to me in "payment" for doing the spinning demo at Apple Day yesterday. So I need to go and write a menu plan for the rest of the week, to use this lot up. I think it might be cauliflower cheese tonight though, to go with the remains of yesterdays roast chicken. Plus apple cake since I'll have the oven on for the cauliflower, and also get some bread made.
Plus laundry (always laundry on Monday), hoover the hall, strip the kids' beds, phone the council about something and get the kids' bags packed for swimming club tonight. enough for one day, especially after two hours of digging spuds!Val.0 -
Oh, Ann, what a horrible thing to happen. I'm almost crying for you here as I can imagine just how upsetting it must have been. The rotten, rotten cow!
Anyway off I hobbled feeling really good and that I may have helped someone- anyway about ten minutes later in the fruit and veg section shes having a very loud conversation with a friend (about me and the site)and thinks its all "a load of s***" . I was really upset and felt humiliated. The page I had written on was on the floor(complete with my name and email on it)
Hope your run of bad luck changes soon;)
I've just put a large batch of flapjacks in the oven-half for the school tuckshop and half for kids and OH (oh, alright me as well:p).
My washing is still damp after 5 hours on the line. Still and grey, so I don't think it's going to get much drier. I haven't had to dry indoors for months.0 -
I have just got a washing line again after 2 1/2 years without. I have my washing out. Lovely! Hope it brightens up for you soon thriftlady."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Also look up Rosa Parks - she was the lady on the bus....
The Supremes exhibition was very good for illustrating what life was like in Detroit & surrounding towns/cities in the "ghetto" areas and also showed the reaction to MLK's death and his funeral. They also had copies of the LP that was released of the speech.
Yes, Rosa Parks was mentioned in the book we read. She was arrested and fined $10 for not giving up her seat
It's really interesting the other avenues you can take with just one subject.
I can imagine how good the exhibition was floss. My DDs learn more by taking part in activities and actually getting to look at things than working purely from a book

What sort of hats are you looking at? I've got a couple that are just sitting in the drawer.....
Hi Floss,
I'm after anything at the moment. I've never worn a hat other than a wedding type so I have no idea what'll suit and what won't but I've just won a baker boy hat and I've my eye on some woolly berets and beanie types.
If you have any you;d be interested in selling please pm me :T0 -
Afternoon all
Firstly ((((Hugs)))) to all who need them and it sounds like there are quite a few at the moment. I too have gone through the horrors of teenagers but both DD's have emerged the other side now and are really good company now, so it does eventually pass - although it doesn't feel like it at the time:eek:
Been to the hospital this morning and have been given a trial of a sleep mask - it is dreadful and quite uncomfortable so we shall see how I go on. I have to try it for 2 weeks before going back. Still haven't heard any more as to when my op will be, I suppose it will depend on these sleep trials as they say it will affect the anaesthetic given to me?!?!?!
Slimming club tonight so fingers crossed that I have lost as I have been very good!
Bargainbird and Tiredmum thinking of you!
Anniestar sounds like the day can only get better! (fingers crossed)
Sunflower I am sure we must all have hats hanging around if you let us know what you are looking for!?
Right back to work now as lunchtime over.
Have a good afternoon/evening all

This really upset me and made me feel stupid and worthless.
How very ungrateful.

Venison all cooked, bacon, leeks, onions and carrots, Floyd stylee spash of red wine and stock, waiting for oh to arrive back before I turn it into a pie so that he can check the seasoning for me - being veggie can be awkward when you cook by taste and the dish involves meat! Will bung in a deep pie dish and just top with puff pastry. Just discovered that we are out of potatoes, usually have a huge sack, kids did mention that they'd used a lot over the weekend with their dad, but blimey, they must've eaten potatoes for every meal!!!! Can't believe I'm out of potatoes and bread flour, considering my stockpiles it's unbelievable! Luckily I have some leftover mash in the freezer, so that will do, might just dry fry it into little crispy potato cakes.
Also had a rummage in the fridge and decided to use up the half a butternut squash in a moroccan style stew, cooked with onions, chickpeas, toms and some mushrooms (yes I did rather overbuy them, but they were sooooo reduced that I got carried away!), used the tagine paste again and the smell of lemons in lovely - can thoroughly recommend it if you've not tried it before. Anyway, I shall be having some later and popping the rest in the freezer if I can keep it away from the kids, they all loved the last one and demolished 6.5 litres whilst I was at work!
OH has just phoned, and car needs a new arm? Apparently the roads around here have become so dreadful that the garage have been replacing loads lately, and I don't even live in the town, so many of the roads near me are a lot worse! Anyway the good news is that it'll only cost about £20 plus fitting, which I'm told is quick and easy, and the leak might be something unimportant to do with the oil - I know the car needs oil obviously, but this is a tiny bit, perhaps not actually unimportant, but small and cheap and easily sorted! Feeling quite relieved now, bless oh and his mechanic.
NPM - I love the hat, it looks really funky (in a good way, not in the way my teens use the word!).
To all those with teens and generally awkward children, take heart, I have been having some ups and downs with my ds recently, but last night we were all watching telly, including oh, and the kids were being their usual selves, odd bicker, teasing each other, mostly in a fun way, loud, dd1 was in and out doing an art project, and it was really nice! Not once did I have to tell anyone off or deal with ds winding up his sisters or being generally hard work (hard to explain exactly what he does, but I'm sure you all know what I mean!), and when they'd all been despatched off to their rooms, oh said to me that it's obvious how much they all really like each other and how much they all respect each other and me. It was a lovely thing to hear, as quite often ds can push the boundaries and dd3 can just be really demanding, especially when oh is around. It was nice that oh got to see them like that, and hopefully it means that they are all starting to accept each other a lot more.
Going to have a bit of the stew now rather than defrost some soup, and bung in some more washing, argh will it never end!
Beth - sorry to hear about your mum, but lovely to see you back here
Haribo - happy birthday to Mr H, hope you all have a lovely day
Thrifty - I'm going to make my chorizo into meatballs, but will put a bit aside to fry and try topping some pizzas too, gotta work out a lot cheaper than buying chorizo sausages, esp as the kids always eat any they find in the fridge! My books have been despatched and are winging their way to me now - I'm so excited!

And finally the worst this morning....... My most favourite cookbook in the entire world has been totally ruined I was soaking the metal bits fron the cooker in the sink and somehow my beloved treasured Dairy Book Of home Cookery found itsself there as well. Am gutted.
Ann xxx
Hiya, are you SURE that the book won't dry out? I'm a terrible nuisance for dropping reading books in the bath while I'm having a good soak and they are usually readable after a few hours on the radiator or in front of the fire.
If not, there are tons on eBay and depending on which edition / title you're after they range from £1 - £15ish.
Hope that helps a little and I'm sorry about your rubbish few days. Things can only get better though - eh? :rolleyes:0
