It makes me laugh because you have more chance of getting your card cloned from using an ATM or PIN sentry machine, neither of which I ever do anyway, than having my bank account hacked into online!!! Now who's the sensible one!

You have no chance of getting your card cloned just for using the PINsentry device to log in to online banking.

I don't really see what your point is here.

I meant the device (chip and pin) you use to make transactions in shops. I apologise if I called it the wrong name!

My point is that by using this card reader I am forced to use and remember the PIN when I wouldn't otherwise have had to! I can't see how I can put it any more clearly!

Barclays require you to use it just to log into your account online!!!!

Needless to say I've moved almost all my banking over to Lloyds now ;)

I bank with them and I didn't need PINsentry to login. I didn't receive the device, nor didn't upgrade to PINsentry through online banking.

By the way, did you upgrade yourself, or was it done automatically?

It seems the process was automatic. I hadn't had the account open very long and was in the process of transferring all my banking over to Barclays but then the card reader was introduced, which caused me more hassle than ever, so now I'm transferring it all back out again!

Seems I'm not alone in being unhappy either!

It's strange I haven't been transferred automatically like you.

The amount of security to get logged in is enough in my opinion (5 digit passcode, last name, membership number, and 1st-8th letters of your memorable word).

I check my online banking to see if anything is suspicious. If there is, I'll call up and see how they could solve it.

It seems that the card reader issue is about Barclays, and not other banks.

RBS is the same. I have tried to do online transactions when away from home and cant do this. Also I recently phoned them when i forgot the card reader, they told me they would transfer the money this time but wont do it again over the phone. What a joke!

If the card never leaves your house (the only circumstance I can think of where you wouldn't need the PIN otherwise) I'm failing to see a problem...

The problem is that I need to use a bloody card reader just to log in to the bloody account which then means I need to use the card and PIN to use the bloody card reader!!!

Why can't I just log in using the memorable data and password like every other bloody account I have!?!

Apologies for my language but I am getting increasingly frustrated at why people can't seem to grasp a simple problem!

Have you tried asking Barclays to downgrade from PINsentry to non-PINsentry? Not sure if this is possible though.

It's lucky that I haven't been automatically upgraded to PINsentry after opening my account.

Yes, the issue, or at least MY issue is predominantly with Barclays. I have a card reader for Nationwide too but have only ever used it once to set up a new payment authorisation. That account too will eventually become defunct as I've since lost the PIN so the next time it asks me to use the card reader I will be unable to.

I just hope Lloyds doesn't decide to introduce these blasted machines too or I'm stuffed!
