Card Readers. I hate them!

We now have card readers to use with our debit cards if we want to transfer money between one account to another in our current accounts, even for husband and wife with accounts at the same bank. I really do think this is a step too far in the name of security. I'd be interested to know if others have them and if they feel the same.

I'm with HSBC. We don't use them. :)

I've only got one for Nationwide, and apart from a bit of experimentation, I've never needed to use it.

I have one for my Barclays account and don't find it a problem, but then I only bank online at home so its no hassle. Don't have one for either Lloyds or Nationwide.

I'd rather be secure than risk fraud.

Had one for Nationwide and originally just needed it to set up a new payee.

Recently I had to use it to make a payment for the payee already set up.
This is what is so irritating, it is hard to imagine a situation where a fraud could be committed involving a payment to an account you has set up yourself using the card reader.

Co-op/Smile also requires it for each payment, it encourages me to pay by debit card where possible.

I agree with Lansdown. Ridiculous to have to use it when transferring via a pre-recorded payment instruction. Grrr.

Barclays require you to use it just to log into your account online!!!!

Needless to say I've moved almost all my banking over to Lloyds now ;)

That really is taking things too far, what happens if you need to make an urgent transfer, your battery in the card reader goes flat, you live in a village and you obviously don't keep a spare button type battery.

    You are well stuffed.

As they are compatable you can use one of the other ones you will inevitably acquire!

The batteries last roughly six years in a card reader.

Your scenario, although possible, is ridiculously unlikely. I prefer the scenario of what if you need to make an urgent transfer, but MacGyver has stolen your card reader to disarm a nuclear bomb?
